Year-round radiator protectionOnce, we used alcohol diluted with waterto keep our coolant from freezing in thewinter. These days are now long past,however, and today, modern coolants havea whole range of functions:

• protection against corrosion

• protection against cavitation

• protection against frost

• protection against overheating

• high heat transfer

• temperature resistance

• hard water stability

• compatibility with materials

• low foaming

• protection against deposits

Enemy Number One – corrosionRust (corrosion) in the cooling system isthe worst enemy of any material. Anddealing with all the different alloys andmaterials with different surfaces used inengine blocks, cylinder heads and all the various sensors and switches is quite a job for any coolant. MOTOREX hasrisen to this major challenge by produc-ing a range of several antifreezes cus-tomized for specific materials and manu-facturer’s specifications (see table).

Speaking of cavitation ...Cavitation – the formation of tiny hollowspaces or bubbles within a fluid – is anothersource of problems. When they burst, theyrelease shockwaves in the cooling systemthat can destroy thin metal walls in theengine block.

MOTOREX ANTIFREEZE avoids the problem, as laboratory testing of itscavitation, erosion and corrosion proper-ties shows. These properties and others can only be tested in the laboratory – all the workshop can measure is the freezing point.

Complex chemical compositionAll MOTOREX ANTIFREEZE prod-ucts are based on ethylene glycol and in-hibitors such as those used to protect rubber components. Depending on the product and use, nitrite, phosphate amineand silicate additives may be unnecessary.

Glycol gives antifreeze a sweet taste, but it is also slightly poisonous. As a resultantifreeze should always be kept well out of the reach of children! Used coolantmust also always be carefully collected and properly disposed of.

The importance of regular changingOld coolant not changed in accordancewith the manufacturer’s specifications canresult in chemical reactions at high tem-peratures with disastrous consequences.Microscopic particles can be dissolvedfrom surfaces and form deposits at otherpoints. The result, a coating which reducesthe diameter of the cooling system or mayeven block a coolant channel completely, isa sure sign of impending damage to the

engine! The product data sheet shows theantifreeze needed and the mix for eachtype of protection. The antifreeze shouldbe mixed with clean, potable-quality tapwater.

Under the current Euro standard, dieselemission values will become steadily morerestrictive in future. For example, theEuro 4 and 5 exhaust emissions standardshave increased requirements for the motoroils used. Deep-hole drilling on a modern machiningcenter requires a deep-hole drill and a powerful high-pressure cooling system. In deep-hole drilling of high alloy stainlesssteels like those used in medical devices,the drilling fluid continuously flushes chipsout of the hole under very high pressure,ensuring process reliability at every stage.

INOX 1.4441 implantThe processing for the implant in the illus-tration includes turning, tapping, deep-hole drilling, hexagon milling, cutting andsmoothing. If all the steps are to be doneon the same machining center, the cuttingoil used must also be high-performance.Conventional deep-hole drilling oil cannotmeet this requirement. For proper machin-ing of the piece, the cutting oil must havethe following properties:

The comparison series was produced onidentical TORNOS machining centerswith the same tools. Particular attentionwas paid to the results of deep-hole drillingusing a conventional deep-hole drilling oiland MOTOREX ORTHO NF-X. The extreme requirements in terms of highpressure stability and cooling properties of the cutting oil during deep-hole drilling(bit diameter 1.15 mm, hole depth 60 mm)revealed significant differences after only a short time.

The greatest advantage of ORTHO NF-X, with its low viscosity of ISO 15, was its ability to bridge the gap between athick oil, e.g. 32 cSt, for tapping and a thinoil for deep-hole drilling without any lossof performance. While surface quality was virtually identical in the previous pro-cessing stages, deep-hole drilling withORTHO NF-X showed sharply improvedtool life (see diagram of drill bit life) withoptimized Ra values.

Overall performance also increased greatly,by over 47.6%. The improvement is attrib-

Deep-hole drilling with a favorable side effectDeep-hole drilling on a machining centerbegins with a pilot hole. During drillingwith the solid carbide single-lip bit the toolis supported by the guide pads on the holewall. This has a smoothing effect, givingthe high surface quality (Ra value) which is a characteristic of deep-hole drilling, and maximizes tolerance and shape accura-cy in drilling. This otherwise requires anadditional process, such as lapping. Theability to omit lapping as a processing stagenot only boosts production capacity but also has cost benefits.
