WELCOMEThe Foundation Executive will officially welcome Ricky Smorgon to the team at the 2011 AGM.

THANK YOUWe thank Michael Slonim who will be retiring after 5 years for his input and contributions.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND THE PRESIDENT

Dear Foundation members and friends

Our 2010 Annual Report featured our youngest students enjoying the exciting developments at Gandel Besen House. This year, we are delighted to bring you the students of the Smorgon Family Primary School in their spacious, bright and welcoming new environment.

This brand new development on the Gandel Campus for Years 4, 5 and 6, together with play and sport areas and the much-celebrated kitchen garden project, are indicative of the quality of our renewal program.

Furthermore, our secondary students began the 2011 school year in air-conditioned and refurbished classrooms.

All of these projects are part of our ‘Ready to Roar’ fundraising campaign. The buildings were completed in record time due to stipulations imposed by the government. However, they are yet to be fully funded!

We thank our members who have made their pledge to this campaign, which not only provides new learning environments but supports tuition bursaries, Israel experience scholarships and other programs. Your generosity has been heart-warming and we are pleased to report that since the last Annual General Meeting, over $2.5 million has been pledged by donors and $1.4 million received from two Bequests. Notwithstanding, the Foundation must raise another $6 million+ to meet the cost of these inspiring projects that are being enjoyed by our students and staff.

The ongoing efforts of the Foundation Executive are valued and our appreciation goes to Vice-Presidents Sam Alter and Stewart Baron together with Paul Bassat, Joey Borensztajn, Russell Casper, Jack Hansky, Michael Slonim, Roy Tashi and Executive Director, Marilyn Simon.

We take this opportunity to thank Michael Slonim for his contribution, who, after 5 years, is retiring from the Executive, and also to welcome Ricky Smorgon who will officially join the team at the AGM.

Scopus continues to be able to boast achievement, growth and progress in every area and we proudly congratulate Principal, Rabbi James Kennard, and all his staff for their vision and immense efforts.

Similarly, we thank College President, Lisa Kennett, the College Executive and Council for providing the leadership and support that is vital to their success.

A contemporary but solid Jewish education, together with impressive general programs and activities, continue to inspire an ever-growing number of Scopus students. Our progress is evident well beyond buildings. Upon entering the College, the Scopus ‘ruach’ (spirit) is palpable. Our students are flourishing, in and out of the classroom, whilst all the time being conscious of their Jewish heritage and traditions.

In this Report you will again find profiles of some of our Foundation members and we thank them for sharing their stories. They agreed to participate hoping they will

encourage others to become more involved. Please do – your support will provide for our

students’ learning environment and, most importantly, impact on the number of children who can enjoy the Scopus experience.

Please join us to provide the “Strength and Courage to Build our Foundation for the Future”.

A donor, who has generously added to his initial endowment to fund the Sarah and Peter Komesaroff Memorial Bursaries.

A donor, whose significant donation will be invested in the Scholarship Fund to provide ongoing bursaries.

We also acknowledge the annual support of the Bachrach Foundation, the Victor Smorgon Scholarship Fund and the Werdiger Family.

ISRAEL EXPERIENCE SCHOLARSHIPS,BURSARIES AND AWARDS

Over the last 6 years, 349 students will have enriched their lives, enhanced their Jewish identity and deepened their connection to Israel by participating in one of the Mount Scopus College Israel Experience Programs.

For 101 of these students, the experience was only made possible with the significant assistance offered by the Helen and Bori Liberman Family. This year, 15 students will participate in the 11 week program and 53 will enjoy the 5 week experience. Both now include 3 days in Prague.

The College is most grateful to the Liberman Family for their support, which they have recently extended for another 3 years, and is honoured by their encouragement. Kol HaKavod!

Others students have also benefited by the generosity of the Baer Gutman Family, in memory of Gunther Baer, and the Sylvia and Phillip Munz family.

