Partner of Choice

Stronger, deeper relationships will lead, in many cases, to more

collaboration and creative partnerships.

Executive Chairman and Managing Director

Ben Keswick

Ben Keswick

Providing clarity on our purpose, and the strategy charting our way forward was one of my main objectives when I addressed senior managers at the Strategic Direction meeting in March.

As usual however, I opened with a review of the 2018 results which saw revenue (US$43 billion), underlying profit (US$1.7 billion), and earnings per share (US$4.53) all grow by 10% from 2017 to deliver a second consecutive year of solid growth. More information about the results and our future strategy is detailed in The Pulse section of this issue.

To deliver on the strategy of building growth in core markets by targeting opportunities arising from the growing middle-class populations in the region, we will focus harder on several areas, especially relationships and what we need to do to continue to be the partner of choice in Asia.

Finding new ways to add tangible value to our existing, and prospective new partners is critical and the recent announcement of a Virtual Bank joint venture (JV) between Bank of China Hong Kong, JD Digits, and ourselves, is a good example of this. You can read more about this milestone JV, what a Virtual Bank offers customers, and what each party brings to the table, in this edition of Thistle.

Stronger, deeper relationships will lead, in many cases, to more collaboration and creative partnerships. This is another area we will strive to be more proactive in, whether with external players or internally across our businesses.

The recent formation of Jardine International Motors (JIM) is an internal collaboration move that combines the experience, expertise and economies of scale of our Jardine Cycle & Carriage and Zung Fu Motors Group businesses. JIM aims to get closer to customers, enhance efficiencies and enable our auto business to be better placed to take on the disruptive technologies impacting the sector; and Ben Birks, who is leading JIM, talks more about these in The Pulse section.

Home-grown innovation, especially digital solutions developed by our businesses and Innovate Jardines, are also profiled in the Perspective section. These advances, and many others covered in this issue, are forged on greater collaboration and co-operation; new ways of working; and being more outward-focused; and I look forward to showcasing more success stories in these respective areas in future issues.

Growth Strategy Mapped Out at Strategic Direction

“Our strategy is to deliver growth through market-leading businesses in our core markets built around opportunities arising from Asia’s growing and increasingly prosperous middle class.”

This clear articulation of the Group growth strategy was one of the key messages delivered by Jardines Executive Chairman and Managing Director Ben Keswick in his speech at the Strategic Direction 2019 event in Hong Kong in March.

Expanding on this, he also outlined the Group’s target growth rate in the near-future: “If we want to be perceived as a growth stock, we need to deliver an annualised growth rate of at least 5% to 7% over the medium term.”

Asia is Our Backyard

In terms of focus markets Mr Keswick said, “Our growth prospects today, and in the future, are tied to Greater China and Southeast Asia – this is our backyard, it’s where we have an advantage. In short, we believe strongly in the future of Asia’s middle classes.”

China’s middle-class opportunity is significant – the 400 million middle-class citizens throughout the country today represent less than one-third of the total population. And Southeast Asia’s middle class is estimated to become two-thirds of its overall population by 2030.

Mr Keswick said the Group’s traditional strengths – its reputation, diversity, and deep market knowledge in Asia – mixed with a stronger can-do, entrepreneurial spirit across all Group businesses offers a unique combination to drive growth in the region. Delivering on strategy, he highlighted three areas to focus harder on: relationships, speed, and people.

Bolstering Relationships

Regarding relationships, he said, “Our reputation opens doors in many markets across Asia so let’s work hard to ensure that we continue to be the partner of choice – adding tangible value – for a broader range of prospective partners.

“It is also important to work harder to make friends, and influence others at all levels – whether it’s customers, competitors, governments, tech companies, start-ups, OEMs, suppliers, leading entrepreneurs or Asian families – to show them that we are open to talking, open for business, and open to exchanging strengths to help each other grow.”

Driving a Momentum Shift

To position the Group for expansion in this ‘Asian Century’ – the century in which Asian economies are predicted to drive global growth – Mr Keswick called for a momentum shift across all businesses.

Ben Keswick reviewed Group results and shared future strategy and other insights.

