We acknowledge the Kuku Yalanji people, and in particular the Kubirri Warra Clan, the
Traditional Owners of the land on which our school stands and pay our respects to
Elders past, present and emerging. We recognise their custodianship and role in
caring for and maintaining Country over thousands of years.
Principal’s Message
What a year! We started 2020 with our staff and students returning from their trip to Europe and
what a fantasc experience that was for all involved. Then the pandemic COVID-19 impacted our
lives changing how we work, live and play. For the first me teachers had to prepare online
lessons for students to complete learning@home. It was certainly a me of much uncertainty and
worry for our family and friends.
Despite this as a school we have focussed on our 3 key priories: Instruconal Leadership,
Teaching Quality and Engaging Students. We have updated behaviour management processes to
align to the new Student Code of Conduct and developed a 3 Tier Intervenon and Support
Process. Our Leadership Team has been working with Dr Pete Stebbins – High Performing Teams
to look at new ways of working and improve our pracces. We have reviewed our curriculum to
ensure it aligns to Australian Curriculum and QCAA requirements.
I thank our teaching and non-teaching staff for their professionalism and commitment to being a
lifelong learner, developing new resources and persisng in difficult mes with teaching, learning
and support to ensure students were able to learn from home and prepare our Year 12 students
for the first external exams and assessment under the new QCE system.
Thank you to our parent community for helping your children to learn at home and supporng
them to reengage in the second half of the year. Our first ever Presentaon Awards Day saw us
come together as a whole school to celebrate student success and achievements. I look forward to
being able to involve our parents in 2021.
As staff we thoroughly enjoyed being able to celebrate with our Year 12 students at their Farewell
Dinner when we inially thought this would not occur.
Our Year 7-9 students had a great day out this week at the long awaited swimming carnival which
included fun events to cool down, along with the staff vs student ‘Nut Bush City Limits’ dance and
relay.
Thank you to Tamara Wolski for bringing the community together to deliver a Financial Literacy
presentaon to our Year 9 students. All students in a@endance received a voucher to Mensland to
purchase a senior shirt for 2021. Thank you to Mossman Youth Centre, Community Connect
Program, MSS Community Development, Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre, Uning Care
Finance and Mossman SHS P&C for your donaons that enabled this to happen.
I wish everyone a wonderful break. Take the me to reflect on the
year and be grateful for the work you have done for our students to
be successful.
Enjoy the holidays with your children.
Kind regards
Michelle Lyons

Term 4, Week 10
9th December 2020
On Tuesday, 1st December, our school hosted students from across
the cluster with the Year 6 Transition Day. Students from Alexandra
Bay, Julatten, Miallo, Mossman, Mount Molloy, Port Douglas, Saint
Augustine’s and Wonga Beach schools spent the day at our school
participating in a range of activities.
Once the school day started, we put them straight to work after
sorting them into their classes for 2021.
From the beginning of the day, there was lots of getting to know
each other, as students became acquainted with their new classmates
and their new teachers.
Throughout the day, students were able to experience a taste of what
to expect next year, and to participate in a series of ‘House’ morale
team building activities, after being divided into their house groups
for next year.
We came back together at lunchtime to celebrate the day with a
sausage sizzle to welcome them all to our school. During the
afternoon session, students were taken through our Agriculture plot,
and then put through their paces with a gym work out. By all
accounts, it was a successful and positive day, with lots of smiling
faces at the end of the day. The staff at Mossman High School are
looking forward to working closely with our new students and their
families in 2021.
If you have not yet enrolled for next year, please contact the school
to collect an enrolment package.

39 Students from Cerficate II in Tourism (delivered by the Career Training Instute of Australia (CTIA)) and 4 teachers ended the year
with a 4 day 3 night adventure camp for the praccal component of the course. COVID made our trip to the Gold Coast impossible so
CTIA in turn supported local businesses that have been affected by the pandemic.
First stop, a visit to Rainforest Staon for cultural encounters starng with a guided historical tour in an Army Duck, a land and water
craS, taking us through the deep rainforest. This was very excing. These craS were built by Women in the Second World War, and
they were built to last. Then we tried our hands at boomerang throwing, watched spear demonstraons and were entertained by
Indigenous dancing where some of our group were invited on stage to parcipate in the show
(saving some footage for grad). The zoo housed many Australian fauna. The huge oblivious wombat
sleeping on its back, legs up sunning its belly was my
personal favourite.
Then we headed off to Mungalli Falls Outdoor Educaonal
Centre, located in the breathtaking and prisne Southern
Highlands, Millaa Millaa. Students were challenged with a
range of team building acvies such as team obstacle
course races, mud sliding, tubing and gold panning and
many more acvies finishing with a rocking bush dance on
the last night.
On Day 4, we woke with a 4am start and bleary eyed, we
travelled 2 hours to embark Reef Magic and headed to the pontoon for snorkelling and glass
bo@om tours of our stunning Great Barrier Reef and a fantasc buffet lunch.
Thank you to all the teachers on the trip and Andrew from CTIA that not only accompanied us but
proved quite the dancer, performing a jig on the dance floor for us. Thank you to all the students for
making us proud of your parcipaon and congratulaons on the compleon of your Cerficate II in
Tourism and 4 points banked for your QCE as you enter Year 11 next year.