Page 5: MOUNT SCOPUS MEMORIAL COLLEGE FOUNDATION--- ANNUAL … … · Roar’ fundraising campaign. The buildings were completed in record time due to stipulations imposed by the government.

I am reminded often of this quotation, attributed to Sir Winston Churchill, whenever I encounter ‘giving’ to Scopus.

So many give their time, their expertise and their financial support – sometimes all three. According to this adage, there are parents, grandparents and community members all ‘making a life’ for themselves.

I’d like to take it one step further. I believe they are not only making a life for themselves but they are also making a life for others. By providing the resources our students require for their learning and to equip themselves for the world beyond school, they are guaranteeing a life for our young people and for our community.

Over the past months I have enjoyed showing our inspiring redevelopments, and the wonderful teaching and learning occurring within, to many families. Everyone, without exception, has been justifiably impressed.

The Foundation’s primary goal is to raise the funds for these projects, now complete and being enjoyed by all, but not yet fully funded. You may not be aware that pledges of $6 million+ are still required to meet the cost of these inspiring projects.

I thank those who have already committed their support and urge everyone else to consider how they could become involved. Foundation membership may not be out of reach, evidenced by a growing number of younger families becoming members.

Gifts to our endowment fund to provide scholarships or bursaries are also welcome. And Bequests in Wills are another most important way of providing support.

I would be delighted to show you around the Scopus of today. To arrange, please call me on 9834 0124. And remember, there will always be a way to match your area of interest with the school’s needs.

Once more, I express my appreciation to Solomon Lew, Henry Lanzer, Sam Alter, Stewart Baron, Paul Bassat, Joey Borensztajn, Russell Casper, Jack Hansky and Roy Tashi for giving so much of themselves to achieve the ambitions of the College.

A MESSAGE FROM THEEXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I also thank Ricky Smorgon for recently taking on the responsibility of becoming one of the team and for his immediate contributions. I acknowledge Michael Slonim, who is stepping down this year, and recognise his efforts and input to our achievements over the last 5 years.

It is always a pleasure to work with College President, Lisa Kennett, Principal, Rabbi James Kennard and their respective teams and I appreciate the cooperation of all my colleagues. Thank you.

In conclusion, I ask you to reflect on the meaning of Winston Churchill’s quote. Please join with the many wonderful people who enjoy ‘making a life’ at Scopus and, most importantly, for Scopus!

NICOLE AND SILVIU ITESCU

We welcome the Itescu family at Founder level of the Foundation and our newest recipients of the Leon Fink Memorial Award for Commitment to Jewish Education.

Nicole and Silviu have always intended that their children should benefit from a Jewish day school education. Isaac, their older son, is just graduating kindergarten at Scopus, and their younger son Alexander will be starting his educational journey in 2013. Many of their family and friends are Scopus graduates and they have witnessed firsthand the value and quality of a Jewish day school education together with its impact on individuals, families and the community at large.

When making their significant pledge earlier this year, Silviu and Nicole commented “Scopus is a high priority for our involvement and financial support because of the emphasis it places on both Jewish and secular education, excellence at all levels, and its well-rounded community focus.

“We feel very privileged to be part of the Scopus family and are particularly happy to be able to help the school in its important role of providing assistance with tuition fees to families who seek a Jewish education for their children”.

LAI AND NIR PIZMONY

The name ‘Pizmony’ is well connected to Scopus. Nir’s late mother, Dalia, arrived at Scopus in 1979 bringing her unique style, passion and commitment as a teacher who would instil a life-long love for Hebrew and Jewish Studies into her young students. Dalia sadly passed away before she saw her own grandchildren become happy Scopus students.

WE THANK OUR MEMBERS FOR SHARING THE MOTIVATION FOR THEIR SUPPORT AND INVOLVEMENT

It was Lai and Nir’s wish to provide support for Scopus and to create a meaningful dedication in memory of Dalia and the impact she had made. Coincidentally, at the same time, the College had expressed a wish to create an Ivrit Language Centre to promote Hebrew as a vital, living language – the perfect way to honour and remember Dalia and her legacy.

