Dear People of God, It is difficult to believe this is my last St. Mary of the Woods Grammar School Graduation column to be writ-ten in honor of the Class of 2010. The first column as your Pastor honoring our eighth grade graduates was written in June, 1997. Those graduates are presently 27 years old! I have already presided at several of their Wedding celebra-tions! Boy, do I feel old! I offer heartfelt congratulations to our Grammar School Graduates - Class of 2010. You are an outstanding class! You were born my last year as Associate Pastor of SMOW (1996) before beginning as Pastor on January 1, 1997. Many of our 2010 SMOW graduates were “graduating” from the crawling stage to their first steps at that time! I also extend congratulations to all our Parish 8th graders, high school seniors and college graduates. Congratula-tions! We are proud of all of you. Graduation speaks of endings - and new beginnings. New beginnings can be exciting, scary and an opportu-nity to open new doors. The key, however, is to walk with the Lord Jesus through all the doors we call life. The Spirit of God is with us. All the graduates were once little boys and girls - and how quickly the days turn into years! And to all the young people - your parents were once your age! Life is a teacher and filled with wisdom. I share with you the fol-lowing "Wisdom of the Ages."

GREAT TRUTHS ABOUT LIFE THAT LITTLE CHILDREN HAVE LEARNED:

1) No matter how hard you try, you can't baptize cats. 2) When your Mom is mad at your Dad, don't let her brush your hair. 3) If your sister hits you, don't hit her back. They always catch the second person. 4) Never ask you 3 -year old brother to hold a tomato. 5) You can't trust dogs to watch your food. 6) Don’t sneeze when someone is cutting your hair. 7) Puppies still have bad breath, even after eating a tic tac. 8) Never hold a Dust-Buster and a cat at the same time. 9) You can't hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk. 10) The best place to be when you're sad is Grandpa's lap.

GREAT TRUTHS ABOUT LIFE THAT ADULTS HAVE LEARNED:

1) Raising teenagers is like nailing Jell-O to a tree. 2) There is always a lot to be thankful for, if you take the time to look. For example, I'm sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt. 3) One reason to smile is that every seven minutes of every day, someone in an aerobics class pulls a hamstring. 4) Car sickness is the feeling you get when the monthly payment is due. 5) The best way to keep kids at home is to make a pleasant atmosphere - and let the air out of their tires. 6) Families are like fudge ... Mostly sweet, with a few nuts. 7) Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground. 8) Laughing helps. It's like jogging on the inside. 9) Middle age is when you choose your cereal for the fiber not the toy. 10) My mind not only wanders; sometimes it leaves completely. 11) If you can remain calm, you just don't have all the facts.

And I close with a prayer to all parents who have sacrificed much for their children.

A Parent's Prayer

Lord, as I live this day, please grant me the ability to laugh at my children's antics: the time to share their moments of pride: the need to praise their separate strengths:

the faith to trust their growing judgment: the patience to understand their changing moods; the virtue to forgive their disrespect, the openness to learn their ways and styles;

the ears to hear what they are saying; the tenderness to understand their broken dreams. And the wisdom to accept that their lives, as my own, are built just one day at a time.

Amen.

God’s Blessings always, Fr. Greg

Liturgical Bits & Bytes The Doxology The Eucharistic Prayer is concluded by the doxology, “through him, with him, in him,” acknowledging that all is centered in Christ Jesus. “In the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father,” reminds us that we believe in a God that is a Trinity of persons, each involved in our salvation. All receive our praise and thanksgiving.

Amen This is our response of assent, approval, agreement. It is our statement that we believe and endorse all that has gone before. We call this the “great Amen,” because, although there are many throughout the liturgy, this is the BIG ONE. This is our agreement, “so it is,” to the wonderful prayer which we call the Eucharistic Prayer. Of all the parts of the mass which are to be sung, this is the MOST important, because our response at this time is so important. It is our statement of faith and praise. It is our agreement to the whole action. Just as we offered our gifts, financial or otherwise, as a statement of our willingness to be part of this celebration and as a symbol of our willingness to be transformed with the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ, so our hearty and heartfelt “AMEN” vocally asserts this intention. THEMES OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING The Church's social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. Modern Catholic social teaching has been articulated through a tradition of papal, conciliar, and episcopal documents. The depth and richness of this tradition can be understood best through a direct reading of these documents. In these brief reflections, we highlight several of the key themes that are at the heart of our Catholic social tradition.

The summaries printed here over the past 2 months should only be a starting point for those interested in Catholic social teaching. A full understanding can only be achieved by reading the papal, conciliar, and episcopal documents that make up this rich tradition. For a copy of the complete text of Sharing Catholic Social Teaching: Challenges and directions (No. 5-281) and other social teaching documents, call 800-235-8722.

