space and wildlife habitat• too close to the quarryLafarge are objecting to the plans,

concerned that the development may“sterilise mineral resources and con-strain nationally important mineral pro-duction and distribution facilities”.

Leicestershire County Council High-ways are recommending the applicationbe refused. They say the site is not in alocation readily accessible by publictransport, and that the application wouldbe considered favourably if Jelson pro-vided a bespoke bus service or contrib-uted to the diversion of an existingroute.

In their initial response to the plans,Mountsorrel Parish Council say that ifdevelopment occurs, “top priority isgiven to ensuring Mountsorrel’s commu-nity facilities are significantly enhanced.”

It considers essential priorities are:• a new community centre on the site

of the Memorial Hall• investment in new building at

Mountsorrel school• improved health care facilitiesJelson’s plans can be viewed on the

planning section of Charnwood BoroughCouncil’s website. The planning refer-ence is P/13/1008/2

THE SPEAKER at the Junemeeting of Mountsorrel WIwas Wendy Coley who repre-sented Medical DetectionDogs.

She was accompanied by her verywell behaved, and gorgeous, pet labra-dor. Medical Detection Dogs is a charitythat works in partnership with research-ers, NHS Trusts and Universities. Theiraim is to train specialist dogs to detectthe odour of human disease.

Dogs are renowned for their sense ofsmell. The Medical Alert Dogs aretrained to assist individuals who managecomplex medical conditions on a day today basis. Their dogs are taught to iden-tify the odour changes that are associat-ed with certain medical events. Forexample for someone living with diabe-tes, hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) orthe avoidance of it can be a daily prob-lem.

Symptoms can vary from confusion toseizures or comas and be life threaten-ing. Once trained, the Medical AlertDogs recognise blood sugar levels out-side the normal range and warn theirowners or get help, before the symptomsare felt. They will bring their owner anynecessary medical supplies such as glu-cose and blood testing kits. They canalso be trained to push alarm buttons. How clever is that! Wendy was extremelyentertaining and raised awareness of thischarity and also explained how peoplecould help in various ways from donat-ing money to puppy walking
