By the close of 2007 Motive8 had designed and fitted 35 health & fitness facilities in the UK. The Motive8 project development strategy has gone from strength to strength with the end product being a facility that is first class and more functional and desirable for users than ever before.

We have a hectic start to the new year, with no less than 12 health and fitness facilities to fit-out in the first quarter. These span across the country from central London to Leeds and involve relationships with developers such as Barratt Homes, Telford Homes and Scotfields.

Within each of these facilities we will be launching our new online training service – e-training - to all gym users.

“As a company we are very excited about the year ahead. Our market sector continues to grow as more developers find the M8 package a valuable asset to their projects. We continue to be impressed and challenged by the vision of our clients as we move into an evermore competitive marketplace“

- Nick Sadler, Director

Early last year we committed to sponsoring seven teams from the Barratt East London head office for the Michelob London Triathlon. We provided all participants with bespoke Samurai and Asics performance kit and supplied them all with specialist equipment via our partnership with SBR, the Triathlon specialists.

Team training sessions were held weekly leading up to the event and after months of hard training all competitors did extremely well in the sunshine at the final event in the Docklands.

Employees at Barratt East London raised a significant sum of money for charity. One of the beneficiaries included local community project Streets of Growth. Barratt have commissioned us to work with the organisation over the next year to develop their project leaders – see Motive8 Schools for more details.

M8 CorporateLast year we undertook a pilot training scheme at Chiswick Honda as part of the development of our Corporate Training product.

This centers around the ability to perform well in the business environment and involves testing the “Business Athlete”. We are not interested in just operating a corporate facility, – we want to make a difference to the health of the workforce. We have been training top employees at Chiswick Honda for five years; however we have developed our product to include fitness screening, seminars (including psychology and nutrition) and then integration of our e-training package with face-to-face training.

Motive8 have started an exciting programme with community organisation Streets of Growth, based in Bromley-by-Bow.

We will be working with existing leaders within SOG to implement Sports Leader Awards for other young people in the community. At the end of the course a multi-sport tournament will take place for everyone in the community to enjoy. Olympic High Jumper Ben Challenger will be acting as an elite mentor on the programme and will be assisting in a track and field master class at Mile End Stadium.

The aim of this programme over the coming year is to produce new leaders from Bromley-by-Bow in order to support Streets of Growth and the number and range of activities they can offer in their local community. Also to encourage positive engagement between as many young people as possible.

Elite trainingOur Elite brand has developed quickly in the last 6 months. Director of Motive8 Jon Pitts is now working as a consultant to the British Equestrian Federation, providing Sports Science support to all Olympic squad members across four disciplines, including Eventing, Dressage, Show Jumping and Paralympic Riders.

The current focus is to prepare the riders for the climate demands of competition in Hong Kong where the equestrian sports are based. British equestrian sports are among our strongest medal chances, so fingers crossed! Jon is also working with the British Olympic Association. and Clive Woodward, developing an elite training support system designed to maximise medal potential at London 2012.

Furthermore, Jon is currently working with the British Racing School in collaboration with the Royal Veterinary College, developing pioneering research into the relationship of rider and horse during movement patterns. All this equestrian work will hopefully cumulate into a campaign designed at raising the safety awareness of riders: this may mean we all have to get on to horse back!!!

Want to lose weight? Keep eating! It is important to eat at regular intervals, ideally every 3-5 hours. This helps to keep blood sugar levels stable and increase your metabolic rate.

Skipping meals or reducing your calorie intake does not help control weight in the long term. Your body is very efficient at making the most of the calories it gets from food and drink by protecting its fat stores and instead using lean tissue or muscle to provide it with some of the calories it needs to keep functioning. This directly leads to a loss of muscle, which in turn

lowers metabolic rate so that the body needs fewer calories to keep ticking over and weight loss slows down.

Therefore if you’re trying to lose weight, it’s going to do little to help you shift those unwanted pounds. The most effective way to lose weight is to continually graze the correct types of foods whilst performing an exercise regime of cardiovascular and resistance exercises. In this way we trick the body into breaking down more fat than it wants to.