“We must improve our agility, speed, and ability to seek new opportunities in both the bricks-and-mortar and digital worlds. Some of you will have noticed that I didn’t say first mover because there’s nothing wrong with being a fast follower – history shows that the second company often improves the original idea to enjoy the greatest success. The iPhone is a great example of this.”

People

A strong and vibrant internal culture was the third growth pillar highlighted by Mr Keswick.

“Our people live and drive our culture every day. They are a critical element of our business, and we, as a Group, must increase our focus on the importance, and the needs of our people.

“We need to invest more in training. There’s a tendency to think of training and reskilling as mostly for younger, or mid-level employees, but technology is forcing everyone – myself included – to take lifelong learning very seriously.

“Training is an area where the Group can add value in an impactful way – especially our talent and leadership programmes which are relevant for all businesses.”

The Group enjoyed a solid year and performed well with a 10% rise in revenue, underlying profit, and earnings per share.

Astra produced strong numbers especially in its heavy equipment and mining businesses. Hongkong Land also performed well with encouraging results from its property development activities.

Jardine Cycle & Carriage produced better results in 2018 from both its Direct Motor Interests and its other regional Strategic Interests, including the first full year of dividend contribution from Vinamilk in Vietnam.

Dairy Farm delivered impressive results in Health and Beauty and Maxim’s, while IKEA and its convenience stores progressed well, but there was continued weakness in its Food business. It booked a significant charge for the restructuring of its supermarket and hypermarket businesses across Southeast Asia. A multi-year business transformation programme is now underway addressing various aspects of Dairy Farm’s businesses.

Jardine Pacific, with its diverse group of pan-Asian businesses – with strengths in construction and engineering – continued to make an important direct contribution to Jardines.

Mandarin Oriental had a successful year in Hong Kong, and there is a growing momentum in both new hotel openings and a pipeline of future hotels around the world.

Profit by Geographies

Greater China’s contribution to underlying profit represented 56% of the Group total and Hong Kong remained the single largest contributor to the Group’s profit. Group businesses across Southeast Asia meanwhile, produced strong results to account for 40% of the Group’s total.

The Pulse

Jardine International Motors Pools Auto Expertise, Experience and ScaleSeeking fresh ways to address some of the major disruption challenges facing the motoring sector today is one of the main aims of the recently launched Jardine International Motors (JIM).

Headed by Benjamin Birks, Chief Executive of JIM and Zung Fu, JIM brings together some of the brightest senior talent from Jardine Cycle & Carriage (JC&C) and Zung Fu Motors Group. Aligning strategy, sharing innovation, combining data intelligence, streamlining operations, and strengthening partnerships to present a unified voice to more than half a million customers in the region are some of the key objectives for the JIM team.

A Bold and Right Step Forward

“JIM will bring together the expertise and economies of scale currently spread across JC&C and Zung Fu Motors Group. The unified group will be one central resource that will benefit all of Jardines’ businesses, its customers, partners and staff. It is a revolution from a structural point of view, and a bold but right step forward,” said Mr Birks.

“De-duplicating of current processes to improve efficiency is another goal. A more streamlined approach also enables us to be better placed to stay ahead of fast-changing auto sector trends, and customer demands,” added Mr Birks.

“With half a million customers’ changing behaviour and their needs to bear in mind, plus the current upheaval in the automotive market which we refer to as S.C.A.R.E.D – Shared, Connected, Autonomous, Regulation, Electric, Demographics – we are very aware that we need to focus our strategy and scale up to meet this demand,” said Mr Birks.

Scaling Up

Scaling is another important focus, and combining resources and expertise enables JIM to be well-positioned to take full advantage of future opportunities presented by disruptive technologies and new customer expectations.

“Having a greater ability to scale up will allow us to try new online and offline sales mechanisms which will enable us to better focus on each of our markets,” said Mr Birks.

Elaborating on this, he said, “We will now be able to trial, focus and grow new strategies in one area before rolling it out to a wider group.”

The group’s unified strategy will speak in a single, coherent voice to more effectively address the needs of customers, and shareholders, and will be adapted for local execution.

A bigger business group also ensures that JIM can focus more on research and development. In terms of people, the new group will also present more employment opportunities, for both current as well as new staff.

Presenting a united voice to more than half a million customers is one of the key objectives for the JIM team, said Mr Birks.