The Pizmony family gift to the Foundation will provide the funds to establish this Centre and to provide the relevant resources. We look forward to the opening of the Dalia Pizmony Ivrit Language Centre in 2012 and thank Lai and Nir for their thoughtful support at Benefactor level.

JENNY AND NATHAN BETTER

Jenny, a Scopus graduate of the Class of 1977, and Nathan, are parents to David and Tamara and current students, Rafael and Ronit.

Motivated by a strong belief in Jewish education and the understanding that not everyone can provide it for their family without assistance, they called the Foundation office in 2008 to offer their support. Their wish was simple - to help more children have a Jewish day school education at Mount Scopus Memorial College.

Jenny and Nathan see the comfortable way that their own children engage with the Jewish community and understand the importance that the “feeling of connectedness” has for children generally and for the community overall. Jenny says “for our children, understanding who they are and where they come from and discovering their own particular way of affiliating has certainly been helped by their Jewish day school education.”

Nathan comments that “he appreciates the financial challenge this goal presents to many parents and that contributing to the Foundation is a small way in which to help.”

We thank Jenny and Nathan for their tangible support as Members of the Foundation.

HOPPE and BENKEL FAMILY

Abe and Pola Hoppe left the ruins of Poland for Italy where they married and had their son, Jack. In 1949 they arrived in Melbourne to start a new life and re-establish their Jewish home. Jack began his journey at Scopus in 1953, to be followed by sister Susie in 1960. And so the tradition began.

Jack and Norma have 3 sons - Josh, Adam and Jeremy - who also enjoyed their Scopus days. And now Josh and Ronnit’s children, together with Adam and Angie’s, have begun their own Scopus journey.

Susie and Reuben Benkel’s children, Melissa and Mark, are also Old Collegians. Melissa and Eyal’s daughter is due to start in 2013.

The entire family were always involved and strong supporters of Scopus so it was natural for them to become Foundation members. This year, in loving memory of Abe, the family have extended their support to dedicate one of the new classrooms and also to create prizes in honour of Abe and Pola Hoppe and Luba and Shimon Benkel.

We know their legacy and involvement will continue with the third generation.

Thank you and Yasher Koach.

WILLS AND BEQUESTS

GEORGE SZALMUK

We were saddened at the passing of George Szalmuk who, along with his late wife, Mira, were visionary benefactors of the Szalmuk Family Early Learning Centre which will be their valuable legacy.

Their significant gift allowed the school to take the enlargement and refurbishment of the kindergartens from the ‘wish list’ and make them a priority. At the dedication of the Szalmuk Family Early Learning Centre in 2003, George remarked “It gives me great joy to know that generations of children will pass through these doors. I thank G-d that he has allowed my family and I to give something back to the community, and I hope and pray that the community will benefit.”

We are pleased that George was able to see how the community is benefitting. Our kindergartens are at capacity and the multi-purpose space provides a home for many varied Scopus activities including the weekly student minyan and our popular Gan Gani toddler program.

His memory will be a blessing and an inspiration.

The Foundation notes with sadness the passing over the last year of members

GINI BACHRACHRON KRONGOLDSONIA MAREJNJILL NATHANALEXANDER PETERFREUNDGEORGE SZALMUK

A BEQUEST IN YOUR WILL IS ONE OF THE SIMPLEST WAYS TO LEAVE YOUR LEGACY AND PERHAPS AT A LEVEL NOT POSSIBLE DURING YOUR LIFETIME

WILL YOUR BEQUESTMAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Most definitely. Every Bequest, large or small, will make a unique contribution to our students, the school, and ultimately, to our community.

HOW DO YOU MAKE ABEQUEST TO SCOPUS?

