Mosstowie Primary School Miltonduff, by Elgin IV30 8TY Tel: 01343 547 811 www.mosstowie.moray.sch.uk We are a rural school in Moray, Scotland with 67 pupils who like to think big! The starting point or inspiration was the video and information on the World Book Day website. The amazing prizes on offer also helped because we absolutely love books! Being smart readers we read everything on the website very carefully. We noticed key phrases kept popping up in the text and the video: The sky’s the limit Let your imaginations fly Flying high Shoot for the stars Our class (P5-P7) brainstormed and came up with lots of imaginative ideas. We were totally enthused! We got creative and decided to make our display on our football pitch, to be photographed from above. Fortunately (from an earlier visit to the local quarry) we knew a man with a drone! He liked our idea and said he’d help. After much discussion and debate we finalised our design based around the word ‘Books’, spelt out in huge letters across the football pitch. We also decided to use ‘Flying Fergus’ as the theme. We were already fans of the books - ‘flying’ was coming up a lot! Our Fergus was going to ‘fly’ through a gigantic book cover having ‘taken off’ from a massive ramp (held up by us), complete with a Scotland flag and a copy of a real Flying Fergus book in his pocket. Our class (P5-P7) brainstormed and came up with lots of imaginative ideas. We were totally enthused! We got creative and decided to make our

display on our football pitch, to be photographed from above. Fortunately (from an earlier visit to the local quarry) we knew a man with a drone!

He liked our idea and said he’d help.

After much discussion and debate we finalised our design based around the word ‘Books’, spelt out in huge letters across the football pitch. We

also decided to use ‘Flying Fergus’ as the theme. We were already fans of the books - ‘flying’ was coming up a lot! Our Fergus was going to ‘fly’

through a gigantic book cover having ‘taken off’ from a massive ramp (held up by us), complete with a Scotland flag and a copy of a real Flying

Fergus book in his pocket.

Our class split into teams:

Measuring measured

and re-measured the

size of the pitch.

Design made a detailed

scale plan on squared

paper.

Resources worked out

what materials and

items we could use and

checked sizes.

We used a vast amount of

‘resources’ - including cars,

furniture, P.E. equipment and

even a parachute! We appealed

online to parents for

tarpaulins, towels, tartan rugs

and white dustsheets (for the

World Book Day logo eyes).

The village hall lent us

big tables plus two

huge backdrops from

behind the stage.

Some of our bikes

were used on the day.

Archie was picked to

be Fergus - he is

absolutely mad keen

crazy about bikes! He’s

won downhill mountain

bike events around

Scotland and was the

obvious choice.

The whole school was

involved! Staff were

directed where to park

their cars. P1-P7 pupils

moved every single desk

and chair onto the pitch.

Everything was placed

precisely according to

the plan.

All teams worked

together brilliantly. We

were amazed how well it

worked - especially

considering that we only

saw the competition

details the week before!

We love the fact that all

pupils, staff, parents and

helpers (who were there

on the day) are all in our

display!

Photo 1 and 5 are now on

permanent display.

We’ve set them as the

background and

screensaver on our

smartboards and

computers!

We’re very proud of

what we achieved as a

team.

Now we’re writing to

the local papers and

council magazine to

show even more people

what we have done.

We hope you like our

display. We love it – and

as you now know, we also

love books!
