Dear EOU Family,Welcome to the winter edition of The Mountaineer. Rest assured

that as the cover photo depicts, we have enjoyed a “real” winter herein the Grande Ronde Valley. And as your interimpresident over the past nine months, I too havealso had a “real” experience.

When you first join a university as a businesseducation teacher, the idea that you might complete your career as the President of thatorganization is a distant thought, and not one Ihad ever even dreamed about in 1973.

However, when Chancellor Jarvis contactedme about serving in this position, I was bothhonored and humbled. Since June 2003, I have

had the great honor and personal pleasure of serving this University asits president. In short, it has been awesome.

After working at EOU for more than 30 years, I know that there is apassion and dedication to everything we do, and that has only beenreinforced each day as I work with faculty, students, staff, alumni, community members and others who all are working very hard tomake EOU an even better place. I look out upon a campus that is abeautiful sight to behold. New and improved facilities, well-cared forlandscaping, and a community both on and off the campus thatdemonstrates its caring in many, many ways. As a former EOU presidentonce remarked during his inaugural address, “We are truly all in thistogether.” I personally believe that “together” is a great place to be.

I am both pleased and saddened in many ways for this to be my firstand last Mountaineer letter to you. This spring, new leadership will bejoining the EOU family. President-designate Dr. Khosrow Fatemi andhis wife, Marcella, will officially join the EOU family on May 26 whenhe assumes his duties as President. The Fatemis have made frequenttrips to La Grande over the past several months, and their excitementincreases with each visit. Everything they have experienced, from visitsto downtown businesses to a major event such as the President’s ClubGala, have shown them that it's the people who make EOU so veryspecial.

As I prepare for my retirement from EOU at the end of June, I do sowith wonderful memories, great respect for all members of the EOUcommunity, and a firm belief that we will survive our current challengingtimes, and thrive into the future with talented staff, committed students, and a community of alumni and friends who believe in thisamazing institution as much as I do. I encourage you to continueyour connection to EOU. I know that I will. As Bob Hope often said,“Thanks for the memories.”

Eastern Oregon Universitystudents can earn their bache-lor’s degree with fewer creditsnow.

Starting fall term, students atany stage of their EOU collegecareer need only a minimum of180 total credit hours to earn abachelor’s degree – a reductionfrom 186 credit hours. Thenew policy applies to every stu-dent – freshmen through sen-ior. The six credits eliminatedcan only be used for electivecourses and not general educa-

tion, university or program-required classes.

The decision to lower theminimum credit hours cameafter John Miller, provost andvice president for academicaffairs learned that EOU wasthe only Oregon UniversitySystem school of the seven pub-lic universities in the state thatstill required a minimum of 186credit hours.

Eastern Oregon University students andrecent graduates who are seeking direction intheir job search now have a new tool to employ.

The Career Services Center and AlumniAssociation have developed an online mentor pro-gram designed to help students and recent gradu-ates connect in their occupational field of interest.

“We’ve been doing this forabout a year now,” said CareerServices Director Sally Click.“We’ve recruited alumni, friends and parents of the insti-tution and have about 40 mentors in our pool.”

Click would like to have the mentor poolincrease in diversity.

“With our high numbers of liberal arts andbusiness majors, more mentors representing awide variety of career fields the better,” shesaid. “We are dedicated to having people in thepool and bringing people to the pool to take

advantage of the wealth of career information.”Students and graduates can access the mentors

when they want to get information on a partic-ular career field. Those who use the MentorConnection are coached on what questions toask. Those who sign on as mentors are coachedon how to respond to questions. Mentors have

the option to be contacted byphone, e-mail or both.

“It’s about developing con-tacts and getting ideas,” saidClick, stressing that the men-

tors are not there to hand out jobs.“Good information on career fields helps

students make good decisions,” said Click.“For mentors, this is a great way to share theirtime, talent and expertise.”

A dream that has existed for 40 years becamea reality of glorious proportions on Oct. 4.

The new wing of Eastern OregonUniversity’s Science Center took flight duringa ribbon tying ceremony Saturday morning.

“This is a gold mine of opportunity forimproving and expanding our mission,” EOUchemistry professor Anna Cavinato said.

The new 67,000-square-foot building fea-tures 27 high-tech labs, a large greenhouse,many classrooms and a 7,500-square-footbiotech lab.

Several ribbons were tied together duringthe ceremony to symbolize the many partner-ships that have allowed the wing to be com-pleted.

The building is the centerpiece of a $33.5million Science Center project. It will be com-pleted over the next year with the renovationof EOU’s old science building, Badgley Hall, and the addition of a 150-seat auditorium.

While construction of the new buildingstarted April 1, 2002, people have been dis-cussing it ever since Badgley Hall was com-pleted in 1965. The original Badgley Hallplans called for its expansion. Budget prob-lems delayed the work, said Dixie Lund,EOU’s interim president.

Still, EOU science professors and othersrefused to give up on the possibility of anexpanded Science Center.

“They carried the dream,” Lund said. Phil Creighton, EOU's president for five

years through July of last summer, set thewheels for the project in motion and keptthem rolling. Lund saluted Creighton's cre-ative and tireless efforts.

Creighton, now the president of PacificUniversity in Forest Grove, was among about10 people who spoke at Saturday's ceremony. He led off his address by quoting a famousAmerican essayist and author.

Beginning with the Fall 2004sports season, student athletes atEastern Oregon University willonly be playing with one set ofrules.

EOU Interim President DixieLund announced Nov. 5 that theUniversity has selected theNational Association ofIntercollegiate Athletics for itssole athletics affiliation. Theschool already participates in theCascade Conference of theNAIA with most of its teams, including men's and women'sbasketball, volleyball, baseball, soccer, softball, cross-countryand track and field. EOU was

accepted into the NAIA'sFrontier Conference Dec. 11 forparticipation in football becausethe Cascade Conference does notsponsor that sport.

