BOILER ROOM SCAMS WHAT ARE THEY AND HOW TO

AVOID THEM What is a Boiler Room?

Boiler Rooms are businesses that use high-pressure sales tech-niques to sell "sure thing" invest-ments with the promise of mas-sive returns. In fact, what they're selling is worthless stock in often unquoted companies that are either overvalued, or that simply don't exist at all.

How they work Boiler Room operatives generally cold-call their targets, using phone numbers from publicly-available shareholder lists. Be-cause it's against the law for brokers to cold-call in the UK, they tend to be based abroad (often Spain, Switzerland, or the US) where they are beyond the jurisdiction of the Financial Ser-vices Authority (FSA). They can approach anyone, anywhere.

Boiler Room techniques A Boiler Room can look and sound legitimate. They may mention companies you've heard of, give themselves a UK address or phone number, and possibly even have a professional-looking website. They are notoriously persistent, and can hound a vic-tim for months in the hope of a sale, catching out even seasoned investors. According to the FSA, Boiler Room Scam victims lose on average £20,000. The bottom line is that if an opportunity

sounds too good to be true, then it almost certainly is. The advice is simple. If you think you're being targeted by a Boiler Room, the FSA's advice is not to worry about being polite - just hang up. You should then call the FSA con-tact centre on 0845 606 1234 with as much detail as you can remem-ber. You'll find more information about Boiler Rooms on the FSA web-site www.fsa.gov.uk. If you are re-ceiving unwanted calls from compa-nies, you can register with the Tele-phone Preference Service (TPS) to stop the contact being made. TPS can be contacted 0845 0700707 or visit their website at www.tpsonline.org.uk” PC 4386 Garth HATT Neighbourhood Beat Manager for Liskeard Rural :[email protected] (Liskeard Neighbourhood Office - 01579 325454 +Liskeard Police Station, Luxstowe, Liskeard PL14 3DX (Devon and Cornwall Police en-quiries - 101)

WARLEGGAN HISTORY GROUP Following our AGM where Jasmina reported that we had a very healthy Bank balance, John Keast gave an interesting talk on the Robartes Family of Lanhydrock and how their lives touched those of his own fam-ily. April meeting on Wednesday 24th we heard from Hazel Harradence from the Friends of Luxulyan Valley. Her presentation followed up the fascinating walk we had on New Year’s Day. May meeting on Wednesday 27th as the weather is getting warmer(?!) we are travelling to Pentewan for a guided walk around this his-toric china clay port. PROMPT 6.00pm please Pentewan Car Park. Our June meeting will actually take place on Monday 1st July. We have been invited by St Neot Historians to a joint meeting at Trengoffe with a speaker who will have knowledge of the building vernacular of the wonderful barns here. Meet at Pantersbridge at 6.30pm.

IN MEMORY OF MR. ROGER FARNWORTH

(Editor’s note : Wilfried & Gisela from Germany have been holiday-ing at The Rookery for 25 years and have sent me below their memory of Roger requesting that I place it in MAWL newsletter) For 25 years Wilfried and I enjoyed a very precious friendship with Rog-er. Unexpectedly he came into our lives when we rented Pandia about 26 years ago. However, equally un-expectedly he vanished from it. We shared wonderful dinner nights dis-cussing a large variety of highly

significant issues dealing with many aspects of life enriched by Roger's vast knowledge of Cornish nature and culture, archaeology, astrono-my, the sciences, philosophy, reli-gion as well as art. We loved him for his charming tolerance, his dear friendship, his overwhelm-ing joy of life and for the opportuni-ty to let us share his deep love of Cornwall. His untimely death leaves a deep scar in Warleggan, Cornwall, Britain and in all the countries he travelled. Roger 's death has plunged us into a state of mourning despair. We will always keep a loving memory of this unique and charismatic Cor-nishman. Wilfried and Gisela

MOUNT CHAPEL What a wonderful Minister we have in Robert Saunders together with the great support from Marion his wife. We are indeed blessed to have them with us. The Palm Sunday Service was great—all sang with gusto as we had the promise of saffron buns which we all appreciated! Palm crosses were given to the congre-gation. The children decorated the buns and the crosses and them-selves! Rev Robert then explained the Easter story which was depicted by the Members in each of the Chapel windows. Then came Good Friday—a time of rememberance. Although a sad time in the Biblical calendar we were glad to have the Millpool Chorale and John and Rosemary Heard with us to help us

