WHAT a difference good snow makes.

Visitor numbers to Mt Buller and Mt Stirling jumped during the week ending August 26 with Mt Buller’s numbers climbing by more than 7000 compared to the same week in 2011.

Overall in that one week some 22,977 reached the moun-tain village and more than 500

visited Mt Stirling compared to 237 for the same week last year.

Visitor numbers for both resorts to date for the year total 216,109 for Mt Buller and 4250 for Stirling.

Calculating the visitor days, 2012 has seen almost a match for last year with 377,956 being recorded and Stirling numbers jumping by more than 1000

over last season. And when comparing all

resort numbers for the last week in August, more than 20,000 additional visitors hit the snow-fields across the alpine regions.

Last year for the same week 41,285 visited ski resorts, while this year, with the excellent snowfalls, 61,684 hit the slopes in one week.

Year to date visitor num-bers have also soared by more than 50,000 above last year’s figures.

With excellent skiing and snowboarding conditions ex-pected to continue well into spring, visitor numbers are sure to keep rising and may top that one million mark reached in 2008.

Visitor numbers continue to riseON THE SLOPES: Mt Buller’s Bourke Street and ski school area looked a picture last week with fine conditions and plenty of people.

Disabled WinterSport Australia gets active

College annexe opens its doors

AT WORK: The class of 2012 of the Mansfield Secondary College Mt Buller annexe at work.

DISABLED Winter-Sport Australia (DWA) has commenced a new in-resort service program for its members at Mt Buller, enabling more people with disabilities to participate in snowsports.

Run in conjunction with the Mt Buller Ski and Snowboard School, the four-weekend pro-gram at Mt Buller is de-signed to: suppor t Bul le r

snowsports school and instructors in adaptive snowsport lessons; provide additional

adaptive equipment for use by DWA members and the snowsport school; assist in technical

equipment training for Buller Adaptive Instruc-tors relevant to the equip-ment provided; and to promote and re-

cruit local DWA Adaptive Snowsport Guides and awareness of adaptive snowsports at Mt Buller.

Nat ional program manager for DWA, Sven Erikson, said he was pleased to have the pro-gram operate at Mt Buller regularly.

“We have an increas-

ing membership base enjoying the services at Buller ranging from Buller ambassador and Paralympian Mitch Gour-ley to first time snow-boarders,” Erikson said.

“We are looking for-ward to working with Buller to help support skiers and riders with a disability on a regular basis.”

DWA is the peak body for disability wintersport in Australia, with mem-bers ranging from rec-reational skiers to Winter Paralympians.

Membership to the organisation is based on accessibility, both physical and financial, with members entitled to concessions on lift passes and private les-sons at a number of ski resorts, as well as access to an extensive range of adaptive ski equipment, discounted accessible accommodation, and a range of skill develop-ment, sport and recrea-tional programs.

For further informa-tion on DWA go to www.disabledwintersport.com.au.

By ADRIAN LAWRENCE

THE Mansfield Secondary College Mt Buller annexe opened its doors for the first time this ski season.

Some 16 MSC students were joined by nine students from schools across Melbourne and Geelong to complete their academic studies alongside their snow-sports training.

The program, headed by Adrian Lawrence and ably staffed by Lesley Macgregor, Rachael Noble, Sandy Mackinnon and Wendy Jagger, has provided these students with a fantastic opportunity.

The annexe operates from 1pm to 4pm each day out of the Alpine Central building, adjacent to the Mansfield Primary School annexe.

Students are engaged in a core academic program

which complements their morning snowsports training commitments.

The program has found great support from the resort management board, parents and staff at the secondary college.

The response of all stakeholders has been overwhelmingly positive with students and parents and staff providing fantastic feedback over this development period.

Annexe staff have worked tirelessly to develop and implement an effective program that takes into account the academic needs of all students involved.

A great deal of work has gone into complementing the MSC academic program with those of students’ schools in Melbourne and Geelong.

The annexe will serve as a great addition to the services offered on Mt Buller throughout the winter season.

JOHN McDonald Snr knows Mt Buller up and down, inside out, back to front, and loves it dearly.

This year marks a great achievement in his 33-year history with the mountain.

In April John, after many years of battling bu-reaucracy, has had changed the lease agreements with government for the alpine regions.

Although pushing for strata titling, which has not as yet happened, a format has been adopted which gives lodge and commer-cial operators stronger holds over the land on which their buildings stand.

Head leases and sub-leases can now be recog-

nised as ‘owned’ and can be held as collateral to gain mortgages and loans against purchases or rede-velopment.

Up until now only “un-registered leases” on the land have been held, and because title holders did not own the land, many banks and lending authorities did not consider properties as good collateral.

“These documents are now being used as a prec-edent for anyone else want-ing to change from their unregistered leases to the new format,” John said.