Dear People of St. Mary of the Woods, I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all of you for the wonderful send-off you gave me as I said my “Farewell Mass” here at St. Mary of the Woods on Saturday, May 22nd. I sincerely appreciated the efforts of all who contributed to the celebration; to the liturgy planners and ministers; to the art and environment committee; to those greeting and offering hospitality; and to the combined choirs who gifted us with song. I also want very much to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for your kind words, overwhelming gener-osity, words of hope and encouragement, prayers, blessings, best wishes, sharing of faith, your hugs, (did I say that?), tears of sorrow and joy, and your many letters from your heart-to-mine which deeply moved my spirit! I want you to know that I will truly miss this parish family which indeed is very special. May we, wherever God calls us, be bonded together in faith hope and love. Again, many thanks for the ways you touched my life these past 5 years. Below, please find my new address and contact information. I will begin as Pastor of St. Patrick’s in Lemont on June 15th. A SPECIAL INVITATION FROM FATHER KURT Dear Friends

A few weeks ago, I shared some homily reflections with all of you about my personal struggle with the spirit of quiet and silence in my life.

After my homily that weekend many of you shared with me your own challenges with so many distractions in your life. Some even asked if I would offer one more opportunity for a Silent Directed Retreat on the beautiful grounds of Mundelein before I leave St. Mary of the Woods for my new parish, and, I heard you!

So, please hear this as an invitation from my heart to yours. Would you consider coming away with me for a weekend to rest with God? Together, in the silence of a directed retreat, we might be surprised what we “hear.” The retreat is based on the teachings of St. Ignatius of Loyola who believed we can only hear the true voice of God when we get away from the many distractions and the noise of our lives that pull our hearts in so many direc-tions.

I have reserved some retreat rooms at the Cardinal Stritch Retreat House, a secluded space on the campus of the Seminary in Mundelein. The dates are Friday evening June 25th beginning with a light supper at 7PM until Sunday afternoon June 27th about 1:30pm.

God will be the true “Director” of this type of retreat. I will be available to focus the retreat , suggest ways for us to re-main open and committed to the silence, celebrate the Eucharist, and to have private confidential conversations for any who wish.

The cost of the retreat will be $150. This includes all of our meals and the room. The spirit of the retreat will be silence, including the meals, to help us truly hear God’s voice in our lives. Even in the silence, I have discovered both as a retreatant and as a Director, that a bonding happens for those on the retreat.

If funds are a concern, we will do our best to offer partial and full scholarships. If you are interested in this experience, I invite you to talk to others who have been on this type of retreat with me from our community before. Feel free to give me a call at the rectory—1-773-763-0206—so I may respond to any questions or concerns you might have.

Finally, the Retreat House Staff asks that I give a final list of retreatants to them one week prior to the start of the retreat. They want to make sure we are welcomed and have the proper accommodations.

Peace,

Father Kurt

Separate Second Collection next week to aid flood victims in Poland As you have probably heard recently in the news, Poland has been hit hard with severe rains causing many villages and areas to flood. Fifteen people drowned in flooding that submerged some farms and residential areas in southern Poland, and flood waters have spread toward the north of the country. Heavy rain caused damage estimated at more than $2.5 billion, forcing the evacuation of thousands of people from their homes along the Vistula River, which flows from the southern Tatra Mountains into the Baltic, and another major river, the Oder. Roads, bridges, and private homes have been flooded and destroyed. Warsaw and other surrounding cities that were flooded will have to deal with the consequences of this damage for some time to come. The Government of Poland declared Poland a disaster area. They are trying to help as much as possible, but have limited resources. PLEASE BE GENEROUS IN THIS SPECIAL COLLECTION!

Fair Trade Coffee

The Racial Social Justice Ministry will be selling Fair Trade coffee, tea and cocoa after all the Masses this weekend, June 5th and 6th. This is an opportunity for you to

make trade fairer for poor people overseas through the choices you make about what you eat, drink, and buy. Fair Trade is a new model of international trade built on right relationships between us and the people overseas who create the items we consume - relationships that re-spect human dignity, promote economic justice, and cul-tivate global solidarity. Saint Mary of the Woods is a Fair Trade Parish in that all coffee served at Saint Mary's is Fair Trade coffee. The coffee and the coffee we sell is from Equal Exchange, a part of Catholic Relief Services Fair Trade Program.

