Snowdonia, a stunningly beautiful and mountainous land, carved byglaciers and bathed in mystery, unsurprisingly became Wales’ firstnational park and the second biggest in England and Wales coveringover 840 square miles.

The new £8.3m visitor’s centre ‘Hafod Eryri’ on the summit ofSnowdon, Wales’ highest mountain officially opened during theSummer of 2009.

The new visitor centre is a unique designed structure built of granitewith large views from the "window on the world" wall of glass whichmakes up the front of the centre. It acts as a terminus for theSnowdon Mountain Railway providing refreshment facilities, toiletsand interpretation of the mountain, its history and ways to enjoy it.Much of the interpretation is built into the structure. Lines of poetryfrom the former National Poet of Wales, Gwyn Thomas, are alsobuilt into the building which will at last provide a suitable structureas the highest building in Wales and England.

Hafod Eryri does close over the winter. Therefore when closedthere are no toilet facilities, no café, no shelter and no trains on thesummit of Snowdon. Please contact one of the areas TouristInformation Centres for closing and opening dates. Weatherpermitting, it will re-open during spring 2010.

Snowdon itself, at 3,560 feet (1,085m), is obviously the primedestination for many with the most popular routes to the summitbeing the Llanberis Path, which runs parallel to the SnowdonMountain Railway and the more strenuous Pyg and Miner’s tracks. However, there are a number of other mountain ranges that areequally as beautiful and challenging such as Y Carneddau, YGlyderau, Y Rhinogau and Cader Idris.

The scenic North Wales Path which follows the coast and lowermountain slopes between Prestatyn and Bangor offers fascinatingsights such as Aber Falls and the Druid’s Circle whilst the traffic freecyclepath from Barmouth to Penmaenpool provides stunning viewsof the glorious Mawddach estuary.

A series of four Slate Trails, Bro Nantlle, Bro Ffestiniog,Bro Peris and Bro Ogwen, will give you a fascinatinginsight into the industrial heritage of the area.

A game fisherman’s heaven, Snowdonia has more than a 100 lakes(‘llyn’ in Welsh), all with their own distinct character and setting, from the glacial Llyn Cwellyn in the north to Tal y Llyn with itsexquisite calm and beauty nestling between dramatically steepmountain slopes in the south. Wales’ largest natural lake Llyn Tegid,in Bala, stretches out gracefully between the high peaks of AranBenllyn, Arenig Fawr and the spectacular Berwyn mountains. LlynCrafnant, Llyn Dywarchen, and Cregennan lakes are well stockedwith excellent trout whilst the stunningly beautiful glacial LlynOgwen and Nantlle hold elusive wild brown trout. Trawsfynydd lake, the location of Camelot as seen in the film First Knight, has hostednumerous international fishing competitions and is regarded as oneof the premiere fishing reservoirs in Wales.

Excellent river fishing is available on various rivers throughout theregion including the Llyfni, Dwyfor, Glaslyn, Mawddach and Conwy.Known for their wild brown trout, abundant salmon and sea troutcan also be caught during late summer.

The traditional nature of the region’s fishing has ensured that localWelsh fly patterns such as the Diawl Bach, Haul a Gwynt and Coch yBonddu are still firm favourites today. However, some excellentCoarse fishing available mainly on privately owned lakes is regardedas a fast growing alternative to the more traditional fly fishing.

Excellent shore and sea fishing is available along most of thestunning 300km coastline, in particular places such as Caernarfon,Conwy, Nefyn, Llanfairfechan, Penmaenmawr and Trefor whilstcharter boat fishing can be organised from many of the harbourvillages and marinas. The numerous tackle shops are happy to advise.
