This appeal is a Diocesan-wide collaboration that supports the common services and programs that assist all 53 parishes and missions in the Diocese of San Jose. This year, the theme is Hand in Hand In Ministry. As members of Christ and his Church we are connected to one another—parishioner to paris-hioner, family to family and parish to parish. Our gifts are to be given in gratitude for what God has entrusted to us. A gift/pledge to the Annual Dioce-san Appeal will help the work of our local Church to grow and flourish through our Santa Clara County diocesan faith community. Also, when our parish reaches its goal of $137,000 in cash, 100% of addi-tional funds received will be returned to St. Joseph’s for use in our parish. Each household taking part in the campaign helps the Cathedral parish reach its goal toward funding education, training and service to the faithful of our Diocese. Please reflect upon your blessings and in gratitude, consider a pledge to the 2019 Annual Diocesan Appeal. There are pledge packets available in the vestibule for your convenien-ce if you did not receive one in the mail. Thank you.

There are two Gospels proclaimed at to-day's Mass. The first Gospel, proclaimed before the procession with palms, tells of Jesus' triumphant entrance into Jerusa-lem. Riding on a borrowed colt, Jesus was hailed by the crowds as they shouted

blessings and praise to God. Throughout Luke's Gospel we see that Jesus' words and actions proclaim the King-dom of God. Jesus appears to be in total command of events at the Passover meal as he hands over the king-dom to his disciples. He announces that this will be his last Passover until the Kingdom of God is fulfilled; however, the disciples show little understanding of this kingdom that Jesus often announces. Following the meal, they argue about who is the greatest. Jesus takes the opportunity to distinguish the meaning of leadership in the Kingdom of God from worldly leadership. Jesus initiates a conversation with Simon and predicts his de-nial. Jesus then instructs his disciples to prepare them-selves for the events that will follow. His words reveal an awareness of what all of them will face in the days ahead. As the disciples and Jesus enter the Mount of Olives, Jesus indicates the importance of the disciples' time in prayer, telling them that through prayer they will be able to face the challenges ahead. As he prays, Jesus is tested. In the garden, an angel is sent to strengthen him and to prepare him for the events ahead. After this moment, Jesus is again in charge of the events and cir-cumstances. Luke describes the Way of the Cross and Jesus' crucifixion, calling to our attention many events not reported in the other Gospels. Luke has paid heed to the women who accompanied Jesus. Now, on the road to Calvary, Jesus speaks to them. Only Luke reports Je-sus' words of forgiveness spoken from the cross. And only Luke reports the dialogue between Jesus and the good thief. Finally, in contrast with Mark and Matthew, Luke reports no words of abandonment spoken by Jesus on the cross. Instead, Jesus, in full command until his death, commends his spirit to his Father and takes his final breath. Loyola Press

S aint of the Week Blessed Peter Gonzalez 1190 - April 15, 1246 Saint Paul had a conversion experience on the road to Damascus. Many years lat-

er, the same proved true for Peter Gonzalez, who triumphantly rode his horse into the Spanish city of Astorga in the 13th century to take up an important post at the cathedral. The animal stumbled and fell, leaving Peter in the mud and onlookers amused. Humbled, Peter reevaluated his motivations—his bishop-uncle had secured the cathedral post for him—and started down a new path. He became a Dominican priest and proved to be a most effective preacher. He spent much of his time as court chaplain, and attempted to exert positive influence on the behavior of members of the court. After King Ferdinand III and his troops defeated the Moors at Cordoba, Peter was successful in restraining the soldiers from pillaging, and persuaded the king to treat the defeated Moors with compas-sion. After retiring from the court, Peter devoted the remainder of his life to preaching in northwest Spain. Having developed a special mission to Spanish and Portuguese seamen, he is considered their patron. Peter Gonzalez died in 1246 and was beatified in 1741. Reflection How often we have heard stories about some misfortune or disaster only to hear later on that it was now seen as a good thing. Not every “disaster” is truly bad in its consequences for the Lord can bring good out of what appears to be a misfortune. Such was the case for Blessed Peter. His being dumped in the mud by a falling horse turned out to be a good thing in his life.
