..thanks using/wasting lots of energy…

OBVIOUS CHP ≠ OBVIOUS
To keep all on board and happy… E 1-3
1 …Combining Heat & Power is obvious… E 4-8
2 …hence CHP plays major reduction role. E 9-10
3 EU tries, but fails to grow CHP… E 11-13
4 …as Separating Heat and Power pays E 14-19

ILLUSTRATIVE
..Combining Heat and Power is Obvious…
• Never use (fossil/RES) fuels for heating/power only
• Always cogenerate power/heat/cool/motion
• Stimulate heat/steam generation to co-produce power.
• (Re) Locate power generation near heat demand
• If possible maximize cascade and reuse of heat
• Integrate many small heat users by district heating networks, optimize scale/location of conversion
> Improves energy conversion efficiency and quality
> Saves fuel, emission, grids vs. separate generation
> Integrates well with RES and other saving options
…with different (Obvious) CHP levels per plant

Market reforms drove/drive CHP beyond the
obvious share %
Non-Obvious CHP: Reformed markets: Location/participation
stimuli; CHP for grid: bottom CO2 prices, valuable certificates,
Investment aid, exploitation support; Heat planning, DH; Ind
CHP; Cascading; Tax incentives; efficiency standards; etc.
Obvious CHP: Markets as is: Auto generation; Incidental DH
4. Beyond obvious CHP decentralises

Conflicting worldviews
• Physical/Rational
• Laws of nature
• Engineering / STEM
• Integral energy system
• Collective/long term
• Societal interest/offer
• Good Government
• Unite and Solve
• CHP! hi level principle
• Metaphysical/Emotional
• Laws of men
• Economics / Arts
• Power only/Heat only/..only
• Individual/short term
• Self interest/greed
• Populism Politics
• Divide and Rule
• CHP? Does not fit my box
Lessons from Holland
• Explain physical, integrated energy system view
• Push Energy Policy Politically– EED, Internal Energy Market, ETS, Market restructuring,…
– Provide investors security
• Improve energy economics– Market based: price emissions, networks, security…..
– Regulated: standards; cap, tax, min pricing, ……
• Execute non-market based energy policies
• Balance worldviews– Find the Middle
– Merge STEM and Arts to STEAM
Mind you! We only have One
WE LOVE LIVING ON THIS EARTH
WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT HEATING,
POWERING, COOLING IT,
AS EFFICIENT AS POSSIBLE