Then came the great day—Easter Sunday—now we could really cele-brate not only the risen Christ but also to welcome back our dear friend and his family—Dr John Gates. MAY 2013 Food is pretty central to my life. It is a great joy to be able to sit down and eat well, especially when you are in the company of family and friends. Food gives us life and enables us to have the energy that we need in order to meet the challenges of the day. Nobody should ever skip breakfast! And my dictionary of quotations gives that wonderful book “1066 and All That” as saying “Napoleon’s armies always used to march on their stomachs shouting “Vive l’interieur!” No doubt every General knows that his soldiers need to be kept well fed. When we see pictures of those who do not have enough food, we all know that something is badly wrong. I imagine that most of us give reg-ularly to some charity that seeks to alleviate such suffering. Then there are those in hospital and care homes who cannot feed themselves; if we know them and love them, then surely we need to help them whenever we can. Of course, sometimes food can become a psychological battle-ground; this may be tragic and hard to address. It does not alter the fact that food is meant for our good and to be a source of life. More than that, it is around food that much that is best about human society devel-ops. At mealtimes, we share things and communicate with one another. We learn to watch out for our neighbours, anticipating their needs: they should not necessarily have to ask for the butter or the sauce; we should gladly offer it to them. At mealtimes we learn to pay attention to one another. No wonder then that at the heart of Christianity lies a meal – The Last Supper. Jesus must have wanted so much to be able to go on sharing his life with his friends. And this is precisely what he continues to do in the Holy Communion services celebrated every Sunday around the world. Here we meet and share all that we are, in companionship with Jesus of Nazareth, our friend. Andrew

PARISH MEETING AGM REPORT The following is an informal snap-shot of what was said and what happened (formal draft minutes will be published when received) of the recent Annual General Meet-ing, held on Tuesday 16th April 2013. Police report: three crimes over the last twelve months – two drunk driving (people from outside the parish) and one domes-tic issue. Warned to be aware of rising cases of theft of heating oil, and the in-creasing risk of metal theft. If pa-rishioners want to have someone come round to discuss security free of charge, call 101 and make an ap-pointment.

Hustings for upcoming local elections of 2 May 2013: an opportunity to hear from and question candidates for the up-coming local elections, their background, interests and poli-cies - of the four candidates in-vited, three were able to attend – the candidates nominated for St Cleer Division are: Len Clark (Independent), David Garth Lu-cas (UK Independence Party), L i s a J a n e S a r g e a n t (Conservative Party), Derris Rosslyn Watson (Liberal Demo-crats)

Warleggan Parish Elections: It was agreed that Pat Phillipps would continue as Chairman, and Andy Martin. would contin-ue as Clerk. For the Planning Sub-Committee there were nine candidates for the eight posi-tions. Following a ballot the duly elected members of the

Planning Sub-Committee for the year 2013-14 were: Ve-ronica Courts, Julie Grose, John Jory, Andrew Lane, Gary Short, Geoff Smeeth, Ian Watson, and Diane Wells. We now also have a position of Vice Chairman which for the year 2013-14 is to be filled by Julie Grose.

Amazingly Village Greens is four years old on May 1st. The business was set up as a not-for-profit or-ganisation and we have magnifi-ciently succeeded in that ambi-tion. More importantly though we have managed to avoid making a loss and generally things bumble along very nicely. We shall be celebrating the fourth anniversary by doing absolutely nothing. With Derek and Di's fan-tastic breakfasts, those lovely cus-tardy things that Lynda makes, Tam's cakes, etc, etc, what more could you ask for ? P.S. most of our stuff is much cheaper than Morrisons.

CARN TO COVE

From time to time in the Jubilee Hall we have Carn to Cove perfor-mances. This organisation is Cornwall’s performing arts touring scheme which brings quality professional artists into rural areas.

Carn to Cove enables rural communities to bring something 'different' to their village hall, to bring wonderment and fun into the community, to make people gasp and cry with laughter, to create a social event to bring the village together or to make a bit of money for hall funds! Twice a year two or three people from the Hall Committee attend Menu Evenings when we choose an act for the forthcoming season. Any one can come along with a Committee Member to these evenings. Any help we can get to enable us to pick the right act for the community here in Warleggan is very welcome. Contact Liz 821551 / Gill 821494 / Jas-mina 821223.