After considering the needs of your family, we encourage you to provide for our future by making Scopus a beneficiary of your Will. Adding a codicil to an existing Will may be an inexpensive option. We suggest you consult your solicitor or financial advisor or ask us for assistance.

WHAT FORM MAY YOURBEQUEST TAKE?

– a specific sum of money

– a percentage of your Estate or the residue of your Estate

– a specific asset, such as property or shares

– articles of value, such as art work

HOW WILL YOURBEQUEST BE USED?Unless you direct otherwise, your Bequest will be managed by the Mount Scopus College Foundation which provides for

– subsidised tuition fees for students who would otherwise be excluded

– scholarships

– additional programs

– development of facilities

We express our heartfelt appreciation to the people from whose Estate the College has benefited and to those who have recently included Mount Scopus College as a beneficiary in their Will.

ESTATE OF HELENE KOHN

Helene Kohn approached us a few years ago, after the death of her husband Paul, to express her wishes in regard to leaving her entire Estate to the Foundation. We were honoured to work with Helene in the preparation of her Will.

After her passing this year, and with the assistance of Executor, Dennis Nassau, her wishes were fulfilled. Her thoughtfulness and legacy will continue with the creation of the Helen and Paul Kohn Bursaries.

We acknowledge this significant and most valuable gift, which will be an inspiration and a blessing, and will be proudly inscribing the names of Helene and Paul Kohn on our Bequest Honour Board.

ESTATE OF ROMAN SCHERER

After a long and eventful journey of discovery, the Foundation is in the final stages of the realisation of the Estate of Roman Scherer, which began late last year. The final component of the Estate, Roman’s loved stamp collection, is gradually being sold with the help of Charles Leski.

As related in the 2010 Annual Report, Roman was a very private person. After his wife passed away he sought to support Jewish education and to preserve his family’s name and we were honoured to be invited to assist his solicitor with the preparation of his Will.

This significant and generous bequest will be recognised by the creation of the Herta and Roman O. Scherer Bursaries and be an everlasting legacy.

If you are considering making Mount Scopus College a beneficiary of your Estate in any way, please call Marilyn Simon, Foundation Executive Director, who will welcome your confidential enquiry and provide the correct wording for insertion in your Will, or perhaps suggest a solicitor. It is our pleasure, when advised of a proposed Bequest, to acknowledge and honour the donor during their lifetime. For any information please call Marilyn Simon on (03) 9834 0124.

WHY WAS THE MOUNT SCOPUS COLLEGE FOUNDATION ESTABLISHED?Created in 1987, it is responsible for major fundraising to advance the College. Through the generosity of its members, it has raised pledges in excess of $40,000,000. Bequests are also warmly welcomed.

Funds have been applied to campus renewal, an endowment fund, tuition fee relief, debt reduction and various programs. Without Foundation support the College would be unable to provide new facilities.

HOW IS IT MANAGED?The goals of the Foundation are pursued by an Executive Committee in consultation with the Principal, College President and College Executive.

The Chairman of the Foundation, since inception, is Solomon Lew. The current President, Henry Lanzer, was appointed in 1996 at which time Marilyn Simon assumed the role of Executive Director.

WHO CAN BE MEMBERS? Members include corporations, individuals and families at every level and from every sector of the community. Classifications of membership are dependent on gift level. Entry level requires a pledge of $20,000 which may be paid over 4 years. There are always opportunities to match a donor’s area of interest with the school’s needs.

DEDICATION OPPORTUNITIES Many attractive dedication opportunities are available to honour your family.

IS YOUR DONATION TAX DEDUCTIBLE? The Mount Scopus College Foundation, the Mount Scopus College Scholarship Fund and the Mount Scopus College School Building Fund are all tax deductible entities.

Residents of the United States may donate and receive an IRS deduction by giving through the British Schools and Universities Foundation, Inc (BSUF), for which we thank them.