Earlier this year, a Bank of China Hong Kong (BOCHK), JD Digits, and Jardines joint venture (JV) known as Livi VB Limited (livi) was granted one of the first licences to launch a virtual bank in Hong Kong.

The granting of the licence by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority underscores the government’s desire to introduce a new era of smart banking in the city. Using the latest technology, livi will deliver a simple, seamless and secure banking experience that complements the everyday lives of consumers and the business operations of SMEs.

Jardines Executive Chairman and Managing Director Ben Keswick said, “This joint venture is a great

Excelsior Hotel Veterans Bring in the New Year Samuel Wai Wing Lau, a long-serving staff member at Hong Kong’s Excelsior Hotel, had the honour of firing the Jardines’ Midnight Gun on New Year’s Eve. He was joined by Glora King Sim Chung, the hotel’s longest-serving employee; Torsten Van Dullemen, General Manager and Area Vice President, Operations of The Excelsior and Mr Van Dullemen’s wife, Paola Van Dullemen.

Mr Lau began his Excelsior career as a barman at the hotel’s well-known Dickens Bar in 1989 before moving to new roles over the next 30 years. A first runner-up placing at the 1993 Beefeater Cocktail Competition – for his signature ‘Juniper Bouquet’ cocktail – and representing Hong Kong at the 1993 World Cocktail Championship in Austria are some of Mr Lau’s career highlights.

Ms Chung meanwhile, joined the hotel in 1979, and she currently serves as Mandarin Oriental’s (MO) Cultural Exchange Ambassador, where she coaches new colleagues and supports pre-openings of new MO hotels. Established in 1973, the iconic Excelsior Hotel closed in late March for redevelopment; the hotel will be replaced by a mixed-use commercial building that is set to open in 2025.

example of how we can realise our strategic aim of being a partner of choice in Asia and it demonstrates our ability to use our scale and expertise to offer more for our partners: our customer network in Hong Kong complements the financial services expertise and digital capabilities of our partners.”

“Our involvement also reflects our desire to increase our agility and seek new opportunities in the digital world. It shows that we are willing to adapt our offering to meet the changing needs of our customers as they become more digitally-savvy and I hope that Group companies will collaborate with the new virtual bank team to explore the ways in which the new bank will be able to enhance their existing customer offering.”

The virtual bank combines the strengths of each JV partner: the financial services expertise, strength and security of BOCHK; the digital technology capabilities of JD Digits, a specialist in connecting the finance industry with the real economy; and the extensive consumer footprint across Hong Kong offered by the Jardines retail network. The initial funding for the virtual bank is HK$2.5 billion (US$319 million) with an ownership split of 44%, 36% and 20% respectively.

Home-Grown Innovation is Making a Difference

Fifth right: Innovate Jardines Chief Executive Officer Michael Poon and the Innovate Jardines team.

Constantly innovating and adapting to stay aligned with market trends has been one of the major growth drivers for Jardines for more than 185 years.

Meeting this challenge in the digital age is a priority for the Innovate Jardines (IJ) Chief Executive Officer, Michael Poon. In this interview, Mr Poon shares more about IJ’s areas of expertise, the support it offers to Group businesses and operations, and the opportunities and challenges ahead.

In simple terms, please describe the role of IJ and the team’s objectives.

At a high level, the role of IJ is twofold. One is to help instil a culture of innovation across our Group’s businesses. The second goal is to help drive business impact in our companies using technology or other innovation processes.

What are the skill sets of the members of the IJ team?

The background of IJ is a combination of things. We have long-term colleagues with a lot of experience working

for Jardines; we have people who have worked in start-ups and as management consultants, some in technology; and we have new Jardine Executive Trainee Scheme college grads starting out. So we have a diverse set of backgrounds and it’s a team with many talents that can help transformation.

As the team is relatively new, what were your initial focus areas; and what will be the major focus areas in 2019 and beyond?

When we started initially, we focused on building awareness of the team, and on the internal culture, which was very much around the funding of Innovation Challenges and running a lot of workshops.

In 2019 we will continue to push both the internal: the culture piece and the external: the business impact piece. We’ve carried out proof-of-concepts and trial ideas, now we want to scale it up; so it’s almost like we want to be more ambitious, taking things to the next level. We’re not really doing different things, we’re building on our success and upping our game.