“It all started some years ago when we wanted to substantially enhance the property on the leasehold at Breathtaker, which was originally held for the bal-ance of 55 years with no right of further extension.

“I wanted more security over the investment, so I went to the Minister and ultimately gained a new head lease, which has been accepted for a new initial 51-year term.

“This has also come with a right to renegoti-ate a further period at any time within the final three years before expiry

of the new lease.“And it now gives a

registerable form of ‘title’ for lending purposes.”

The new leasing agree-ments have taken John 10 years to formulate, but as he said “the crown is happy, the RMB is happy, the ATO is happy, we are happy; it just took common sense to see it through”.

Having been associated with the mountain since 1979, he first started skiing when looking for a winter sport.

He was introduced to skiing (firstly at Falls Creek) by an old Hungar-ian friend.

Working in Adelaide as a chartered account-ant, with a family of three young children, he wanted a family activity.

At Falls Creek he start-ed getting involved with mountain development and being offered the purchase of a lift company by Bill Bridgeford, but decided against it.

“Bill then said to me why not go to Mt Buller - a place that really needs modernising, and if not at Buller then try Stirling,” he said.

“I went to Buller staying the first year at Enzian and at the end of the year put in a bid for the site to build Breathtaker.”

At the time John was CEO of Macmahon Hold-ings and its subsidiaries, one of Australia’s leading civil engineering and min-ing public companies.

After Breathtaker was built, and had operated for some time, he was ap-proached by the Hilton-Wood family who owned one of two lift companies (Blue Lifts) operating on Buller.

The Blue Lift Company was struggling at this time and Orange Lifts was get-ting the upperhand.

John, in his role as CEO of Macmahon was able to appropriate heavy earthmoving equipment to Mt Buller to remove and reshape one of the biggest impediments at the moun-tain, being the enormity of size and number of large rocks and boulders from previously inaccessible terrain.

By effectively grooming the slopes, snowmaking became effective and the use of in-season mechani-cal snow-grooming equip-ment became much more efficient.

Even Bourke Street was enhanced by having its width virtually trebled.

“Two lift companies op-erating on the same moun-tain at the same time was a nightmare,” John said.

“I often referred to the competition between them as being worse than the Orangemen and the Green in Ireland - they despised each other.”

The Blue introduced Australia’s first detachable quad lift, erected up the spine of Bourke Street, right up to Baldy.

“Overnight this turned around Blue into being a major competitor against Orange who was a fierce competitor,” John said.

Eventually John put a proposal to Orange Lifts

chairman, David Hume, to take over Blue and merge the two lift companies which then transformed Buller overnight.

“It made it a really won-derful place to go to - the merger changed every-thing,” John said.

We naturally combined all aspects of the two lift companies and it is now difficult to imagine the patrons’ horrors of the past.

Several years after the merger he became unwell as a result of childhood Po-lio, contracting Post Polio Syndrome.

“I was not well at the time and gave orderly no-tice to my companies and ended up having major sur-gery which took two years to overcome after resigning my positions,” he said.

“However, prior to the period of resignation I be-came very friendly with Rino Grollo – I am not sure how that relationship started - but was very bond-ing and I influenced Rino to purchase an initial and sub-stantial interest in the lift company - Rino took over the day-to-day operation.”

John recalls that Rino’s later comment was “John you presented me with an opportunity that I thought I would never be given and you changed my life”.

“Rino has expanded Buller and put further and greater capital into snow-making, lifting and other grand structures up there,” John said.

John bought back Breathaker and also Pin-nacle Valley Resort with son John taking over the day-to-day management of Breathtaker.

John Snr has two boys and a daughter all into high profile management.

Caroline, a banker, now lives in New York with her corporate manager husband Paul; John Jnr continues as Breathtaker managing director and Justin, the youngest son, is a senior captain with Cathay Pa-cific, based in Hong Kong.

AS Mt Buller pokes its head into spring, there are those who can’t wait for the snow to melt and for sunny days and dusty trails to emerge - mountain bike trails that is.

With a threefold increase in trail usage experienced during the 2011-12 summer bike season, Mt Buller is again gearing up for another summer biking season, that will no doubt set new records.

The official opening date of the MTB trail network is scheduled for December 1 and 2, but MTB riders will be beating a path to Mt Buller well before this, if the number of enquiries received through winter is anything to go by.

Prior to this date, riders should be aware that trails will not quite be at 100 per cent, with a large amount of work required post winter to clear windfall, to repair trails and buff this near 100km of dedicated MTB trails.

Major MTB events have already been secured for 2013 contributing to a hectic summer calendar.

Mt Buller will host the first round of the MTBA National Se-ries, from January 16 to 20, with both cross country and downhill disciplines contested.

