Auxiliary Pod and Ripper Control.The optional ripper control andauxiliary control pod are ergonomicallypositioned to allow simple, comfortableoperation for the multiple hydraulicoptions.

Visibility. The 14M boasts excellentvisibility to the work area, made possiblewith angled cab doors, a tapered engineenclosure and a patented sloped rearwindow.

Cat Comfort Series Seat. The CatComfort Series suspension seat has anergonomic high-back design, with extrathick contoured cushions and infinitelyadjustable lumbar support that evenlydistributes the operator’s weight.Multiple seat controls and armrestsare easy to adjust for optimal supportand comfort all day. Controls and Switches. Reliable, long-life rocker switches are located on theright side cab post and front instrumentcluster, within easy reach for the operator.

Comfort and Convenience. Caterpillarhas built the most comfortable cab inthe industry by replacing the controllevers and steering wheel with twojoystick controls, and lengthening thecab to give more leg room.Multiple adjustment capabilities for thearm rest, wrist rests and joystick podshelp keep the operator comfortablethroughout a long shift.

Optional HVAC. The optional heating,ventilation and air conditioning systemuses intelligent vent placement forconsistent climate control and clearwindows for every condition. The high-capacity system dehumidifies air andpressurizes the cab, circulating fresh airand sealing out dust. An easily accessiblefresh air filter is located outside the cabat ground level for quick replacementor cleaning.

Optional HVAC Precleaner. Increasesthe service interval of the HVAC freshair filter by up to ten times.

Low Interior Sound and VibrationLevels. Isolation mounts for the cab,engine and transmission, in additionto the relocation of the hydraulic pumpand valves, provide significant soundand vibration reductions. The lowvibration levels and quiet interior (lessthan 70 dB(A)) provide a comfortablework environment.

Steering and Implement ControlsThe 14M sets the new standard for motor grader operational efficiency.

Ease of Operation. The revolutionaryjoystick controls and exceptionalvisibility make the 14M easier tooperate without sacrificing control.The intuitive joystick control patternallows both new and experiencedoperators to become productive quickly.Logical grouping of hydraulic functionsin the joysticks allow any operator toeasily control several functions at thesame time. This allows the operatorto be more productive and remaincomfortable throughout the work shift.

Intuitive Steering Control. The 14Mintroduces a breakthrough in joysticksteering control. This technologycreates a direct relationship betweenthe lean angle of the joystick and theturning angle of the steer tires.A brake tensioning system holds thejoystick in position until the operatormoves it. In addition, the steeringcontrol automatically reduces steeringsensitivity at higher ground speeds forcomfortable and predictable control.

Electronic Throttle Control. ElectronicThrottle Control (ETC) provides theoperator with easy, precise, and consistentthrottle operation. An automatic andmanual mode on a single switch offersflexibility for different applicationsand operator preferences.

Structures and Drawbar, Circle, MoldboardDurable structures with fast and simple DCM adjustments deliver precise material control while lowering operating costs.

Front Frame Structure. The 14M frontframe is a formed structural carbon steeltube. Advanced fabrication technologysignificantly reduces the number of weldjoints, which more evenly distributesstress loads. The result is a robustmachine that delivers the durabilityyou expect from Caterpillar.

Rear Frame Structure. The box-sectionedhitch design and cast axle mountinghelp resist torsion loads and ensurestructural durability. The integratedbumper ties the rear frame togetheras a single, solid unit, so the frame canwithstand heavy-duty applications suchas ripping and winging snow.

Articulation Hitch. A large taperedroller bearing at the lower pivot carriesloads evenly and smoothly. This joint issealed to prevent contamination in thiscritical area.A mechanical locking pin preventsframe articulation to help ensure safetywhen servicing or transporting themachine.

Circle Construction. Our one-pieceforged steel circle is built to stand up tohigh stress loads and provide structuraldurability. The front 240° of circle teethare hardened to reduce wear and ensurecomponent reliability.

Drawbar Construction. The A-framedrawbar features a tubular design forhigh strength and optimum durability.

Aggressive Blade Angle. With a longwheelbase the operator can obtainaggressive moldboard angles, so materialrolls more freely along the length of theblade. This is particularly helpful whenhandling very dry materials or cohesivesoils. Better material control gets thejob done faster, requires less powerand saves fuel.

Top-adjust drawbar wear strips

Top-Adjust Drawbar Wear Strips.The patented top-adjust wear stripsdramatically reduce drawbar/circleadjustment time. By removing the accessplates on top of the drawbar, shims and wearstrips can easily be added or replaced. This feature reduces service downtime andlowers overall machine operating costs.