The launch of M8 e-training Motive8’s innovative online training system is launching in all our residential gyms this month. Users of M8 gyms will have access to weekly fitness programmes designed specifically to maximise the use of the equipment in their facility. They will be sent frequent reminders and updates via email and can speak to a Motive8 Personal Trainer when they need more in depth advice on their training regime.

It had been a number of years since she had performed any regular exercise due to having an extremely busy lifestyle, bringing up two very young children. However, during her 3 free sessions and discussions about health and exercise with her trainer, Jenny realised the importance of sustaining an ongoing exercise programme. Through one-to-one sessions with her trainer she received motivation and realised that, through a varied, enjoyable, yet structured and disciplined fitness programme, it was possible to get back to the fitness she once had.

Jenny decided to sign up to blocks of training and has now discovered the benefits of becoming a direct debit client, allowing her to receive regular sessions at the same time each week, as well as financial savings.

“With the knowledge that I have to train a set number of times per week, not only do I get the rewards for my health, body and mind, but I also save money”.

In 2008 Jenny will be training three times per week at regular time slots.

“If my trainer didn’t turn up on my doorstep at the same time three days a week, I would not have the motivation I now have and certainly wouldn’t receive the benefits and enjoyment I do now from my training. Training with Motive8 has now become part of my lifestyle”.

Case study // Personal trainingBusy 45-year-old mother of two, Jenny Karen has been training with Motive8 since January 2005. She first heard about Motive8 from a close friend and then won 3 free personal training sessions at her children’s school Christmas charity auction.

We would like to welcome the host of new Schools that we have worked with in 2007 and will continue into 2008. These include Malden Manor Primary School, Knollmede Primary School, Stanley Junior School, Grey Court School and Orleans Park School. We are also looking forward to working in Hampton Court House School and St Mary’s and St Peter’s School who joined Motive8 in January.

With our new team in place we have developed new courses to run in schools. These include Junior Sports Leaders Awards and Self Esteem Through Sport, adapted for children at both Primary and Secondary levels.

For Primary School children with poor motor skills we have also created a programme to enhance basic skill control and co-ordination to ensure these children can take part in normal PE lessons. Motive8 are also producing Healthy Lifestyle Workshops to ensure children understand the importance of being active and the changes that happen to their body at this time.

Kew Partnership – Multi-sport holiday campsMotive8 are still working closely with Kew Partnerships, implementing camps for children during half terms and holidays. In addition to this, Motive8 are also working at Barn Church Youth Club where our coaches attend the club on a Friday night to coach the children in any sports they want to play.

For details on the forthcoming holiday camps please contact Tim Holdsworth on 0800 028 0198.

Welcoming new schoolsThe Motive8 Schools Team has now established a strong management team, headed up by Spencer Casey as Schools Manager with the recent additions of Tim Holdsworth and Emma Pilgrim.

Tim has taken on the role of Community and Extended Schools Co-ordinator, focusing on projects such as Junior Sports Leaders Awards and organising summer camps. Emma Pilgrim has joined Motive8 from Exeter University and is carrying out research in Schools to ensure that Motive8 provide high quality sporting sessions.

We began partnerships last year with Richmond College and St Mary’s University and will be taking on several members of staff on work placements throughout the year.

New M8 courses

Grey Court is a Secondary School based in Ham, Richmond. They have had a tough few years with numerous heads and low Ofsted results, but with a new head teacher in place that has a very determined plan for the school over the next 5 years, results have already improved. Motive8 have developed a strong relationship with the school and aside from Curricular sports provision, after-school clubs, various specialist courses and sports day, Motive8 organised a ‘Grey Court Celebration of Sport’. The ceremony was held at the Brit Oval, provided courtesy of OCS, and was presented by Olympic 400m British Record Holder, Iwan Thomas MBE. It was a fantastic night and the children, their parents and Grey Court teachers celebrated the pupils’ sporting achievements in style.