The following weekend, January 26–27, Mt Buller will see round four of the Victorian Downhill se-ries, hosted by The Fat Tyre Flyers, and if past years are anything to go by, this will bring a big number of gravity assisted thrill seekers to the mountain.

Returning for its fifth year, the iconic Bike Buller MTB festival is confirmed for March 9 to 11.

The Labor Day long weekend will again attract MTB lovers from all over Australia to what is fast becoming one of the country’s must-do bike events.

Happy trails and lots of cycling in summer

RIVER TRAIL: Dave ‘Danger’ McCoombe and Andrew Railton riding the spectacular Delatite River Trail at Mt Buller, easily one of the resort’s most popular MTB trails. PHOTO: Kit Rundal

Expect entry numbers to be nudging 1000 riders in 2013.

Road cyclists will not be left out of the equation, and many will climb the 16km from Mirimbah as part of the 7 Peaks Alpine Ascent Challenge.

And then the resort will wel-come the ever popular Scody High Country Cycle Challenge and the Mansfield to Mt Buller Road Race over the weekend of March 16 and 17.

Combine all this with bike opera-tions such as the Mirimbah Store shuttle, the hire and ride clinics

from All Terrain Cycles and MTB-Skills.com, chairlift assisted down hilling in January, and a bunch of cycle friendly lodges open through-out summer, Mt Buller can already guarantee a summer packed with cycle based fun.

For more information head to www.mtbuller.com.au/summer/bike-buller or contact the Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management Board’s guru of all things bike, Ben Annear, at [email protected].

Happy trails and keep it rubber side down.

YOU don’t have to be a skier or snowboarder to explore the mountain.

Simply jump on either the Northside Express or Blue Bullet Express chairlifts and enjoy a breathtaking ride across Mt Buller’s slopes.

The Northside Chairlift on the northern slope departs from the day car park and will take you to Spurs Lookout.

The Blue Bullet Express Chairlift runs directly above Bourke Street, allowing you to watch all of the on-slope action.

Tickets are available from any ticket office or Buller Sports Outlet.

You can purchase single or multiple ride tickets.

Enjoy the ride even without skis or snowboard

KATE McDOUGALL

KATE McDougall has had an association with Mt Buller for the past 34 years, having started skiing from the age of about seven.

Juggling the life of a busy mother of three (two are in primary school on Mt Buller at present), a home and working at the Mt Buller Medical Centre, life gets a little hectic during winter.

When the ski season is over, the McDougall family return to Mans-field where life returns to being a little more normal.

But Kate loves the snow and skiing and her favorite Mt Buller run de-pends a lot on the weath-

“What I like most about Mt Buller is its a great community to be a part of, like one big family, the ski terrain is challenging and diverse, the sunset at the top of the Summit is sublime,” Kate said.

Dynamic success with 5500 students showing prowess

THE 55th Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships, held last week at Mt Buller, were a success, with more than 5500 students, competing in all disciplines, from across the state.

And local students again recorded great re-sults for both Mansfield primary and secondary schools.

For the Secondary Col-lege, the best results came from Mt Buller annexe student Patrick Cahill, who came first in the snowboard GS and third in the snowboard cross.

Along with teammates Jesse Rickard and Mac Cooper they came first and third in the respective team events.

John Mongan finished top ten in his events, while the team of Mitch Green-way, Austin Spierings and Jack Scott took out two silver results for their snowboard events.

Gracie Woodsford had a blinder of a run in the division one skiercross to win convincingly as well as showing versatility across disciplines to place sixth for the boardercross.

WINNERS of the 2012 James Boag ABOM Mogul Challenge this week were Mt Buller pair Matthew Graham and Britteny Cox.

The win marks the fourth straight t i t le for Graham, with Cox winning her third straight title.

The world class Austral-ian junior athletes have set records, with Cox now joining Maria Despas in having the most female ABOM titles in the event’s history.

With win number four, only one other male athlete

has won the event more times than Graham – Australian Nick Cleaver, who amassed five victories between 1991 and 1995.

Beating out a host of com-petitiors from all across the globe, with many coming all the way from Korea, the AIS/NSWIS athletes dominated the track.

Both winners were award-ed AIS/NSWIS scholarships for the first time in 2010, they made their World Cup debuts in the same year and this season has seen them

balancing HSC school studies with continuing their quest to represent Australia at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games.

With both competitiors focusing more on studying this year, Graham admitted that he has spent about 50 per cent less time on snow this winter, compared with previous years, so winning his fourth ABOM has provided additional satisfaction.

“I felt a little bit of pressure today, but I made sure that my approach was the same as usual,” Graham said.

“It involves making sure I remain mentally calm, putting down a solid run and don’t overdo it.

”Winning was very satisfy-ing, as the ABOM is a special event for everybody who com-petes in it.”