Replaceable Wear Inserts. Tough, durablenylon composite wear inserts reducerotational friction for maximum circletorque and longer component life. They arelocated between the drawbar and circle, andbetween the support shoes and circle. Highload-resistant brass wearstrips are placedbetween the blade mounting group andmoldboard. This sacrificial wear system can be replaced easily and helps keepcomponents tight for fine grading.

Moldboard. The optimal curvature and largethroat clearance help move material quicklyand efficiently. Heat-treated moldboardrails, hardened cutting edges and end bits,and large diameter bolts assure reliabilityand longer service life. The moldboard sideshift cylinder is positioned on the left side to eliminate snow wing interference.

Moldboard Positioning. The blade link bardesign extends the possibilities formoldboard positioning, most beneficial inmid-range bank sloping and in ditch cuttingand cleaning.

Shimless Moldboard Retention System.The unique shimless moldboard retentionsystem reduces the potential for bladechatter. Vertical and horizontal adjustingscrews keep the moldboard’s wear stripsaligned for precise blade control anddramatic reductions in service time.

Smooth Shifting Transmission. The 14Mcombines several key innovations toensure smooth, powerful shiftsthroughout the gear range.

Electronically Controlled Shifting.The full Electronic Clutch PressureControl (ECPC) system optimizes inchingmodulation and smooths shiftingbetween all gears and directional changes.This provides outstanding control andalso extends the life of the transmissionby reducing stress on the gears.

Load Compensation. This standardfeature ensures consistent shift qualityregardless of blade or machine load.

Controlled Throttle Shifting. This standardfeature helps to smooth directionaland gear changes without use of theinching pedal.

Engine Over-Speed Protection.Helps protect the transmission andextend component life by preventingdownshifting until a safe travel speedhas been established.

Power Shift Countershaft Transmission.Designed and manufactured specificallyfor the 14M motor grader, the directdrive countershaft transmission ismatched with the powerful Cat C11engine to maximize power to the ground.

Front axle

Front Axle. The Caterpillar® sealed spindle keeps the bearingsfree from contaminants and lubricated in a light-weight oil (1).This durable, low-maintenance design reduces your owningand operating costs. Two double tapered roller bearings (2)support the wheel spindle. The Cat “Live Spindle” designplaces the larger tapered roller bearing outboard where theload is greater, extending bearing life.

Gear Selection. Eight forward and six reverse gears give theoperator a wide operating range. The specifically designedrange of gears ensures maximum productivity in allearthmoving applications.

Programmable Autoshift. The operator can easily customizevarious shift parameters through Cat Messenger to match thespecific application requirement. This feature automaticallyshifts the transmission at optimal points so the operator canfocus on the work, improving safety, productivity and ease ofoperation.

Inching Pedal. Allows precise control of machine movementsin any gear with low pedal effort and excellent modulation,critical in close-quarter work or finish grading.

Hydraulic Brakes. The oil bathed, multi-disc service brakesare hydraulically actuated (1), providing smooth predictablebraking and lower operating costs. With brakes located at eachtandem wheel, the 14M offers the largest total brake surfacearea in the industry (2), delivering dependable stopping powerand longer brake life.

Brake Serviceability and Reliability. An easily accessiblebrake wear indicator/compensator system (3) maintainsconsistent brake performance and indicates brake wearwithout disassembly. This system cuts service time andextends brake service life.

Parking Brake. The spring-applied, hydraulically releasedmulti-disc parking brake can be easily serviced withouttransmission removal to reduce operating cost. A sealed, oil-cooled design extends component life and reduces the need forservice.

EngineThe 14M combines power management with ACERT™ Technology to deliver maximumpower and efficiency while reducing the environmental impact.

ACERT™ Technology. ACERTTechnology allows Cat enginesto supply more power per unit ofdisplacement without causing prematurewear. This breakthrough technologyreduces emissions during the combustionprocess by using advanced technologyin the air and fuel systems, in conjunctionwith integrated electronics. ACERTTechnology enhances overall engineperformance while dramaticallyreducing exhaust emissions.

Fuel Delivery. The C11 engine withACERT Technology uses multipleinjection fuel delivery to precisely shapethe combustion cycle. Several smallignitions lower combustion chambertemperatures, generates fewer emissionsand optimizes fuel combustion. Bottomline: more work output for your fuel cost.

Power Management. The 14M PowerManagement System automaticallydelivers an additional five horsepowerin each forward gear 1st through 4th,and each reverse gear 1st through 3rd.This standard feature optimizes rimpullfor all gears by balancing traction,speed and horsepower while conservingfuel. The system limits horsepower inlower gears, which helps reduce wheelslip where traction is limited. With theVariable Horsepower Plus (VHP Plus)option, an additional five-horsepoweris delivered in each forward gear 5ththrough 8th for more power athigher speeds.