Right: Innovate Jardines General Manager C K Yap introduced Jardines to over 800 start-up founders and corporate leaders during the Startup Autobahn Expo Day last year.

Looking ahead, what are some of the innovation opportunities and challenges in the near term?

We continue to have great opportunities in terms of having lots of customers and lots of centralised data, that we can use to better serve our customers and be more operationally efficient. We’ve also helped change the mindsets of people about how they execute on some of these things, to operationalise it, make it happen and scale it. In terms of challenges, I think they’re the same as they’ve always been. It’s always difficult to try new things, to do things in a way that people aren’t used to.

Finally, the December Innovation Showcase attracted many video entries – how would you rate the quality of the projects submitted, and what’s the appetite for digital transformation across Jardines’ companies?

We were really impressed by the 281 video entries received, and the 34,000 votes submitted! The number of responses and the quality of the videos was so overwhelming we had a difficult choice in narrowing it down to only six. I think it really demonstrates the strength and the desire to put in the hard work across the Group to do things better for our customers.

What have been some of the major milestones achieved so far? How does the team measure success?

It’s fair to say our milestones would be some of the ideas that we have funded that have gone on to become catalysts of much broader transformation, such as the creation of United Tractors Digital. More than 120 full-time staff are focused on digitalising the business, and more than 20 RPA (robotic process automation) projects have been kick-started across the group.

Also, following our Group-wide innovation challenges, we’ve seen the creation of innovation teams within the businesses, such as at Hongkong Land and Zung Fu, which have gone on to host their own challenges.

Awareness has really changed if we think about the mindset, openness and willingness to work with technology. We have been involved in some external partnerships like Startup Autobahn, NIO Capital and the Astra WeLab joint venture.

It was inspiring to see just how much innovative work is taking

place across the Group. It is clear that we have the passion and

enthusiasm to experiment and find new ways of delivering better

experiences for our customers.

Jardine Cycle & Carriage Celebrates 120 Years of SoutheastAsian Partnerships

Founded in 1899, Jardine Cycle & Carriage (JC&C) has grown in tandem with the development and modernisation of Southeast Asia, and is today a leading Singapore-listed company with strategic interests across the region. Besides the milestone of 120 years since its founding, 2019 also marks the 50th year since the company was first listed on the Stock Exchange of Malaysia and Singapore.

JC&C’s business interests span a diverse range of sectors including automotive, financial services, infrastructure, cement, power production, real estate and dairy, with a combined revenue of over US$40 billion in 2018. Through these business interests, JC&C continues to support the urbanisation of Southeast Asia and the emerging ASEAN middle class.

With 120 years of partnerships in Southeast Asia, JC&C Managing Director Alex Newbigging said, “Our investments are long-term and strategic in nature. They are rooted in the fundamentals of the industries we invest in and never purely based on short-term metrics alone. We have built a strong track record of investing in companies with robust financial performance, strong leadership, sound governance and long-term potential.”

Exceptional Journeys

Jointly celebrating this milestone is JC&C’s automotive brand, Cycle & Carriage, which represents 10 brands across Malaysia, Myanmar and Singapore. In conjunction with the anniversary, Cycle & Carriage unveiled its new brand promise, Exceptional Journeys, which encapsulates its passion to create people-focused experiences and underscores its commitment to serving customers, partners, employees and communities.

“Being 120 years old doesn’t make us a traditional company. We see ourselves as a brand that has understood and responded to the changing needs of people – our customers, employees and partners. We have long-serving employees who have been with us for over 40 years. We have also been a trusted partner of one of the world’s most well-known marques, Mercedes-Benz, for nearly 70 years,” said JC&C Regional Managing Director Haslam Preeston.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, Cycle & Carriage launched a customer campaign in Malaysia, Myanmar and Singapore to give away 120 exceptional journeys to enticing destinations Korea, Mongolia and Nepal (www.cyclecarriage.com/120).

Jardine Cycle & Carriage celebrates a rich history spanning over a century.

Gammon Helps Hong Kong Move Towards a Cleaner FutureAs part of Gammon’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact, it has cooperated with its client Sun Hung Kai Properties and joint venture partner, Sanfield, to decarbonise its energy consumption at the Sai Sha Road widening and associated infrastructure project site offices.

