Niles West High School to Participate in Moose Youth Awareness Program If you have not heard, paid attention or remember the “Story of the Moose” when you were enrolled or received your orientation, the “Moose” is a world- class Non-Profit Fraternal Organization with the Community they serve at heart. We are now extremely proud to be associated with our local high school. Kaine Osburn, Principal, Niles West High School, has agreed to participate with our Moose Youth Awareness Program. In short, some qualified and enthusiastic high school students will be trained to deliver an important message to the middle and grammar school children within our school district. They will be trained and will compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships. Since our inception we have enjoyed a positive and rewarding experience with both the Village of Morton Grove and the Morton Grove Park District. Within the last month we have contributed to the community by supporting the Second Annual Family Festival and Block Party in honor of Family Circle Magazine recognizing Morton Grove for being one of the ten best cities to raise a family. More recently, the Village and the Park District hosted a Children’s Halloween Party. Hayrides, Fun and Games, Goody Bags and a Haunted House were provided to all interested parents and their children. Upcoming events in the near future include hosting the “Santa Comes to Town” Event at our Lodge after the Christmas Parade. We are also working with the local fire department to supply our most needy families over the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays with a collection basket. We also recently sponsored our Annual Haunted Trails Outing for the children at Mooseheart in partnership with other local lodges in our Moose Legion jurisdiction. Letter from the Editor: I want to take this opportunity to thank the Women of the Moose for their efforts to make my Pilgrim Celebration a wonderful experience. I want to thank the Pilgrims

who came as far as St. Louis to honor me on that day. Special appreciation goes to Hank and June Gooris, Glenn, Jack, Don and Lenny for inspiration that goes beyond words. I can not express my gratitude enough for all who attended. In particular, my father and brothers and the final touches from the honorable Mayor of Morton Grove, Rick Krier. Happy Holidays to all. - Todd Kramer, Editor

For the Good of the Order Administrator’s Corner

Hi everyone - It looks like summer is really gone and the end of the year holiday’s are upon us. Our fish fry’s and steak dinners are going well again. Once again thank you to everyone involved in organizing those two functions and volunteer-ing their services. Thank you to Cristie Panke and her committee

who put together the Halloween party for the kids. A job well done. We had an orientation in October which was well attended. We showed a couple of videos about the current humanitarian efforts at Mooseheart and Moosehaven. I believe the new members learned a great deal about the obligations we have to those two commitments and our community service efforts. Thanks to Todd for a job well done. In November we will be having our Annual Turkey Raffle and dinner on Nov. 22, 2008. Raffle tickets are on page six. Please do not waste anytime sending in your donations as the proceeds will be earmarked for our Children’s Annual Christmas Party. If you like to have fun, come out and participate in the functions we have to offer our members at our Moose Family Center. We had a tailgate party that was enjoyed by every-one that attended. Thanks to Governor, Glenn, for cooking and to everyone who brought a dish for all to enjoy. Fraternally, Don Stewart, Administrator

Sickness & Distress

We are saddened to hear about the passing of Laura Borgard & Sandy Karnatz mom. Our prayers are with their families. Get well wishes to Eva Miller. Wecome home Big Ron.

Governor’s Corner I’d like to take this opportunity to define my role as Governor of our fine Lodge. First of all, I took on this position because of my love for our lodge, what “Moose” stands for and to do the best job I can for our membership.

In recent months, I have been confronted by some members and have also heard feedback regarding the enforcement of rules, new procedures imposed upon us by Mooseheart and the overall operations of the Lodge. I alone do not set the rules, but as Governor, I am obligated to enforce them. Our precedence should and is with the majority and we must always abide by the general laws of Moose International and the by-laws of our lodge and the Illinois Moose Association. I will state that during my tenure, I’ve had an awful lot of cooperation and support from the majority of members. I can not say enough about the members, too many to name, both men and women of the Moose that pull together, and are there when called upon to make this organization the best that it can be. My heartfelt thanks go out to all of you. It has indeed been a challenging term in office this past year and a half with many major changes and new beginnings. There are intelligent approaches to resolutions. I believe that open communication is the key. I am willing to talk to anyone that has concerns regarding the operations of this Lodge. My door is always open. I look forward to the rest of my term as Governor, the support of the entire membership, both men and women and working with the best Moose Fraternity in the country. Fraternally, Glenn Murphy, Governor

Congratulations to Tim and Michelle Kessem on the birth of their son on September 5th, 2008. Raymond Jacob, 8 lbs. 14 oz. 21 “ Congratulations to RJ and Van Ruggeri on the birth of their son and to the proud grandparents Roger and Linda Ruggeri. Cole Anthony Ruggeri Born October 1st, He weighed in at 8 lbs. 6 1/2 oz. 20" long.

