FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Friends, As our parish gathers this weekend, we remember all the saints who have gone before us whether formally declared by the Church or not. We are rejuvenated by their example and are inspired by their living out a virtuous life in spite of turbulence and suffering. Today we remember too, the Church of the Souls, who are purifying themselves in the light of the Lord before they see God face to face. All souls must be perfectly pure before entering heaven and so we pray diligently this whole month for the souls of our family members and friends who have gone before us. The Church dedicated this month to the Souls so that together we can remember those we love and sadly miss. During this whole month, Monsignor and I will be remembering the people you have inscribed on our All Souls envelopes. These names will be kept on the Shrine of Saint Joseph who is both the Guardian of the Church and the Protector of Souls. If too, you would like to display the picture of someone you lost this year, please place the picture on the Saint Joseph shrine. This way we can see for whom we are praying! Extra Souls envelopes can be found at the doors of the Church. This Friday, November 7 is the second first Friday in our Novena to the Sacred Heart. I am encouraged by all the pictures from our PREP classes of families who have begun the Novena in their homes. The novena prayer and a booklet on the Sacred Heart can be found at the doors of our Church so that your family may pray with us for the next eight months for more vocations to the priesthood and to the Consecrated Life. Also in November is the month to help Saint Charles Seminary in their efforts to form priests for our Archdiocese. It is the month when we pay special attention to the Annual Seminary Collection. Please be generous in your support of our seminary. As you know we have two seminarians who will be ordained priests in May, something of which we can be very proud.

Please be assured of prayers for you in this

glorious month,

Father Cioppi

BAPTISM UPDATE

Part 2 of 3: WHY CELEBRATE BAPTISM IN THE SUNDAY

LITURGY? Today, many parishes celebrate Baptism within the Sunday Eucharistic Liturgy. Why? All of the seven Sacraments are community events. They are not primarily “private” moments or individual

celebrations. The Sacraments are celebrations of the whole Church, represented by the parish family! This is especially true of Baptism, because it changes the status of the one being baptized into a member of the Church community. The baptized person enters into a special relationship with the Church and with God. This status or identity is renewed in Sunday Eucharist. Celebrating Baptisms of babies during Sunday Eucharist signifies that baptism is incorporating the baby into both the Church and the Life of Christ. It also gives mature Catholics a chance to reflect on the meaning of their own baptism so many years ago. Next week we will learn about the importance of the parish community at Baptism. This update is part of a series on baptism celebrating the new “during Mass” baptismal option for our parish children at the 11:30am liturgy on the first Sunday of each month, beginning in December.

IN OUR PARISH

A YEAR DEDICATED TO MARY

THE PRESENTATION OF MARY Many of the celebrations in honor of Mary are based in historical fact. The Sacred Scriptures tell of her acceptance of God’s invitation to be the mother of the Savior at the Annunciation. We know of her maternity and of her faithfulness to her son, Jesus, even standing at the side of His cross. The Scriptures tells us nothing of Mary's hidden life. The inspired Word of God gives us no word about her Presentation in the Temple, the feast which we celebrate each year on November 21st. However, we do have the testimonies of tradition which are based on accounts which come to us from apostolic times. The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Temple is found in early Christian writings that are not included in the Old Testament, or apocrypha.

The book “Apocrypha” gives us a detailed account in which Mary's father, Joachim, tells Anna his wife that he wishes to bring their child to the Temple of the Lord. Anna responds that they should wait until the child is three years old lest she yearn for her parents. When the day arrived, the undefiled daughters of the Hebrews were invited to accompany Mary with their lamps burning to the Temple. There the priest received her, blessed her, and kissed her in welcome. He proclaimed, "The Lord has magnified thy name in all generations. In thee, the Lord will manifest His redemption to the sons of Israel." Mary was placed on the third step of the Temple and there danced with joy and all the house of Israel loved her. It was there that she was nurtured and her parents returned, glorifying the Almighty. This story is a legend with no foundation in history and the point of the story is to show that even in her childhood Mary was completely dedicated to God. However, it is from this very account that the feast of Mary's Presentation arose. It appears that this feast was not celebrated in Rome at the time of Pope St. Sergius (+701) who established four other principle feasts dedicated to Mary. By the ninth century it is celebrated in the monasteries of southern Italy which had been influenced by the traditions of the Byzantine churches. By the fourteenth century it had spread to England and it is recorded that it was celebrated in Avignon, France in 1373. Its acceptance is considered very slow and it was not until the year 1472 that Pope Sixtus IV extended its celebration to the universal church. Pope Paul VI in the 1974 encyclical Marialis Cultus, n.8, wrote of this feast that "despite its apocryphal content, it presents lofty and exemplary values and carries on the venerable traditions having their origins in the Eastern churches." Join us as we celebrate the Presentation of Mary on Friday, November 21

