Mountains
Volcanic, Dome and Fold mountains
Volcanic Mountains• Volcanic Mountains are mountains
made of igneous matter (ash, magma and rock) spilt out of a volcano.
• Over 70% of all volcanic eruptions occur in the worlds oceans.
• Volcanoes are formed when magma deep in the earth erupts through the earths surface as lava and eventually piles up on hardened lava from previous eruptions to create a cone shaped mountain.
• Different Volcanoes >Mt Helens >Kilauea
Dome Mountains• Dome mountains are formed
when magma beneath the crust pushes up on the plate to try and form a volcano but the plate is to thick so it can’t penetrate and it creates a dome mountain instead
• Eventually the Magma rises to high and hardens thus creating a stable mountain and a new layer of rock.
• Dome mountains start as low lying sedimentary rock and as we have explained before the mountain is then created by magma.
•Dome mountains are often formed in New Zealand + an example of a Dome mountain is…
>Mt Kea
Fold mountains• Fold mountains are formed when two
tectonic plates collide and their edges crumple to form mountains.
• There are two ways Fold mountains can be created, one way is that one plate goes above the other. The other way is that both plates collide head on and both of them rise.
• Fold mountains include >the Himalayas >the Andes
> The Rockies
