The E44 Motorway links Dubai to Oman passing

alongside the Dubai Creek development and the Ras

Al Khor bird sanctuary. Junction 24/25 at the edge of

the Creek and bird sanctuary was completed in 2006,

connecting to the D62 as one of a number of major

interchanges.

Challenge

The main flyover of the D62 formed part of the clover leaf

junction and was required to provide both a stable and

efficient structural solution to the elevated junction as well

as providing an aesthetic solution supporting vegetation.

The curved profile of the flyover whilst aesthetically

pleasing posed the usual problems for more rigid concrete

solutions needing curved forms and liners slowing

construction and increasing cost.

Solution

• EnkaGrid PRO reinforcement provided a stable solution

for the reinforced soil walls supporting the embankment

• EnkaGrid’s rigid polyester strips ensured low creep

elongation and good interlock with the sand fill

• Versa-Lok modular blockwork provided an easy solution

to the curved face finish

• Sandstone coloured split face blocks blended

seamlessly with the environment

• 4 tiered construction allowed for mid tier planting bays to

further blend the finished junction into the environment.

Benefits of the solution

Reinforced soils are internally stabilised relying on the self

weight of the fill material to generate tensile forces in the

reinforcement which resist the lateral movement of the

soil. This enables construction with site won fill materials

and with need for minimal facing which can be easily

achieved with light weight modular blocks removing the

need for on site concrete casting.

Reinforced soil walls can be built within their own footprint

with no need for external props or falsework making it

possible to construct with minimum disruption to traffic on

adjacent roads and allowing sites to progress more

quickly.

Installation benefits

The modular blocks are unreinforced dry pressed concrete

whilst the reinforcing grids are polymeric so no special

needs such as sealing on the back of concrete walls or

panels are required to resist corrosion even in saline and

chloride rich soil environments. The modular nature of the

blocks facilitates smooth curves and berms in the

construction without the need for special untis or forms

and enables rapid construction rates as no mortar is

required.

Result

The combination of modular blocks and tiered planting

bays adjacent to EnkaGrid reinforced soil produces a rich

aesthetically pleasing solution to an engineering problem.

Versa-Lok modular blocks are easily placed by hand and are dry laid enabling rapid rates of construction

Products used

EnkaGrid PRO 60 EnkaGrid PRO is a uniaxial high strength laser-welded geogrid for reinforcement

Split faced sandstone finish to blocks gives a warm natural aesthetic

The modular units cope well with even tight radius curves with no need for special units

Frictional connection with the EnkaGrid PRO reinforcement and block facing

Planting bays blend the finished walls in with the landscaped surroundings