14th ANNUAL CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR AND BAZAAR Holiday Gazette

All parishioners and friends of MDP are invited to participate in the upcoming Christmas Craft Fair & Bazaar, to be held on Saturday, November 15th, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in the school. Plans for the bazaar have been underway for the past six months to provide something for everyone. Over 120 spots have been sold to over 100 different crafters who will offer an exciting array of items to those getting a head start on their Christmas shopping. There are many new crafters attending this year, as well as those returning from previous bazaars. Ready and waiting for early bird shoppers, booths staffed by our own parishioners will also be available that day. Included in our special parish booths will be the Tombola Booth and the Books, Movies and Music Booth. The Tombola Booth will feature baskets filled with themed items, while the latter will offer gently used books, CDs and DVDs for your very own home entertainment pleasure. Stop by and pick up some family friendly films or CDs for a enjoyable evening at home.

For both children and adults, Santa will make a special visit from the North Pole. Bring your camera and take a picture if you’d like, and as an added bonus, a very special

elf will be passing out candy canes to all good boys and girls. You can see Santa between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. You may also look forward to the return of the Children’s Game Booth providing entertainment for all kids. The MDP Handmade Crafts Booth returns featuring an assortment of hand-made items made and donated by our own parishioners. So many of our talented parishioners have offered their time to help stock this booth, we are most grateful.

Don’t forget about those Chances that were mailed recently to all parishioners. The chances list prizes ranging from $50.00 to $500.00. The drawing will be held at 2:30 pm on Saturday. Have you sent yours back yet? They may also be dropped off at the Chance Booth at the bazaar. Our Café will again provide us with breakfast,

lunch and snacks. Volunteers have been working overtime to provide attendees a large variety from which to choose. For breakfast, you can choose from donuts or bagels to go with your coffee, tea or juice. In addition to meatball sandwiches, chili, hot dogs and pork sandwiches at lunch time, the Café will sell pasta salad, tossed salads, pierogies and other tasty fare. This year we’re asking for your support. If you are able to

donate a needed food item, please log on to www.perfectpotluck.com to sign up. A list and all other related information is provided on the site. The coordinator’s last name is

obrien and the password is mdp (both are case sensitive). The ever popular Baked Goods Booth will feature a variety of baked goods that our generous parishioners donate. Please consider donating your specialty. Your help is integral to the success of this booth. To identify our parish booths, look for the red and white signs with poinsettia graphics on them. As in the past, all proceeds from this event will benefit our entire parish. If you are interested in helping set up, clean up or volunteer at a booth, or if you have any other questions, please contact Donna at 484-367-7046 or [email protected]. Your help is vital to the success of this event.

SEE YOU AT THE BAZAAR, AND HAPPY SHOPPING!

MDP CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR & BAZAAR SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH 9AM-3PM

who lightens the burdens of

another.” Charles Dickens

BAKED GOODS DONATIONS It’s not too late to consider donating a baked good to this year’s Christmas Craft Fair and Bazaar. To sign up, please email Donna at [email protected]. Donations can be dropped off the day before or early the day of the bazaar. Your sweet specialty would be greatly appreciated.

VOLUNTEERS Can you believe there are only 2 weeks left until our 13

th annual Christmas Craft Fair & Bazaar? The day is

such a wonderful opportunity to connect with friends while getting a jump start on your Christmas shopping. This parish event continues to grow every year drawing over 1,000 guests through the door. We need your help to assure a successful day. Please call or email

Donna at 484-367-7046 or [email protected] to volunteer to help. Many hands make light work! We are also in need of strong arms to aid in setting up on Thursday night at 7:00. This involves setting up tables and chairs throughout the gym and school hallways. With enough help this shouldn’t take very long.