Cox, a World Cup medallist in the USA last February, said the win was the perfect way to bounce back from a 4th and 6th place at last month’s National Championships in Perisher.

“I’m so excited and really pleased to win,” Cox said.

Graham, Cox defend titles

berths in the ‘nationals’.The Comben broth-

ers led the alpine charge in their divisions, with Charlie bronze for moguls and a top ten finish for skiercross and alpine GS, while Jackson placed fifth in moguls.

Doug Crawford and Mitch Reeves also had top ten success in their events.

Lachy Davies put in a great personal best to win bronze in the moguls and with Jared Rodden and Jackson Comben, were second in moguls.

Of note was the com-bination of Allie-May Angliss, Ally Howie and Kaitlyn Whyte who had three team podiums for alpine GS, moguls and skiercross.

MSC attained 20 teams and 37 individuals quali-fying for the National Championships currently being held in Perisher.

Mansfield Secondary College again has asserted itself as a top state snow-sports school, narrowly behind Geelong Grammar who won the combined team trophy.

Mansfield Primary School had a terrific week as well.

Daniel Walker won gold in the division 5 moguls with Ned Angliss second and together with Warwick Crawford they also won the team gold.

The same outfit came second in the skiercross and Warwick Crawford placed second individually.

The ‘new’ just kept on coming, as only a week or two into the season and the big announcement of the Frank Health Insurance partnership with Buller Ski Lifts for upgrading the snowboarding parks was announced.

Along with an injection of funds into the area for improvements to infra-structure and a boost to the profile of the parks, the sponsorship intro-duced new participating events such as the Frank Freestyle Friday – which then became regular Fri-day competitions with tips from park crew and local coaches.

The Athlete’s Walk was completed and officially opened by Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith, along with resort management board members and execu-tive staff.

Also this year saw a record number of school students enrolled in Mt Buller Primary School and the first time a Mansfield Secondary College annexe was open with more than 20 students taking lessons on the slopes and in the classroom.

Mt Stirling was not to be left out of ‘all that’s new’, introducing the first

1234 Dinner’s Served event at Telephone Box Junction (TBJ), with 22 guests din-ing in comfort.

Also new to Stirling this season was the over-snow transport service offered by Stirling Expe-rience’s new Snow-Rider, with ‘lifts’ to the snow-line rather than skiers and boarders having to hike their way to the top.

Competitions have been fantastic this season and this last week some 5700 students from more than 150 Victorian schools com-peted in the interschools in near perfect conditions.

The Minister for Edu-cation, Martin Dixon, of-ficially opened what is the largest school snows-ports event in the Southern Hemisphere.

And there is more to come – school holidays are just around the corner and there is still plenty of skiing, snowboarding and snowplay available for all ages.

The second Peak Pics and Short Film Festival is to be held on September 15 and as the season gets closer to the finale there are great deals to be taken advantage of.

For more information on snow conditions, further events and top deals go to www.mtbuller.com.au.

Skiers light up Mt Buller for leukaemia

A SPECIAL event was held at Mt Buller last Saturday to raise money and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation.

“Light the Night” was an in-spiring twilight walk - or in this case a night ski - where family and friends carried lanterns to support the cause.

The twilight ski saw more than 400 locals and vistiors to the mountain ski while hold-ing colored lanterns to raise awareness and funds for the foundation’s search for a cure.

Gold lanterns represented a loved one who had passed from

the disease, white reflected on time spent with blood cancer or a loved one who survived; and blue was to show support.

More than 50,000 Austral-ian families face the challenges of leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma every day and every 46 minutes, another person is diagnosed.

Buller Ski Lifts supported the event, providing lift access for the “Light the Night” ski-ers, with many mountain staff including ski instructors, lift operations crew and ski patrol getting involved.

GEORGE Aivatoglou had a special reason to celebrate Father’s Day this year.

Of ‘George’s Ski Hire’ fame, George celebrated the day with a visit from his latest grandchild, Zoe.

Although still in the height of the snow season, George and family took some time out to celebrate this special day.

George has also celebrated his 50 years on the mountain all season - and with good reason too, as 50 years is

quite a milestone for one business operator to be in the same place and still going strong.

George’s friendly face has been a welcome sight to many return guests at Mt Buller, who have come to know ‘George’ over the years.

Libby Phillips, Director

NAME: Greg BellCAFÉ: Cattleman’s

POSITION: Head ChefGREG Bell has just returned

from a short break back to his homeland – England – and in his second season on Mt Buller, he is loving it.

Completing his chef train-ing in England, Greg moved around the Midlands mainly and after qualifying moved across to the other side of the world to broaden his experience and cuisine culture - all the way to New Zealand.

It was after the Christchurch

earthquake that Greg decided it was time to move on and having been in New Zealand for two years near neighbor Australia was the natural choice.