The project team installed a 45kW solar photovoltaic array to join CLP Power’s Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariff (FiT) scheme. Under this scheme, the joint venture is receiving HK$4 (US$0.50) for every kWh generated. This is the first Hong Kong construction site to sell power as part of the FiT programme, and the solar power renewable energy generation system has an estimated payback period of five years.

Faster, Cleaner Power

Gammon has also adopted an early engagement approach to enable quicker on-site electrification at four work areas in the Sai Sha Road project. Replacing diesel generators with solar power reduces exhaust fumes and greenhouse gas emissions as well as noise pollution, while also decreasing land and water contamination caused by diesel storage and filling.

These efforts tangibly demonstrate Gammon’s support for the Environment Bureau’s promotion of renewable energy and aligns with Hong Kong’s long-term decarbonisation strategy.

Menara Astra Marks the 62nd Anniversary of Astra

The inauguration of the striking Menara Astra building, and the unveiling of a statue of Astra’s founding father William Soeryadjaya, were some highlights to mark Astra’s 62nd anniversary on 20 February.

At 261 metres tall, the 63-floor Menara Astra building dominates Jakarta’s skyline. It is also a Building and Construction Authority Green Mark Platinum-certified building as it meets world-class environmental standards and boasts a 40% energy efficiency rating.

A Rich Past and Bright Future Ahead

Speaking at the inauguration event, Rini Soemarno, who was President Director of PT Astra International Tbk from 1998 to 2000, and currently serves as Indonesia’s Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, was moved to tears when the statue of William Soeryadjaya was unveiled.

She said, “I knew Oom William and his family. I joined the company in 1998 and helped him prepare the company to go public to achieve professional management. That was his goal. I was also moved because in 1998 Astra was close to being declared bankrupt, but now, seeing the company open its own building, I am emotional but also very proud of the company’s achievements.”

In his opening remarks, Lophiga Surbakti, Chairman of Ikatan Karyawan Astra International – IKASI (Astra International Employees Association) PT Astra International Tbk, said, “We should be grateful that Astra currently remains and maintains its best performance today. We are honoured to have the opportunity to grow our careers and give significant contributions to support the nation’s advancement.”

The event was also notable for the recognition of long-serving Astra staff. Employees who been with the company for 10, 20, 25 and 30 years were celebrated, as well as those retiring.

Inter-School Mental Health Knowledge Competition A SuccessKwok Tak Seng Catholic Secondary School emerged as the champion of the Inter-school Mental Health Knowledge Competition held in January.

Contested by 90 students from 10 schools, the student advocates were asked questions related to mental health information covered in prior programme workshops. The advocates were also asked to develop a slogan to promote better understanding and acceptance of people with mental illness. A number of mini sports games were also run. The competition – an initiative under the broad Health in Mind programme – was held at CCC Kei Chun Primary School in Kwai Chung, Hong Kong.

Students shared creative ideas on promoting mental health through group discussion.

On the Up and Up – Strong Support for the 2018 Challenge & CarnivalMINDSET Care Limited, the registered charity of the Jardine Matheson Group in Singapore, successfully raised S$397,000 (US$291,500) for mental health at the MINDSET Challenge & Carnival 2018. Held at the Marina Bay Financial Centre, Tower 1 in late October, this annual vertical race and carnival is MINDSET’s signature event to raise funds and awareness for mental health.

The event attracted 280 race participants and 2,200 carnival-goers, including 250 mental health persons-in-recovery (PIRs) and caregivers from voluntary welfare organisations. For the first time, 30 PIRs and caregivers participated in the vertical race, climbing five floors to the top of the tower to further reinforce MINDSET’s commitment to promote inclusivity and diversity.

The funds will be used to support the MINDSET Learning Hub (MLH), Singapore’s first and only training and job placement centre that provides Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) and non-WSQ training for PIRs. Launched in October 2016 in partnership with the Singapore Association for Mental Health, MLH has since trained 306 persons and successfully placed 170 individuals in the workforce.

