The 100-Yard JourneyA Life in Coaching and Battling for the Win
Gary Pinkel, Dave Matter
Contributor BioDave Matter is the Mizzou athletics beat writer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and STLtoday.com. Prior to
joining the Post-Dispatch in 2013, he wrote for Columbia Daily Tribune for more than 10 years. He lives in
Columbia, Missouri. Gary Pinkel won 118 games in 15 seasons as the head football coach at the University of
Missouri, becoming the winningest coach in the program's history. During the Pinkel era, the Tigers posted
five seasons with 10 or more wins and reached 10 bowl games. Prior to joining Mizzou, Pinkel was the head
coach at Toledo for 10 seasons and an assistant under Don James at the University of Washington. He lives in
Columbia, Missouri. This is his first book.
SummaryVery few college football coaches earn the distinction of becoming their programs' winningest, but Gary Pinkel
has done it twice. From his nine-year tenure at the University of Toledo to his career at the University of
Missouri from 2001 to 2015, Pinkel has shown he has the talent and meddle to take his teams to the top.
These remarkable achievements have been met by challenges along the way in Pinkel's personal and
professional life, including a DUI and a divorce, a threatened team boycott at Mizzou which dominated
national news headlines, and ultimately, a decision to step away from it all following a diagnosis of
non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
In The 100-Yard Journey, Pinkel offers a glimpse into the mind of a winner as well as an honest reflection on
meeting and overcoming the unexpected. Follow along from the start of Pinkel's coaching career at Kent
State, the same program for which he played as a tight end, through stops at Washington and Toledo, and
finally, taking over at the helm of Missouri, a program he guided to 10 bowl games in 15 years, a No. 1 AP
ranking at the end of the 2...

The Lost Aztiki Tribe and the Mysterious Cave of GoldEdward Loffredo
Contributor BioEdward Loffredo was born in New York City. He went into the Air Force at age 18, and his first station was in
Cheyenne, Wyoming---imagine moving to Cheyenne after only knowing New York City! Ed's friends back in
New York did not know that people in Wyoming drove cars, had electricity, watched TV, and such. So Ed,
being the type of person that he is, started telling tall tales, and Bob the Buffarillo was born. Every time he
went back to New York, the people there expected more stories, and the saga continues to this day. Ed spent
twenty years in the Air Force and retired, but then he was bored, so he took the test for the Post Office and
spent twenty years working there. He is finally in official retirement and can indulge full-time his passions,
which are writing, singing karaoke, and acting. He is now doing all three in Denver, Colorado.
SummaryNever heard of a Buffarillo? Why, it's a creature that's half-gorilla, half-buffalo, and all hero. In "The Lost
Aztiki Tribe and the Mysterious Cave of Gold," Bob and his merry band of adventurers learn of an ancient lost
tribe, a missing princess, and a legendary cave filled with unimaginable treasures. That's more than enough
to start them off on a journey across the Western plains, but what they will find is not at all what they
expect.

Train Stations: Then and Now®Ken Fitzgerald
Contributor BioKen Fitzgerald is a Dallas resident who has written and photographed features for railway periodicals over a
period of 30 years. He is the author of Dallas: Then and Now.
SummaryOnce the hub of the American economy, railroad barons built grand railroad stations across the country in
Spanish Mission, Gothic, Greek Revival, and Richardsonian Romanesque styles, but these structures have
suffered a variety of fates. The notorious razing of Pennsylvania Station in New York brought howls of protest
from the architectural conservation lobby, but Chicago also lost the Chicago and Northwestern Terminal.
Atlanta had a grand Passenger Depot until it was reconfigured by General Sherman in 1864. Savannah
demolished its own impressive Union Station in 1904, but nearby the Central of Georgia station lives on as
the city’s visitor center and museum. Houston ripped up the rails at their Union Station and the platforms
have been replaced by the Houston Astros' Minute Maid Park. Los Angeles’ still operational Union Station
dates from the 1930s and still displays its Art Deco detailing inside with Spanish Mission touches outside. Las
Vegas, the destination for many an L.A. train, had a similar 1930s depot, but today the Plaza casino sits on
the site.