He fi rst came to Melbourne with his partner Christina and was sponsored with his move.

Christina is also a chef but at present is working on Buller as a housekeeper.

Greg’s favorite cuisine is seafood and with a revamp of the Cattleman’s menu has intro-duced Wednesday night ‘seafood specials’.

Among the specialties are

Sydney rock oysters, king prawns from the Sunshine Coast and fresh barramundi.

“Fresh fi sh, fresh ideas and a fresh menu are what I aimed for and got,” Greg said.

“We used to have ‘mussel Mondays’ with mussel being the specialty, but now we have Wednesday nights with lots of fresh sea foods and it is going really well.

“One of the main dishes is a seafood platter which feeds more than one, but is superb.

“Of course diners can also order other menu items if they

are not seafood lovers.“It’s what we call ‘chef’s

night’.”Greg is assisted in the kitchen

by two other chefs Andy Gosden and Sammy Rawlinson, along with a great staff of front of house.

Open all year round Cattle-man’s caters for not only evening dinners, but from the start of the day with breakfast right through the whole day with snacks, hot drinks, scrumptious lunches and much more.

Cattleman’s is found at the top of the stairs in the Village Square.

MURRAY ‘Muzza’ Bartram swapped the Paralympics for a life-time trip to Alaska.

Imagine this - you are in a heli-copter in Alaska, about to drop into a run that is steeper than anything you have ever skied before.

What do you think about? You make sure you don’t drop

a glove.For Murray, a three week fre-

eride trip to Alaska was more than just an amazing heli-skiing holiday.

“Alaska was my Paralympics,” the 23-year-old Sydney sider, who freerides Mt Buller, said.

He was referring to the trip he had planned for more than 12 months.

Murray was born with cerebral palsy.

His parents never wanted any special treatment for their boy at school.

“I didn’t even know I had a disability, just that I was different,” Muzza said, seeming glad that his parents made this decision in order to allow him a normal life.

“My parents told the teacher in kindy to just let me pick myself up when I fell over lots.”

“They knew my disability had nothing to do with the brain, it was only the physical part.”

It was not until the age of 14, when Murray started with soccer that he found out more about his condition.

“Soccer was my introduction to disabled sports,” he said.

“I learned about my disability and my abilities as well.”

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a non-contagious motor condi-tion affecting parts of the brain, causing movement impairments

IT is nearing the end of the season, which is hard to believe, so in that theme maybe a little reflection on days at Buller to finish it off.

As you know I have been here for a wee while, so there must be some things that make me keep coming back.

It is the friendships that I have made that are both precious and priceless, the opportunities I have gained from ending up here that keep evolving, and the smiles I get from re-living Buller memories that are endless.

But to add to this these are some of my favorite Buller things.

Shank night at the Duck with friends, Springtime Summit sessions, sunny afternoons on the Chalet balcony, pow days when the whole mountain is open, end of season Kooroora parties, Danni’s cocktails at the Snow Pony, Tuesday nights at the Whitt with Patty, spring time snowboarding with friends, chicken burgers and long lunches at Tirol.

Finally, I love hearing everyone’s plans for the summer.

Whether it is summer plans or winter plans it’s exciting to hear where new and old friends are heading and whether our paths will cross.

If you follow the snow anywhere in the world you will meet someone that knows someone from Buller, or run into someone you know from Buller in the most random place.

It’s the Alpine connection as the noble one, Nick Reeves, calls it.

As lots of us are travel junkies we end up in similar places to follow similar passions.

Then end up in the same places to unwind and warm up.

I also love coming back every year to Buller to find familiar faces all fresh and full of stories from the summer, ready to do it all again.

For now that’s amore, thanks for listening to me.

SKIING BULLER: Rachel (Ratty) Sheidow returned home from New Zealand and loved the fresh snow awaiting her on Mt Buller’s higher slopes.

Ratty reflects on the season so far

A trip of a lifetime for freerider in Alaska

JUST BRILLIANT: Murray Bartram went on a three week freeride trip to Alaska and it was more than an amazing heli-skiing holiday.

By ALEXANDRA GALLER

such as spasticity.Keeping fit and playing soccer

with kids that were like him made Murray appreciate sport activities.

When Murray started skiing at 16 and became more involved in competitive disabled sports, his CP would cause a very different reac-tion within the racing community.

Still a teenager, Murray trained for three months in Canada and competed in his first races with great success, taking home five medals.

“That’s when the controversy started,” Murray said.

“I did so well in my first season that people said ‘hang on a second, is this guy even disabled?’.”

The decision was made that Murray did not classify as a disa-bled sports person for the Para-lympics.

He got on board with sponsor

Liberty Skis through working in the ski industry and is enjoying bombing around the mountain.

He prefers freeriding to race training any day of the winter.