Performance. The Cat C11 enginemeets specific performance requirementsfor 14M applications. Its superior torqueand lugging capability can pull throughsudden, short-term increases in loads,maintaining consistent, desirablegrading speeds to get the work donefaster without downshifting.

Hydraulic Demand Fan. The hydraulicdemand fan automatically adjustscooling fan speed according to enginecooling requirements. This systemreduces demands on the engine, puttingmore horsepower to the ground andimproving fuel efficiency.

Exhaust Emissions Compliant.The Cat C11 with ACERT Technologymeets or exceeds all and EuropeanUnion Stage IIIA emissions controlstandards.

Advanced Electro-Hydraulic System.The 14M incorporates a state-of-the-artelectro-hydraulic system. This technologyis the foundation for revolutionarychanges of the machine and implementcontrols. Advanced joystick controlsprovide unmatched controllability withprecise, predictable hydraulic movementsand the reliability you expect fromCaterpillar.

Blade Float. Blade float is built into theblade lift control valves and is optionalfor some auxiliary hydraulic functions.The blade float feature allows the bladeto move freely under its own weight.By floating both cylinders, the bladecan follow the contours of the roadwhen removing snow. Floating onlyone cylinder permits the toe of theblade to follow a hard surface whilethe operator controls the slope withthe other lift cylinder.

Cat® XT™ Hose. Caterpillar hosetechnology allows high pressures formaximum power and reduced downtime.Intelligent routing minimizes exposureto damage. Hose clips prevent hoserubbing and excessive vibration forlower owning and operating costs.

Independent Oil Supply. Large, separatehydraulic oil supply prevents cross-contamination and provides proper oilcooling, which reduces heat build-upand extends component life.

Load Sensing Hydraulics (PPPC).The time proven load-sensing systemand the advanced Proportional PriorityPressure-Compensating (PPPC, or“triple-PC”) electro-hydraulic valveson the 14M are designed to providesuperior implement control and enhancedmachine performance in all applications.Continuous matching of hydraulic flowand pressure to power demands createsless heat and reduces power consumption.

Balanced Flow. Hydraulic flow isproportioned to ensure all implementsoperate simultaneously with little effecton the engine or implement speeds.If demand exceeds pump capacity, allcylinder velocities are reduced by thesame ratio. The result is improvedproductivity in all applications.

Consistent and Predictable Movement.PPPC valves have different flow ratesfor the head and rod ends of the cylinder.This ensures consistent extension andretraction speeds for each cylinder,and gives the operator a consistentand predictable response every timean implement control is moved.

Integrated Electronic SolutionsFull systems integration optimizes machine performance and availability.

14M with AccuGrade™ System

“Smart Machine”. The 14M fullyintegrates all core systems creating a“Smart Machine.” The Cat data linkshares key data among systems,optimizing machine performance whilepreventing potential machine damage.

Electronic Technician (Cat ET). Cat ETis a two-way communication tool thatgives service technicians easy accessto stored diagnostic data and lets themconfigure the machine parameters throughthe Cat Data Link. This integrated featurereduces machine downtime and lowersoperating costs.

Diagnostics. Cat Messenger, combinedwith full systems integration, enhancesthe diagnostic capability of the 14M.Machine system errors are displayed intext as well as with fault codes, allowingservice technicians and operators toquickly analyze critical data, increasingmachine availability.

Machine Security System (MSS).The optional MSS uses electronicallycoded keys to limit usage by specificindividuals or times of the day.MSS deters theft, vandalismand unauthorized use.

Product Link. The optional Product Linksystem streamlines diagnostic efforts,and reduces downtime, maintenancescheduling and costs by providing acommunication flow of vital machinedata and location. Product Link givesautomatic updates on machine parameterssuch as machine hours, machine condition,location, fault codes and alarms.

Low Battery Elevated Idle. After the 14Mis at low idle for an extended periodand low system voltage is detected, idlespeed is raised. This ensures adequatesystem voltage and improves batteryreliability.

Automatic Engine Deration. Protects theC11 engine by automatically loweringengine torque output and alerting theoperator if critical conditions are detected.

Optional Automatic Blade Control.The Caterpillar AccuGrade Systemautomatically controls the blade,improving operator efficiency andproductivity. AccuGrade™ technologyreduces the need for traditional surveystakes or grade checkers, so you canreach grade faster and in fewer passesthan ever before.

AccuGrade Attachment Ready Option.The AccuGrade System is fully integratedinto the machine design, makinginstallation quick and easy. Integralhydraulic and electrical components arestandard on the 14M (Grade ControlReady). The AccuGrade AttachmentReady Option provides additionalmounting brackets, cab controls andelectrical harnesses for easy installationof the Cross Slope, Sonic, Laser, GPSor ATS electronics kits.