MINDSET Singapore Chairman Alex Newbigging said, “We believe that everyone should be given his or her opportunity in society. At Jardines, we have been

providing job opportunities for mental health PIRs within our 19 businesses in Singapore. Since 2011, we have placed over 160 PIRs in jobs within the Group. We have also donated over S$5.7 million (US$4.2 million) towards various mental health programmes. We hope that more firms will support inclusivity and the integration of mental health PIRs in the workplace.”

Jardine Aviation Academy – Flying HighAs part of its efforts to share best practices and improve industry standards, the Jardine Aviation Academy (JAA) recently hosted two Yunnan Airport Group delegations.

JAA partnered with Hong Kong International Aviation Academy to run an eight-week training programme for the Yunnan Airport Group delegates. Training topics covered safety, marketing, quality assurance, risk management and more. Upon completion of the programme, participants gained many new technical skills and insights that they will put into practice in their respective workplaces.

The Teddy Love Project, a recent charity initiative run by Zung Fu with support from Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong, was successful in raising funds to purchase a new Mercedes-Benz Vito van for the New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association (NLPRA).

Funds were largely generated from sales of a limited-edition Mercedes-Benz cuddly bear, said Zung Fu Chief Executive Benjamin Birks.

“With the sale of every teddy bear from the Mercedes-Benz showrooms in Hong Kong and Macau and the Mercedes me Store, HK$100 (US$13) of the HK$300 (US$39) purchase price was contributed to acquire a brand-new Mercedes-Benz Vito van,” Mr Birks said.

Teddy Love Fundraiser Supports Mental Health Rehab Programmes in Hong Kong

The Yunnan Airport Group delegates paid a visit to the Jardine Aviation Services Group Cargo Unit to learn more about air cargo operations.

The van will be used to transport mental health patients to support their daily commutes and participate in social activities and social enterprise programmes, where they can gain the necessary skills and confidence for open employment, and community integration.

“The Teddy Love Project allows us to provide direct support to community social enterprises, and it’s encouraging to see all the opportunities it brings to the community,” said Mr Birks.

Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong President and CEO Frederik Gollob said, “The van donation is a tangible way to offer mental health patients better access to critical services and rehabilitation programmes.”

For Our Future

IKEA Hong Kong has replaced most of the single-use plastics in IKEA Restaurants and IKEA Bistros with products made from degradable materials including takeaway boxes, paper straws and wooden cutlery. A HK$1 (US$0.13) discount has also been introduced to encourage customers to bring their own food containers for takeaway meals at IKEA Restaurants. In addition, ready-to-use cleaned food containers are available.

Since the start of 2019, IKEA has also stopped providing single-use plastic bags and produce bags across all its stores in Hong Kong. This could help to save 550,000 plastic bags and 440,000 produce bags every year.

IKEA hopes to help effect a positive change to the environment and community in Hong Kong by reducing the usage of single-use plastics, to minimise the negative impact of plastic waste on the environment.

IKEA Hong Kong Country Marketing Manager Roxy Cheng said, “We understand that changing habits could be a hassle to our customers; however, we are keen to work together to establish a BYOB (bring your own bag) mindset to reduce use of single-use plastic bags in everyday life. With this in mind, we believe we can bring a positive impact to the environment and the future together.”

Turning Waste Oil into EnergyIt’s a tasty proposition: restaurants are converting used cooking oil to a source of energy. Maxim’s Group has partnered with Shell to use biodiesel produced from its used cooking oil to power its delivery fleet in Hong Kong. With an annual consumption of 396,000 litres, over 100 delivery trucks from two food production plants are currently using biodiesel as part of the company’s sustainable development.

Maxim’s Group has been committed to environmental protection through various key initiatives since 2009, including the signature Surplus Bread Donation Program, which enables volunteers to collect spare bread from its cake shops across town and donate to the needy.

Through several green initiatives, IKEA Hong Kong hopes to reduce the number of plastic and produce bags used every year, by up to 550,000 and 440,000 respectively.

Playing for Change in Indonesia The importance of child’s play was recently reinforced by IKEA Indonesia. As part of its support for the company’s global Let’s Play for Change programme, IKEA Indonesia and Save the Children Indonesia set up a play area in its store. Through the play area and interactive games, in addition to talk show programmes with various media, IKEA and Save the Children helped to raise awareness of the importance of play and its impact on child development.

