WHO ARE WE? Who are “we” today as we sing “We are his people, the sheep of his flock” in the responsorial psalm? It is very easy to think that it is just us, at this Mass, or just the members of this parish or diocese, or per-haps we are thinking it is all Roman Catholics in the United States. But “we” are much larger and broader than that. If you take a globe or atlas in your hand, it would be difficult to point to any place on land where “we” aren’t singing this psalm today. Not only that, but “we” are the saints who survived the great time of trial, as described in Revelation’s reading today. And “we” continue to grow not just in numbers but in complexity and diversity as the work begun by Paul and Barnabas in today’s first reading continues. But, even though who “we” are, the flock of the Lord, is almost beyond our ability to comprehend, we all hear the voice of Jesus Christ, our one and only shepherd, as we continue through the Easter season to follow him faithfully.

SAINT CATHERINE OF SIENA (1347-1380) April 29

Imagine the pope receiving a young woman still in her twenties who addresses him as “my sweet Christ on earth,” then orders: “Get back to Rome where you belong!” Amazingly, Greg-ory XI complied! Yet this was but one astonishing incident in the extraordi-nary life of Catherine of

Siena, a truly unique medieval woman. Youngest of twenty-five children, Catherine refused marriage and became a Dominican Tertiary at sixteen, clois-tering herself at home in contemplative prayer, aus-tere penances, and mystical experiences, culminat-ing in “spiritual espousal” to Christ. Then, incarnat-ing the Dominican ideal of “passing on to others the fruits of contemplation,” Catherine left her solitude to care for the poor, nurse the sick, comfort the dy-ing, and bury the dead. Increasingly renowned for converting souls and healing bodies, she was sought after to broker peace during civil wars and Church schisms. All this, and like Jesus, whom she called “my “Divine Spouse,” she died at thirty-three! Four hundred letters and her spiritual classic The Dialogue inspired Paul VI to name her, together with Teresa of Ávila, the first women “doctors of the Church.”

¿QUIÉNES SOMOS? ¿Quiénes son el “nosotros” cuando cantamos “nosotros somos su pueblo, ovejas de su rebaño” en el salmo responsorial? Es muy fácil pensar que se trata solamente de nosotros, en esta misa, o sólo los miembros de esta parroquia o diócesis, o tal vez pensamos que somos sólo los católicos en los Esta-dos Unidos. Pero el “nosotros” es mucho más gran-de y amplio. Si tomas un globo o un atlas entre tus manos, te resultará difícil señalar un lugar o tierra donde “nosotros” no estamos cantando ese salmo hoy. No sólo eso, sino que “nosotros” somos los san-tos que sobrevivieron la gran persecución, como describe la lectura de hoy del Apocalipsis. Y el “nosotros” continúa creciendo no solamente en número sino en complejidad y diversidad pues la obra que Pablo y Bernabé comenzaron hoy en la pri-mera lectura continúa en la actualidad. Pero, pese a que “nosotros” somos el rebaño del Señor, nos cues-ta comprender que todos oímos la voz de Jesucristo, nuestro único pastor, a medida que continuamos siguiéndolo fielmente en este tiempo de Pascua.

SANTA CATALINA DE SIENA (1347-1380)

29 de abril Catalina, siendo la más pequeña de una familia de 24 hermanos pidió a su madre un cuarto privado para orar. Este deseo ferviente de Dios fue el hilo conductor de su vida. Siendo muy pequeña hizo del amor a Dios y a los pobres el

centro de su vida. A los 16 años ingresó a la Orden Terciaria de las Dominicas llevando una vida de ora-ción, de obras de misericordia y viviendo recluta en su casa. Sus encuentros místicos con Dios eran fre-cuentes después de la comunión, pero no quería que se hablara de ello. También se dedicó a visitar presos y motivarlos a la conversión; en épocas de plagas se apresuraba a visitar enfermos, llevar comida a los pobres y a sepultar a los difuntos. Fue ella misma quien le urgió al Papa Gregorio XI que regresara a Roma, que allá estaba su lugar. En vida dictó más de 400 cartas y dos libros. En su tiempo fue vista por todos como una gran líder. Murió a los 33 años y en 1970 Pablo VI la declaró Doctora de la Iglesia.

