Mise en scene

Everybody turns their heads upwards to see what has happened

Contrast- white men’s shirts lightened in the dark

There is a woman singing and performing, and it seems like she is introducing herself to the characters; lights on…

Everybody is waving, trying to catch her, propose her money, diamonds

She is playing with them, because she actually is not going to accept such presents

At the end the conversation between the Moulin Rouge’s owner and the Duke starts

Location: a kind of a “night club” for rich gentlemen

Costumes: visitors in formal clothing, performers are in colourful dresses with lots of make-up (red lips)

The main colour is red - passion, love, madness

Camera

Music stops and cuts to everybody’s faces looking upwards: main characters and the public are shown (high angle shot means that she owned their attention). Makes us interested in who is going to come out next

Close-up of the woman singing (silence in the background). Her face is lightened in the darkness. The main characters look shocked and fascinated

High angle shot of the men (the main characters and the public)- means that they were being “cut down” by the her beauty

Wide shots with high angle- to show how many people came to Moulin Rouge

Editing

From “everybody-looking-upwards” shot the director cuts to a woman’s face

Scene of the two groups of men looking interested in her in one shot, but they are divided by the wall- means that there is a contest for a woman, kind of conflict between them. Then a cut to only two men

Someone typed ‘The Duke’ and it dissolves- means that a man who was shown afterwards is a Duke (introducing a new character)

Cuts to the men’s faces: one by one, to show their impression of her performance

The other women singing are shown when there appear to be many voices in the song, they are also taking part in the performance

The shot of Satine (with diamonds) with the men surrounding her

Sound

Firstly, it is a loud fast music, but then it immediately stops

Silence with a kind of “misty and sparkling” sound

We can hear only singer’s voice

The song suits the character “Sparkling diamonds” and “Material girl”

The other women are also singing, but mostly it is a solo