“To most of the guys at the top level, skiing has become a job.

“I didn’t wanna be like that - I love skiing.”

Murray and Liberty seem like the perfect match, they were both looking for a different angle to the competitive nature of skiing.

“A lot of people with disabilities are told they are not capable of do-ing things, and I hate that,” he said.

“But it’s not that they can’t do it. “They’ve been told they can’t

do it. How crazy is that?“With Liberty, I can do what

I enjoy and don’t get told that I can’t do something,” the bubbly red head, whose big goal was to get to Alaska, said.

When Murray started to plan his heli-skiing trip, Liberty supplied the suitable planks.

And was it worth giving up the opportunity to go to the Para-lympics?

“Skiing Alaska – are you kid-ding me?” he said.

“In my view that was so much better than going to the Paralym-pics.”

After having achieved so much at quite a young age, what else is there to look forward to in a young man’s life?

“I wanna get more into touring, you know, going back country and getting some fresh stuff, away from the masses,” he said.

“I also want to get more in-volved with Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA), hang out with kids who have CP or other dis-abilities, and do some guiding.”

SNOW SISTERS: Anja and Ava Bartels are two little girls who have thrived on the snow runs all their lives and just love getting out to ski. Anja (right) says the snow is pretty and good and she likes her skiing with the Koala School lessons through BSL, which she has done since she was two years old – now at only four.

THE Buller Knights held their annual fundraising party at ABOM’s Moosehead Bar recently, raising more than $20,000 for Interplast.

Interplast is a charity organisation that helps children with hair lips and cleft palletes with surgery to correct their condition.

The money raised this year will be used to send a mission of specialist surgeons to Papua New Guinea.

Some 10 specialists make up the Buller Knights, who each year raise funds to send doctors

to third world countries to help with the plight of children.

This year the fundraiser was also in memory of former member Simon Bernard, who died last year.

Mr Bernard was a plastic surgeon so in line with his work the funds will go to Interplast.

The theme for this year’s big bash party was ‘Wild, Wild West’ with the Moosehead being adorned with appropriate decorations.

“It was an incredibly good night with more than 200 attending the evening, not only raising money for Interplast, but also in memory of Simon,” Buller Knight, Tony Oates, said.

Imagine ….. Bella Venezia andskiing in the majestic Dolomites “We travelled from Australia to ski the Dolomites with Dolomiti.com.au. Their advice from the early planning stages right through to guiding us around the Dolomites was exceptional. Our guides - Francesco, Greg and Deb - advised us on all aspects of our tour, including accommodation, restaurants, ski hire, medical services, shopping, and nightlife and of course guiding us around the magnificent mountains. Their suggestions of side trips such as a night at the Rifugio Lagazuoi became highlights of the trip. I would have no hesitation recommending anyone who wishes to ski in Italy to speak to Dolimiti.com.au to plan and guide their trip.”

MT BULLER is gearing up for what is set to be a sensation-al spring, with a jam-packed event calendar and plenty of snow on the ground making for ideal conditions for fun and festivities.

September sees a huge range of events on the calendar, with the James Boag ABOM Mogul Challenge and Urban Pro ski events, Taste of Buller food and wine festival, the fun of 80s Day, as well as the gala night of the Peak Pics Photo Competition and Mt Buller Short Film Festival all happen-ing throughout the month.

The festivities kicked off on September 1 with a world class field of mogul skiers hitting the course on the Chamois ski run for the 24th annual James Boag ABOM Mogul Challenge.

This Saturday will see the return of the Urban Pro, where Australia’s best junior slope-style skiers will tackle a spe-cially built course in the heart of the village.

Foodies will be in heaven when the Taste of Buller food and wine festival celebrations commence today, with a pro-gram of events and special offers designed to highlight Mt Buller’s wide range of culinary experiences over a two week period.

tain will be raided for relics from the days of fluoro one-pieces, headbands and sun-glasses as staff and guests gear up for a fantastic day both on and off the slopes.

This year there is even more happening around the moun-

tain, with a DJ at Koflers spin-ning 80s tunes, a world record attempt for the most amount of one-piece ski suits in one place, and of course the 80s Apres Party where there’ll be a DJ, prizes for the best dressed and more.

Saturday, September 15 will see the gala night of the

Mt Buller Short Film Festival screening in the Mt Buller Cinema, where the finalists of the Peak Pics Photographic Competition will also be on display.

A selection of finalist films will be chosen by the expert judging panel and winners an-nounced.

Marketing and communica-tions manager for Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management, Tracey Barnes, is looking for-ward to spring on top of the world.

“There is so much going on at Mt Buller during September, with events to keep everyone entertained, as well as great accommodation deals that even include free accommodation and lift passes for children.