2010 National Caribbean American HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

On June 8th and June 27th, and throughout the year, PLEASE PRAY FOR THOSE INFECTED WITH AND AFFECTED BY HIV/AIDS. June 8th is Caribbean American HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. This disease has devastated the Caribbean, and this area ranks 2nd only to sub-Saharan Africa for the existing number of Per-sons Living with AIDS. In 2006 the United Na-tions estimated that 19,000 Caribbeans died of AIDS and some 250,000 were living with the vi-rus. June 27th is National HIV Testing Day. It is esti-mated that 1 out of 5 people living with HIV in the United States DO NOT KNOW that they are infected with the virus. If you DO NOT KNOW that you are infected with HIV, you could BE SPREADING IT TO OTHERS. The only way to know if you have HIV is to get tested. This day of national testing is an opportunity for people na-tionwide to learn their HIV status. The disease has NO CURE; there is NO VAC-CINE for it; and it WILL NOT GO AWAY! However, HIV/AIDS CAN BE PREVENTED. Free and confidential or anonymous testing is available in a community near you.

Father Hesburgh at 93 ESSAY IN THEOLOGY By Rev. Richard P. McBrien

On May 25t° Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., or Fa-ther Ted as he prefers to be called, will be 93 years of age. Apart from macular degeneration, which requires that everything he read to him, he is as mentally sharp as ever.

And on June 24th he will observe the 67th anniver-sary of his ordination to the priesthood in the Congrega-tion of Holy Cross.

When he was born in 1917, World War I was still raging, and when he was ordained in 1943, we were in the midst of World War II. Is there any wonder that Fa-ther Ted has devoted most of his life and all of his priest-hood to the pursuit of peace among nations?

Soon after ordination, the young Father Hesburgh asked his religious superiors for permission to serve as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy. But they had other plans for him. He was sent instead to study for a doctorate in The-ology at The Catholic University of America in Wash-ington, D.C.

Although he had excelled in his studies there, he had difficulty obtaining approval for the topic he had chosen for his doctoral dissertation: the theology of the laity. Some of the professors at CUA balked, dismissing the topic as insufficiently academic.

This was still a time, almost twenty years before the start of the Second Vatican Council in 1962, when the laity were regarded as second-class citizens in the Church. The "real" Church consisted of the hierarchy and the so-called lower clergy. Religious women and non-ordained religious men were in there somewhere, too, but only a notch or two above the laity,

There was a movement at the time known as Catholic Action. Its strength was that it found a place for the laity in the life of the Church, but only as helpers of the hier-archy. The young Father Ted Hesburgh already knew in the mid-1940s that there was much more to the role of the laity in the Church than even what Catholic Action al-lowed for.

After a bit of a struggle, and with the dogged support of his dissertation director, Paulist Father Eugene Burke, Father Hesburgh produced his theology of the laity. So popular, in fact, was the finished product that the univer-sity bookstore could not keep printed copies in stock.

Soon thereafter Father Hesburgh received a request from the Vatican for a copy of the dissertation. He sent it off to Rome, but heard nothing more about it until two decades later when he read the Second Vatican Council's Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity and recognized his ideas incorporated in the document, but without a single

footnote of attribution. It was, after all, prescient of this young priest to have

realized so early on in his ministry that priests exist for the sake of the laity, not vice versa.

When in July 2000 he received the prestigious Con-gressional Gold Medal, that had first been conferred on George Washington, President Bill Clinton noted at the award ceremony in the Capitol rotunda that, among all the honors Father Hesburgh had received in his life, "The greatest honor you'll ever wear around your neck is the collar of a priest."

Father Hesburgh readily agreed. He said at the award ceremony, and repeated on so many other occasions, that the most significant day of his life was the day of his ordination to the priesthood. For years he has made the point to his many friends and countless audiences that he will require no better epitaph than "Theodore M. Hes-burgh, priest."

Father Ted served for thirty-five years as President of the University of Notre Dame and as President Emeritus ever since. He retired in 1987, after the university's Board of Trustees had given him a five-year extension, to age 70. He considers his greatest achievements at Notre Dame to have been the transfer of governance from his own Congregation of Holy Cross to a lay board of trus-tees in 1967, and the admission of women students to the university in 1972.

In retirement, however, Father Ted remained active. He was elected to Harvard University's Board of Overse-ers-the first priest to be so honored-and in 1994, at age 77, became chair of the board for two terms.

His national stature is reflected in some sixteen U.S. presidential appointments. In addition, he was a charter member and then chair of the Civil Rights Commission.

His other accomplishments are too numerous to list here. He is simply the greatest educational leader of our time and the greatest U.S. church leader of the 20th cen-tury.

A happy 93rd birthday and 67th anniversary to Father Ted!
