    it i ~ to Nost ra t ic . I have thought fo r some t ime now t h a t Afroas i a t i c andKhoisan had a lo t of "chanca 11 resemblances and th e same for Afroas ia t ic andIndo-European. Now my working hypothes i s i s t h a t Nost ra t i c i s p a r t of a evel a rge r "phylum", a l l of whose branches are not known, but which seems to has t rong A f r i c ~ n component. I f t h i s phylum holds up to th e kind of i n t ens iveinqu i ry I th ink we ought to make, then I suspec t it can eas i ly be 2 ~ , 0 0 0 yeo ld . That would be a rea l break- through in Old World preh i s to ry !

    But , i f we g e t involved with such a mass ive th ing as Nile-SaharanCongo-Kordofanian, or with th e American Indian s ide of Swadesh 's Vasco-Denethen I reckon t he da t e s would have to be much g r ea t e r , maybe doubled. But mmind r e t r e a t s in disorder from th e empir ica l chores involved in t a s t ing suchypothesis! We a l ready have our hands fu l l t ry ing to recons t ruc tp ro to -Afroas i a t i c , not to mention proto-Khoisan