BOOKS, MOVIES & MUSIC BOOTH This booth (formerly called the Media Booth) needs to be stocked! If you have new or used books, as well as DVDs, CDs, or computer games that you are no longer using, please consider donating them to the bazaar. (No textbooks please.) If you have any of these items, published less than 20 years ago, and would like to donate them, please leave them in the rear of church after Mass next weekend only. We are very short on storage space, so this collection is for 1 weekend only. You may also consider dropping them off at school the day before the bazaar (11/14) between the hours of 10-12.

CHILDREN’S GAMES The prize shelves are empty!!! The Children’s Games booth organizers need to fill them. Donations of new or gently-used small dolls, small cars/trucks, or (NEW) stuffed animals would be much appreciated. If you have any of these items, please leave them clearly labeled in the back of church the weekend of Nov. 8-9.

FOOD DONATIONS The café at the bazaar provides a vast selection of fare. Much of the food is donated by local businesses, but we are still in need of some items to complete our selections. The following is a list of the particulars we could use. It goes without saying that the café is one of the most profitable areas at the bazaar. You can make your donation by signing up at www.perfectpotluck.com. The coordinator’s last name is obrien and the password is mdp (both are case sensitive) ALL DONATIONS (EXCEPT PASTA SALAD) SHOULD BE DROPPED OFF AT THE PROVIDENCE HALL UNLOADING DOOR, ON SUNDAY, NOV. 9

TH

BETWEEN 12:30-1:00pm. If you are unable to make that time, or if you have any other questions, please call Pat Campbell at 610-457-4492. If you’d rather donate cash in lieu of an item listed above, please send your donation to the parish offices in a clearly marked envelope: Christmas Craft Fair & Bazaar Café, or drop your envelope in the collection basket at church.

ADVENT REFLECTION BOOKS We will be selling the Advent Reflection Books in the back of church during the weekend of November 15 and 16 and November 22 and 23. We will sell as long as they last – come early. The cost is still $1.00. A small price to pay for many days of spiritual benefits from personal prayer.

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN THIS WEEK? Did you ever wonder how flowers and weeds came to be known as such? Why a rose is a flower and Queen Anne’s Lace is considered a weed? I take my daily walk in the morning, very early, and it is dark. I am paying a lot of attention to where I am walking and don’t see much more than that. But the other day, I took a walk after work and took myself along Allendale Road crossing the bridge over the turnpike. On my way back, I noticed a weed about a foot tall growing out of one of the cracks in the cement of the bridge. It had lovely white flowers on it. There it was, just growing,

doing its thing. I actually stopped to look at it and realized all that I miss walking in the dark. Do we allow ourselves to walk in the dark in other ways? Perhaps we are in the dark in our relationships with others, in our spiritual life. It really could be anything. Jesus tells us that He is the light of the world. Let’s take some time this week to pay attention to where He is leading us and the beauty and the truth He wants us to see in His Light. Let’s follow Him together. This Week’s Memo: Ghosts Don't Scare Me! Did you have a good Halloween this week? Sometimes all the talk of witches and ghosts can be scary, but do you know what? Christians know that we don’t have to be afraid at Halloween, or at any other time! Jesus tells us in the Bible readings today that when we die, He will take care of us! We will be with God, and with the other Christians who love God and do His will. So remember at Halloween time that the GOOD NEWS of Christianity laughs in the face of ghosts and ghouls. We are not afraid of ghosts! We are children of God and heading straight for Heaven! Wohoo! Liturgical Trivia! This week’s trivia: does the inside of a Catholic Church look more like a Jewish synagogue, or a Muslim mosque? Last week’s answer: you wouldn’t wear a “Kyrie Eleison” on your head or your feet! It was a trick question! The Kyrie (keer-ee-ay) is the “Lord have mercy” prayer at the beginning of Mass that we sometimes read in Greek! From the desk of Miss Lauren Joyce, DRE