“Visitors to Mt Buller dur-ing spring will be spoilt for choice, with the opportunity to check out top class skiers, indulge in a culinary adven-ture, bust out the retro skiwear and take in the amazing films and photographs of the Photo Competition and Short Film Festival.

“And with some sunny days and mild temperatures thrown in, we really will be on top of the world here at Mt Buller.”

Mt Buller currently has up to 149cm of snow in manmade areas, with recent and fore-casted snowfalls setting up the resort for excellent spring skiing.

Spring is full of accommo-dation deals, with promotions such as Kids Ski and Stay Free in Spring giving families the ideal opportunity to visit, with up to two kids receiving free accommodation and lift tickets for five day stays.

A NEW book launched in Sydney this week by Zali Steggall looks set to cause a stir among Australian skiers and historians.

Ripples are likely to be felt as far away as the Swiss headquarters of the International Ski Federation with new evidence of skiing history.

‘Australian Skiing: The First 100 Years’, by Melbourne journalist Wendy Cross, strongly challenges the claim made last year by Sydney writer Norman W Clarke that the Kiandra Pioneer Ski Club, originally known as the Kiandra Snow Shoe Club, is the world’s oldest ski club.

The claim was heavily promoted by Snow Australia, the Internet marketing face of Australian ski resort operators, during celebrations last year

marking the 150th anniversary of the first recorded skiing in this country, at Kiandra in 1861.

However, Wendy Cross’s new book casts serious doubt on Clarke’s assertion that the Kiandra Snow Shoe Club was also formed in 1861, by Norwegian-born gold-miners.

“There is no question that 1861 was the year in which the first known references to skiing in Australia were published in several newspapers,” Cross said.

“However, there is no evidence at all that a ski club existed at that time and it is more likely that another 20 years went by before the Kiandra Snow Shoe Club was formed.”

‘Australian Skiing: The First 100 Years’ is published by Walla Walla Press of Sydney.

New book debunks ‘world first’ ski claim

Break out in 80s style

Dolomite Mountains the place for Aussie summer

In brief

THIS Saturday Mt Buller celebrates all things 80s with a fun-filled Eighties Day.

Bust out your tightest and brightest ski gear and enjoy the world’s most colorful decade’s fashion and fun.

For one ultra-cheesy day only, resort visitors, staff and residents will dust off their fluoro ski outfits and hit the slopes in style, making the most of the fantastic spring weather.

Koflers Hutte will be holding an 80s DJ from 1pm-3pm and at 2pm a world record attempt will be under way for the ‘Most One Piece Ski Suits in One Place’.

Dress in your finest retro outfits and head down to Apres at the Mt Buller Chalet for the ‘official ‘80s Day Party’ from 4pm-7pm.

After 9pm the Kooroora Hotel will hold the 80s ‘dance off’.

THE Dolomites of northern Italy offer the world’s largest lift-served ski region and when Mt Buller’s ski season is ended why not head there.

Italy offers unique appeal among European countries.

I t ’s an enormous, modern network of 450 ski lifts, 45 resorts, 12 valley communities and 1220km of groomed trails.

This year there will be new lifts, including chairs, gondolas and ca-ble cars.

And all this is avail-able on one lift pass, the Dolomiti Superski Pass, for just $A40–$54 a day.

Loca ted nea r t he Austrian-Italian border, the imposing Dolomite Mountains present a su-perb blend of skiing, culture and scenery — everything you expect in a European ski holiday.

The infrastructure and amenities are as sophisti-cated as anywhere in the world, yet somehow this special pocket of Europe has lost none of its vil-lage charms and age-old traditions.

“Some of the better-known resorts in the re-gion include Cortina, Corvara, Val Gardena, La Villa, Arabba and our own base in the Fassa Valley, the village of Campitello,” Dolomites Sk i Tours manager, Mario Longhitano, said.

Campitello is a classic mountain ski village in a

delightful location. It offers traditional at-

mosphere, modern com-forts and access to a host of local valley facilities.

Each day Dolomites Ski Tours’ Mario Long-hitano and his team take Australian skiers off to explore new mountains and ski areas.

Sydney based and operating for 27 years, Dolomites Ski Tours are the only true specialists for skiing in Italy, and particularly the spectacu-lar Dolomite Mountains.

Their expert resort hosts know where to find the best snow and condi-tions in any weather – be it the sun-filled glacier runs of the Marmolada, the sanctuary of Vigo’s tree-lined slopes or the winding, 5km trails down Lupo Bianco…not to mention the open faces of Col Rodella or the eye-watering ‘scream’ down Ciampac’s g roomed downhill.

“Bu t pe rhaps the greatest skiing is offered around the famous Sella Ronda route,” Mario said.

“Together we ski any-thing from 45–75km in a day without catching the same lift twice.

“And in the process we complete a circuit around the towering Sella Group of mountains in the heart of the Dolo-mites.

