his Kuga made me feel like ateenager all over again. You mayrecall that when you were young,you saw somebody for first timeand you were attracted by theirlooks. Then you get to meet themand after a while you becomeattracted by their personality aswell. Shortly afterwards you fall

madly in love with them and you say to yourself, “Thisis the one for me!” On collecting the Kuga test car, Iwas very favourably impressed by its looks. After amile or so driving, I was superbly impressed by itscomfort, effortless performance and the drivingpleasure it afforded me. Shortly afterwards I came tothe conclusion that this was the car for me, the one Iwould gladly have for the rest of my life!

The test car was powered by the lower outputversion of the 2.0 litre TDCI diesel engine, driving allfour wheels through a silky smooth six speed manualgearbox. I did not venture off-road with it, so I cannotexpress an opinion on that aspect of its performance,but on-road, in city, suburban and motorway drivingconditions, it was a relaxing and effortless performer,that gave me superb driving pleasure.

Its performance is certainly not lacking in any way.Out on an open road, it is credited with a top speed of188 kph (116 mph), which is well above the nationalspeed limits in most countries within the EU. Perhapsof more interest is its 0-100 kph acceleration time of10.7 seconds, which is certainly on the sporty side,especially considering that it is a spacious,comfortable, versatile, family car and not an out and

came with roof rails as an optional extra, allowingextra loads to be carried on the roof, up to amaximum weight of 75 kg. Family cars arefrequently needed to tow trailers or caravans andthis version of the Kuga can manage brakedtrailers/caravans of up to 2100 kg in weight, orunbraked trailers of up to 750 kg. The only negativepoint as far as towing is concerned, is the fact thatthe Kuga comes with a Spacesaver spare wheel.

The instruments and driving controls are all laidout for comfort and ease of use. The steering wheeladjusts for reach and height, so it is not difficult toget a comfortable position, where you can see theinstruments clearly through the upper segment ofthe steering wheel.

The instrument binnacle contains two large andtwo small analogue instruments, as well as acomprehensive digital panel. The large round dialon the left is the tachometer and the matching largeround dial on the right is the speedometer. The

The driver’s door armrest hasswitches for the four electric windows, aswell as the controls for the setting andadjustment of the two exterior rear viewmirrors. On the Titanium specificationthese fold in automatically when the

ignition is switched off.As mentioned earlier, I did not venture

off-road, but the ride and roadholding oncity, suburban, country roads andmotorways was excellent. The brakeslikewise were well up to all the normaldemands made on them.

Both front seats were well bolsteredand adjusted for reach and backrestangle. The driver’s seat was additionallyheight adjustable. The two outer rearseats were also comfortable and wellbolstered and had ISOfix fittings for childsafety seats. The centre rear seat wasflatter and harder, due to the foldingcentre armrest.
