Fold Mountains

• Fold mountains are the most common mountains

• The worlds largest mountain range are fold mountains

• Fold mountains were formed millions of years ago

• Fold mountains are formed when two tectonic plates collide and crumble upwards forming mountains

Volcanic Mountains

• Volcanic mountains are formed when magma erupts from deep within the earth

• When the magma hardens it piles up an the volcano and builds it up

• Some of the more well known mountains are Mt St. Helens in North America, Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines, Mt. Kea and Mt. Loa in Hawaii

Plateau Mountains

• Plateau mountains are formed by erosion• They are large flat areas that have been

forced upwards within the earth• They are also formed by layers of lava• They are mostly found near fold mountains• Many plateau mountains are found in New

Zealand

• Normally mountains are higher than 600m• If it is less than 600m it is called a hill• Some mountains are formed from tectonic

plates pushing together• Mountains are home to one tenth of the

worlds population