Cat Messenger. Standard on the 14M,Cat Messenger provides real-timemachine performance and diagnosticdata with an easy-to-use interface.Messenger monitors all system data andalerts the operator of any faults througha digital text display that can be shownin multiple languages.

Work Tools and AttachmentsThe Work Tools and optional attachments for the 14M expand machine versatility,utilization and performance.

Moldboard Options. A 4.3 m moldboardis standard on the 14M, with an optional4.9 m moldboard available from thefactory. Left and right side moldboardextensions are also available, increasingversatility.

Ground Engaging Tools (GET). A widevariety of Caterpillar GET is availableon the 14M, including cutting edges,graderbits and end bits, all designed formaximum service life and productivity.

Front Mounted Groups. A front mountedpush plate/counterweight can be orderedon the 14M. The Caterpillar Work Toolsfront lift group can be combined with afront dozer blade or front scarifier foradded versatility.

Ripper. The 14M optional ripper is madeto penetrate tough material fast and ripthoroughly for easier material movementwith the moldboard. The ripper includesthree shanks with the ability to add fourmore if needed.

Automatic Lubrication System.The optional Lincoln AutomaticLubrication System maintains theproper grease lubrication on workingsurfaces, significantly extendingcomponent life. Contaminants arepurged from open pins and bushingsto help prevent dirt from damagingcritical components.

Air Compressor. An optional aircompressor is available, giving you a convenient on-board air system toblow debris off the machine and operatepower tools.

Fast-Fill Fuel Option. The 14M offers a Fast-Fill option allowing customers torefuel in less than two minutes for fast,accurate filling and reduced downtime.

SafetySafety is an integral part of all machine and system designs.

Operator Presence System. The OperatorPresence System keeps the parkingbrake engaged and hydraulic implementsdisabled until the operator is seated andthe machine is ready for safe operation.

Secondary Steering System. The standardsecondary steering system automaticallyengages an electric hydraulic pumpin case of a drop in steering pressure,allowing the operator to steer themachine to a stop.

Speed Sensitive Steering. The steeringsoftware automatically provides aninfinitely variable ratio between thejoystick and the steer tires, resultingin less sensitive steering as the groundspeed increases.

Low Sound and Vibration Levels.Isolation mounts for the cab, engineand transmission maximize operatorcomfort and help to minimize soundand vibration. These modificationsprovide a quieter and more comfortableworking environment, optimizingoperator focus.

Hydraulic Lockout. A simple switchlocated in the cab disables all implementfunctions while still providing machinesteering control. This safety feature isespecially useful while the machineis roading.

Brake Systems. Brakes are located ateach tandem wheel to eliminate brakingloads on the power train. In addition,the brake systems are redundant andutilize accumulators to enable stoppingin case of machine failure, furtherincreasing operational safety.

Drop-Down Rear Lights. Optional drop-down lights fold out from the rear of themachine. This creates a wider, lowerprofile to be better aligned withpassenger cars.

Rearview Camera. Visibility is furtherenhanced with an optional Work AreaVision System (WAVS) through a178 mm LCD color monitor in the cab.Developed specifically for ruggedapplications, this durable cameraimproves productivity and increasesoperator awareness of surroundings.

High Intensity Discharge (HID) Lighting.Optional HID lights can replace thestandard halogen lamps. The powerfulHID lights are four times brighter,improving night time visibility and safety.

Steel Tandem Walkways. Perforatedraised steel walkways cover the tandems.This provides a sturdy platform forstanding and walking, and additionalprotection for the brake lines.

ROPS/FOPS Cab. Isolation mountedto the frame to reduce vibration andsound, the integral ROPS/FOPSstructure meets ISO and SAE criteriafor operator protection.

Circle Drive Slip Clutch. This standardfeature protects the drawbar, circle andmoldboard from shock loads when theblade encounters an immovable object.It also reduces the possibility of abruptdirectional changes in poor tractionconditions, protecting the machine,operator and surroundings.

Blade Lift Accumulators. This optionalfeature uses accumulators to help absorbimpact loads to the moldboard byallowing vertical blade travel. Blade liftaccumulators reduce unnecessary wearand help to avoid unintended machinemovement for increased operator safety.

Dual Exits. The operator has dualexits from the machine allowing foremergency egress should one sidebecome obstructed. If the machine isnot equipped with the optional righthand door, a hammer is mounted inthe cab for emergency exit.

Engine Shutoff Switch. An engineshutoff switch is located at ground levelon the left rear of the machine, allowinganyone nearby to shut it down in caseof an emergency.

Rear Fenders. To help reduce objectsflying from the tires, as well as build-upof mud, snow and debris, optional rearfenders can be added.