SummaryAstonishing images of vanished Denver, from old hotels and movie houses to streetcars to sports
stadiums
There has been much change in Denver since the first settlers built a small town on the south side of Cherry
Creek and named it Auraria. Streetcar suburbs emerged and were annexed into the city of Denver;
skyscrapers rose and were replaced by even bigger skyscrapers. The streetcars disappeared. Denver’s
baseball team, the Bears, played out of Broadway Park, then Bears Stadium, which became Mile High Stadium
and then a parking lot for Sports Authority Field. The city has lost many of its grand Victorian buildings. The
grand Richardsonian Romanesque Denver Club is gone, along with the Tabor Block and Tabor Opera House.
The theater district on Curtis Street has been transformed, while the Denver Urban Renewal Authority (DURA)
has targeted whole districts for wholesale change. Lost Denver looks at the many aspects of the city that have
disappeared over the last 150 years—the old hotels and movie houses, the civic buildings no longer fit for
purpose, the old bridges, cemeteries, and par...

including Murder at the Brown Palace: A True Story of Seduction and Betrayal and Smaldone: The Untold
Story of an American Crime Family. He lives in Denver, Colorado.
SummaryTake a trip back in time to revel in the scandal, murders, infidelities, financial misdeeds, and just
plain bad behavior from Colorado’s past.
Public respectability does not always translate into tidy private lives, and our interest in the naughty behavior
of the rich and famous will never be satisfied. Former Denver Post reporter Dick Kreck takes us back through
Colorado's history to show that the foibles of people—rich or poor—remain the same. Included are socialites
such as Louise Sneed Hill, who created and ruled over Denver's "Sacred 36" circle of society; Jane Tomberlin,
who met and fell in love with a "prince" in an elevator at the Brown Palace Hotel; Irene Nolan, who cavorted
late into the night with her family priest; and prominent Denver clubman Courtland Dines, who was wounded
during a frolic with two silent-screen stars in his Hollywood apartment.

American Birding Association Field Guide to Birds of ArizonaRick Wright, Brian E. Small
Contributor BioRick Wright leads birding and birds-and-art tours for Victor Emanuel Nature Tours. A widely published writer
and popular lecturer on subjects from sparrow identification to French hummingbird collectors, Wright spent
nine years living and birding in Tucson with his wife, Alison Beringer. They now live in northern New Jersey
—when, that is, they and their chocolate lab, Gellert, are unable to get away to their beloved southeast
Arizona. Brian E. Small has been a full-time professional bird and nature photographer for more than 25
years. He served as the Photo Editor for the American Birding Association's membership magazine Birding for
the past 15 years. Brian grew up in Los Angeles, graduated from U.C.L.A. in 1982 and still lives there today
with his wife Ana, daughter Nicole and son Tyler.
SummarySoutheastern Arizona is a mecca for birders, famous among enthusiasts worldwide for its sky island
mountains and its desert vistas—and for the rare birds that inhabit them. What is less well known is that the
rest of our vast state, from the cool plateaus of the Four Corners to the blazing flats of the Colorado River, is
equally rich: With more than 550 bird species on the official state list, Arizona—all of Arizona—offers birders,
residents and visitors alike, an experience virtually unmatched anywhere else in the US. This new book will
guide both novice and experienced birders to help identify the amazing diversity of bird life in the Sunset
State. Crisp color photographs of birds in nature, authoritative text from an expert birder, and a handy
portable trim size all combine to bring nature lovers a useful and beautiful guide to Arizona's most common
birds.

later, Jack Swilling was traveling on horseback through the region and decided the desert setting was an ideal
place to establish a new community. The name Phoenix came from the idea that, just like the mythical bird,
the new town would spring from the ruins of a former civilization. Phoenix has grown so rapidly that Tempe,
Mesa, Glendale, and Scottsdale have now been absorbed into the metropolitan district. This book looks at the
city as it continued to grow through the 20th century. Sites include: Washington Street, First Avenue, City
Hall, Heard Building, Hotel Adams, Luhrs Building, Phoenix Theater, Orpheum Theater, Hotel San Carlos, Union
Station, Masonic Temple, Hotel Westward Ho, Arizona Capitol, Kenilworth School, Grunow Clinic, Brophy
College, Arizona Biltmo...

2016 High Plains Book Awards, Short Stories
In this debut short story collection from Jerry McGahan, nature in all its fascinating, perplexing, and
maddening varieties intercedes with the complex yearnings, courtings, departings, and returnings of the
human characters who inhabit the fringes of wilderness in contemporary Montana. Comprised of short fiction
selected over a 20-year period, The Deer Walking Upside Down invites readers into a world where hard work
and an abiding respect for all things wild inform the lives of this rural paradise, yet not without a price. As
men and women reconcile passion and inclination, love and the wreckage of aging, there is always work to be
done: fences to be repaired, hives to be tended to, livestock to be fed, and loves to be fostered. Steeped in
the tradition of Jim Harrison and Tom McGuane, this collection marks the arrival of a distinct voice in the
contemporary Western literary landscape.