“Best of all, it’s open to any strong intermedi-ate.

“This blend of moun-

MAJESTIC HEIGHTS: Skiing the Dolomites, Italy has a splendor all its own.

tains, snow, culture, shopping and irresistible food makes the Dolo-mites experience a truly memorable one.

“In fact, it’s a great time to ski Italy because the $A–Euro exchange rate offers excellent value for Australian skiers.”

Discover the world’s most outstanding ski re-gion and join Mario and his team for an adventure in ‘The Dolomites’.

Spring is in the alpine air

IF last weekend is any indication it looks like we are in for some great spring skiing.

The sun was out, the snow was brilliant and fun was had by all.

Mt Buller has some great deals available so it’s the perfect time to bring the family up and enjoy some great skiing and sun.

To get optimum skiing conditions the key is to get out there early and finish early - this is when the snow is at its best.

Sitting outside at Kofler’s for lunch is a must, then after your big day a massage or even some beverages watching the footy finals will cap off a fantastic day.

There are a few things you can do equipment wise to get better performance in these conditions.

A warmer wax and

a coarser structure can be applied to the base of your skis or snowboards to help them glide better.

This helps to prevent the suction effect due to very wet snow.

Darker tint or mirrored goggles or sunglasses with solid tint lenses are essential as the sun is a lot stronger at this time of the year.

You may not need to wear as many layers.

A soft shell jacket will offer great wind protection, while not being too warm.

Sunscreen is best applied several times well before you head out and should be re-applied throughout the day.

Most importantly ski/ride in control and respect everyone around you.

GET OUT EARLY: with spring sunshine and plenty of snow on the ground, the advice is ‘get out early, ski early and dress sensibly’.

IT’S not everyday a girl gets proposed to.For Amy Mullen Mt Buller was ‘the

special place and special time’ chosen by her partner Daniel Jurczyszyn to propose marriage.

Daniel is an ex part time Mt Buller ski instructor, who did seven seasons between 2001 and 2007.

“On the morning of September 1, I headed up Grimus chair and convinced Amy to head towards McLauglins Shoulder where we needed to climb in our skis to get to the top peak,” Daniel told Buller News.

“As we get to the top I tell Amy that I have something wrong with my skis and that I need to de-ski and check the bases.

“As I take my skis off, Amy turns away and looks at the amazing view.

“As she looks away I put my skis down, get down on both knees behind her tap her on her back so she turns around and I asked her ‘Amy Mullen will you marry me?’.

“She responds, ‘are you serious’...then yells ‘yes’.

“It was a surreal moment.“We both love our skiing and being up on

the mountains most weekends. “So proposing on top of Mt Buller was

just us to a T. “We are also members of CSIR Ski Club

and Lodge up at Buller.”As far as Mt Buller News knows this is the

second public proposal to take place on Mt Buller this season - do you know of anymore - email [email protected].

MT BULLER skiers and boarders are on a high after celebrating epic snow conditions and the best weekend of the season.

A recent dump of fresh dry powder snow saw all 22 lifts rolling for the biggest weekend of the winter and heralding in spring.

“This last weekend was the

best skiing of the winter so far and possibly in memory for many Mt Buller skiers and boarders,” Laurie Blampied, general manager of Buller Ski Lifts, said.

“We have the largest network of lifts in Victoria and every one moved skiers and boarders to make the most of this superb fresh snow cover.

“More than 20cm of snow fell in two days and these are conditions skiers dream about.”

Mt Buller also announced specially discounted spring deals including a Three Day Any Day pass available online that sees adults skiing at regular child prices at just $59 a day.

The arrival of September also

coincided with the beginning of great spring offers, including Kids Ski and Stay Free at many accommodation houses.

“This is the perfect storm for snow enthusiasts,” Anthony O’Shea, marketing manager for Buller Ski Lifts, said.

“These spring discounts all kicked in just as the best

conditions of the season arrived. “Traditionally people assume

August is peak season but this year September is going to be the time to get up to the mountain.

“We’ve got some incredible deals and the best skiing conditions I’ve experienced in Australia in a long time to go with them.”

The chalet features a parent re-treat on the top level and a second master bedroom - both with great views.

The living area includes high ceilings and large expanses of glass offering dream views.

There are Mt Buller summer schools teaching cooking, pho-tography and other activities to be announced.

There is the annual Targa High Country car challenge on November 9 to 11 and of course the national and international biking events on Buller have grown with record numbers recorded on the mountain last summer.

Or for those who are a little more conservative – just go bush walking along the many tracks or get away from the heat of the city to the cooler climate of the mountains on those 40 degree plus days.

Whatever reason you need to get away make Mt Buller and the Cha-lets your home away from home.

MAGNIFICENT LOCATION: Glory View Chalet offers magnificent views over the mountain.