“We have been working withthe issue of dual affiliation withthe NCAA Division III andNAIA since 1996,” said Lund.“The main issue is that playingwithin the restrictions of dualaffiliation does not afford ourstudent athletes the best possibleintercollegiate athletic experiencewe can offer.”

This intriguing group ofwomen last met 38 years

ago and has only one surviv-ing member.

They were on course tobecome a group that time for-got — until this summer.

The Hen Party is the groupin historical question. Itsmembers made a name forthemselves by meeting annual-ly from 1935 to 1965 for atwo-week horseback trip intothe Wallowas. Their storyreveals much about life inNortheast Oregon during thisera.

Theirs is a tale that has beensecured by members of a classat Eastern Oregon University.Students in the Public Art andService Institute class atEastern have prepared an oralhistory of the Hen Party andmade a bell commemoratingthe group. The students’ workhas anchored a piece ofNortheast Oregon’s legacy thatwas in danger of being buriedby the sands of time.

“It was an interesting part of history thatwas at risk of fading away,’’ said Rob Davis, anEnglish/writing professor at EOU.

Davis and Doug Kaigler, an EOU art profes-sor, taught the Public Art and ServiceInstitute class.

The oral history the students captured isbased on an extensive interview with GerdaBrownton of La Grande, the last survivingmember of the Hen Party. Brownton went onHen Party trips in 1946, 1948 and 1951.Being a part of the Hen Party was not some-thing to be taken for granted since one had tobe invited.

“It was a real privilege (to be invited)’’Brownton said in the oral history.

Membership criteria included possessingmountain horseback riding skills and ability tomix well with the group.

The Hen Party took its trips in August. The

women normally rode from Cove to Red’sHorse Ranch and then followed the MinamRiver. They would stop at places such asNorth Minam Meadows, Steamboat Lake,Swamp Lake and Blue Lake.

Hen Party members in addition toBrownton included Jean Birnie, LouiseEpling, Mima McGuire Cooper, Edna Seitz,Julia Gilstrap, Esther Badgley, DorisWilliamson, Marty Reece, Jean Hassel, ReginaQuaintence, Margaret Revis and Enid Bottice. This list may not include everyone who was apart of the Hen Party.

The trips were led and organized by Birnie, awoman who knew much about horsemanshipand wilderness survival. Birnie provided manyof the horses for the trips but more impor-tantly leadership and inspiration.

“She just shone out. Her personality was justabsolutely fabulous,’’ Brownton said.

In its early years, before it was known as theHen Party, men came on the trips. OnceWorld War II started, the group became oneexclusively for women since so many menwere in the military.

The students in the EOU class who helpedprepare the oral history and the commemora-tive bell were Ron Blincoe, Dawna Blincoe,Tom Clarke, Jasen Hansen, Kelly Smutz andRisa Tanzawa.

The oral history Davis’s students made is 20pages long and will be available later in arealibraries and through Eastern OregonUniversity’s Web site. The commemorativebell will be mounted at a home in Cove nearwhere the Hen Party trips started each year.Details on where the bell is displayed will beannounced later. To read the entire story, go online to

A n n u a l F u n dThe Annual Fund is the part of the Foundation’s work thatsecures “unrestricted gifts.” Unrestricted gifts support a variety ofneeds; the dollars are spent where needs are greatest, as determined by the Foundation Executive Committee, operating onrecommendations from a budget subcommittee.

The uses of the Annual Fund differ from year to year, but thereare some constant needs too. Both the alumni and developmentprograms at EOU are partly supported through the unrestricted gifts to the Foundation.

The chart to the right shows a 10-year history of Annual Fundresults. Precise dollar amounts are listed below:

This Club identifies the Foundation’s premiergroup of donors - those who play a leadershiprole in the creation of the Eastern OregonUniversity’s future.

The President’s Club, created in 1998, recognizesdonors who make annual gifts of $1000 or more.

To become a Charter Member of the President’sClub, the donor must pledge to make such a giftfor five years. A gift for any purpose may becounted, although we hope that many donors willchoose to make unrestricted gifts.

The President’s Club members fall into three cate-gories: Founder's Circle for those who give

$10,000 or more in a single year; Trustee’s Circlefor those who give $5,000 to $9,999 in a singleyear; and Dean’s Circle for those who give $1,000to $4,999 in a single year..

All donors to the Foundation are investors in thefuture of the University.

From the Alumni Association President:

Hello Fellow Mountaineers!

It is with great pride and excitement that I greet you today for the first time as the President of the EOU AlumniAssociation. With a new athletic affiliation, EOU’s 75th Anniversary celebration, great plans for Homecoming, upcoming regional events and our new president Dr. Khosrow Fatemi coming on board soon, 2004 promises to be

an exciting and productive year.

I am also pleased to announce the creation of a new tool that will help alumni stay connected with EOU and each other. As you know, the Mountaineer Tracks are published in each edition of this magazine. A complete listing of these updates will

now also be available on-line on the Alumni webpage at www.eou.edu/alumni. All you have to do is click on the link near the top of the screen, pickthe decade in which the alumni you wish to find graduated, and click on the person’s name. If the person has supplied their email, you will also beable to get in touch them right away by clicking the “send an email” link right under their name. You can add your name or update your informationon the webpage and don’t forget to sign-up for the monthly E-New Links as well.

With the Mountaineer Magazine, monthly E-New Links and Mountaineer Tracks On-Line, there are more ways than ever to stay in touch with EOUand each other. I encourage you to take advantage of these tools, and hope to see you soon at a Regional Event in your area and back on campus atHomecoming 2004 in the fall.

Go Mountaineers!