HÉROES DE TODOS LOS DÍAS

En la primera lectura de hoy los judíos de Antioquía recha-zan la prédica de Pablo y Bernabé, y los dos apóstoles se van a llevar su mensaje a otros lugares. Ellos se alejan del pueblo de la Antigua Alianza, sus compatriotas judíos, para invitar a los paganos del resto del mundo a que vengan a formar parte del pueblo de la Nueva Alianza. Éste es un momento crucial para los primeros cristianos. Después de sus experiencias con Jesús resucitado, los apóstoles se sin-tieron obligados a llevar la Buena Nueva de su Maestro tan lejos como les fuera posible. El intenso amor por su Señor y su deseo de hacer la voluntad de Dios los llevaría por las tierras en las riberas del Mediterráneo. Sufrieron burlas, azotes, maldiciones, encarcelamientos y naufragios. Algu-nos, incluso Pedro y Pablo, murieron mártires. Pudieras decir: “Eso fue entonces, pero hoy es otra cosa. Nunca mo-riré mártir”. Puede que no, pero el martirio no se trata nece-sariamente de una muerte física; la raíz de la palabra signi-fica “dar testimonio”. Piensa en el anciano que cuida a su esposa con Alzhéimer, los padres de un niño autista, la ma-dre soltera cuyo hijo está discapacitado. Todas estas perso-nas son mártires en cierto sentido, porque han puesto el

bienestar de otros por encima del suyo propio. Ellas dan su vida diariamente por otras perso-nas. En mayor o menor grado, esta clase de mar-tirio—el de poner a otros antes que uno—es la fibra que debe predominar en la vida de cada uno de nosotros. Cada acto de gentileza, cada palabra bondadosa, cada atención para con los demás, puede reflejar el amor de Dios a esas personas. Es decisión nuestra. Dios no exige eso de nosotros, pero nosotros podemos exigírnoslo. Demos de corazón y desinteresadamente de todo lo que Dios primero nos ha dado.

EVERYDAY HEROES In today’s first reading, the Jews of Antioch reject the preaching of Paul and Barnabas, and the two apostles leave to take their message to other places. They turn from the people of the Old Covenant, their fellow Jews, to invite the Gentiles in the rest of the world to become peo-ple of the New Covenant. This is a turning point for the first Christians. The apostles felt compelled by their ex-periences of the risen Jesus to take his Good News as far as they could. Their intense love of the Lord and their desire to do God’s will sent them on journeys throughout the lands bordering the Mediterranean Sea. They were jeered at, flogged, cursed, imprisoned, and shipwrecked. Some, including Peter and Paul, met a martyr’s death. “That was then,” you might say, “and this is now. I won’t ever be martyred.” Maybe, but martyrdom is not neces-sarily physical death; the root meaning of the word is “to witness.” Think of the elderly man caring for his wife with Alzheimer’s, the parents of an autistic child, the sin-gle mother whose teenage son is disabled. These are all martyrs in the sense that they put another’s good before their own. They lay down their life daily for someone other than them-selves. To a greater or lesser extent, this kind of martyrdom—others before self—is intended to be a thread run-ning through the lives of all of us. If we so choose, every kindness, every good word, every thoughtful deed can reflect our love of God to others. God does not demand this of us, but we can demand it of ourselves. From all that God gives us, let us give back in kind.

There are two notions that need to be taken on faith as they are presented in the Gospel passage where Jesus identifies himself as the Good Shepherd. The first mystery is that those who are given the gift of faith to hear the invitation Jesus presents, will follow him. The second mystery involves the unbreakable bond that exists between the Shepherd and the person who hears the invitation. Once a person responds to the invitation, he or she belongs to God forever. Our culture has changed since the days of our parents and grandparents when just about anyone dropped in at any time. We now call ahead and make arrangements for our children to visit friends. In comparing our own day to 50 years ago, we begin to really appreciate the invitation of Jesus to follow him, just as we are, anytime of the day or night. Where would we be if we had to call ahead to see if Jesus was available? Reach out to a family in your neighborhood this week by inviting them over for some informal fun and food. Dig out board games and snacks as you welcome them spontaneously. Keep in mind that this is how Jesus reaches out to us and let your neighbors experience God's love through your hospi-tality. Archdiocesan School of Ministry 2010-2012 Registration is now open!!

The School of Ministry forms lay men and women for active participation in their parish or ecclesial com-munity. Participants study theology, scripture and faith and human development. Traditional classes meet one night a week for tow hours for a period of two years. Classes are offered at various locations in Miami-Dade and Broward Coun-ties and are in either English, Spanish or Creole. Online classes are also available. These students take 8 online courses over a period of two years. Each online course is 5 weeks long.