In addition, for every seasonal soft toy sold during the campaign period, IKEA Indonesia donated €1 (US$1.12) to Save the Children Indonesia to support their play and education efforts for disabled children. By the end of the campaign, more than 2,600 seasonal soft toys were sold.

Astra Supports National Press DayA signing ceremony to announce the development of a sea toll road, as well as education programmes, were some of the highlights of this year’s Hari Pers Nasional (National Press Day) event in Surabaya, East Java.

Commemorating the founding of Persatuan Wartawan Indonesia (PWI), the Indonesian Journalists Association, the 2019 event was attended by President Joko Widodo. In his speech, the president

thanked national news reporters for their commitment to providing trusted, independent information in an age where fake news is published on many social media channels.

As well as the president’s address, the event was notable for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Transportation and PWI to develop a sea toll road. PWI, PT Astra International Tbk, and other private-sector companies also signed an MoU to promote education and training programmes covering industry best practices and support for disaster-impacted communities.

Graduates in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United Kingdom and Vietnam are now more aware of, and attracted to, the diverse career opportunities offered by Jardines. They were the target of a recent Jardines Employer Brand campaign – in particular, high-potential graduates eager to lead, explore new boundaries, and bring fresh thinking to the Group businesses as part of the Jardine Executive Trainee Scheme (JETS).

Turning Heads and Changing Minds

The branding initiative aimed to refresh the Jardines brand and highlight the innovative, diverse, and exciting career pathways offered to Jardine Executive Trainees. Relaunched in mid-2018, the programme has had a significant impact, especially in driving up the number of applications for JETS – this increased by more than four times compared to application numbers received in 2016.

Brand awareness and appeal has also improved. At the end of 2018 a customised employer brand attractiveness survey was run by Universum – an employer branding specialist – to see where Jardines stands compared to competitors and if this ranking has improved since 2016.

Singapore registered the biggest upswing, with Jardines rising 35 places from a ranking of 58 in 2016 to 23 in 2018. In Hong Kong, the ranking improved 11 places to 21 in 2018 from 32 in 2016. Students in the United Kingdom are also more aware of Jardines with a ranking of 34 in 2018 compared to 39 in 2016.

Commenting on the campaign, Jardine Matheson Group HR Director John Nolan said, “The launch of the Jardines Employer Brand campaign clearly demonstrates that the more people learn about our story, reach, and impact, the more they want to join us and pursue the opportunities offered by our diverse businesses.”

Branding Campaign Helps Drive Record Number of Grad Applications

The JETS launch in China included a presentation made to Peking University students.

People in the Group Stephen Gore has been appointed Group Finance Director for Jardine Cycle & Carriage, based in Singapore. He succeeds Adrian Teng, who stepped down from the role in March.

Mr Gore joined Jardines in 2017 after nearly 25 years in investment banking and most recently held the role of Chief Financial Officer, Jardine Pacific and Jardine Motors Group.

Jocelyn Lam is the new Group Head of Taxation for Jardine Matheson. Ms Lam, who has over 20 years of tax experience across Asia Pacific, joins from Search Investment Group where she was Executive Director, Tax Planning and Estate Planning, providing tax advisory and compliance advice for the Group. She takes over from Betty Chan who is retiring after a distinguished 27-year career with Jardines, where she helped build and lead Group Taxation, playing a key role in ensuring tax compliance in jurisdictions where the Group operates as well as supporting many M&A transactions.

Outreach Makes a Difference

Social media and digital channels were also used extensively to connect with potential new talent, noted Mr Nolan.

A new careers site: careers.jardines.com, featuring testimonials from current trainees, was also created. In addition, pop-up JETS Cafés set up at Nanyang Technological University and the National University of Singapore were visited by more than 1,000 students in a day.

Other related activities included the launch of JETS in China and Vietnam in 2018, as well as an internship initiative in China, which has subsequently been introduced in Hong Kong this year – collectively, close to 3,000 applications have been received for the new internship programmes.

Given the significant rise in JETS application numbers, the Employer Brand campaign has achieved its primary objective. It has also dramatically increased awareness of both the Jardines brand and the exciting career opportunities offered by the Group, among top graduates in the target markets.