Congratulations

Do not forget the less fortunate at Thanksgiving or Christmastime! The next time you stop by the Lodge, please remember to bring in a non-perishable food item, new toys or other gift items for the young or old. Cash donations are also accepted. These gifts will be delivered to the needy families in our community, so be generous and open your hearts.

Moose Organization Target Of Defamatory Statement Oct. 16th by Bill Maher on Larry King Live;

Moose International Seeks Airing of Its Response

Official Statement Released by Moose International October 17, 2008:

Political commentator/comic Bill Maher, speaking on CNN's Larry King Live on Thursday, Oct. 16, in an exchange with host Larry King about how various groups may vote in the upcoming U.S. presidential election, made a defamatory reference to "the racists down by the Moose Lodge". Following is a statement from Moose International's Department of Communications & Public Affairs, released midday Friday, Oct. 17 to the producers of Larry King Live, with the request that it be read on a Larry King Live broadcast this week or as soon as is practical:

Mr. King: On behalf of more than 1.1 million men and women of the Moose fraternal organization, we at Moose International take great offense, and seek to correct the record, in the wake of Bill Maher's gratuitous attack on Moose members as "racist" on the Larry King Live broadcast of Thursday evening, Oct. 16.

First, the Moose organization welcomes men and women of ALL ethnicities as members. Secondly and more importantly, the Moose organization not only conducts tens of millions of dollars worth of community service annually all over North America; but moreover, raises tens of millions of dollars annually to provide a home and school for children and teens in need, of ALL ethnicities, at its Mooseheart Child City and School west of Chicago. We have also, for many decades, provided full-ride college scholarships to any academically qualifying graduate of Mooseheart -- and over the last five years, fully one-third of the students receiving those scholarships have been African-American.

These are facts that Mr. Maher could have easily obtained from us--had he been interested in the truth--before voicing his smug and ignorant attack against the Moose organization on your broadcast.

We encourage anyone to learn more about our organization at www.mooseintl.org or www.mooseheart.org. Kurt Wehrmeister, Director/Communications & Public Affairs,

Moose International

I hope that everyone is enjoying the fall. We have had such great weather and the trees are really looking pretty. I love the fall!!

I would like to thank Mary Grasso and all the people who helped with our ½ Way to St. Pat’s Day Party. The food was great – thank you Jack for all of your work getting the food here and preparing the food at the party. The entertainment was fantastic!! I can hardly wait until Stephen’s Green comes back to our lodge. The turn out was stupendous!! Thanks to everyone who was involved we made $900 which we donated to Special Olympics. What a fabulous event!!

On Sunday, November 30th we are having an exciting day!! It is our Holiday Bazaar, Bake Sale and Dinner. We will be selling a variety of things at our Bazaar as well as delicious baked goods. Donations are needed for the Bazaar and Bake Sale. Please price all the items you are donating for the bazaar and bake sale. We will be having a delicious pork roast dinner the cost is $8.50 per person (children under 12 are half price). Tickets are on sale in the Social Quarters. The hours are 3PM – 5PM. You won’t want to miss this great function.

We are also welcoming Everett our Sunshine Child to our lodge on November 30th at 2:00 PM. He will be coming with his house parents and the other children who live with him in the Pennsylvania house at Mooseheart. Everett will be celebrating his 14th birthday on November 29th so we will have a birthday cake and gifts for him when they come. Please stop by and meet Everett and his friends at 2PM.

Congratulations Todd Kramer on your wonderful Pilgrim Celebration here at the lodge on October 5th. It was a great turnout, and you certainly deserve it!! Thanks for all you do for the Moose and all of your friends here at the Morton Grove Moose Lodge! I would also like to thank all of the ladies who cooked or baked for the celebration, we truly appreciate your help!

We had a Pai Gow Poker Tournament on October 18th and everyone who attended had a great time. The money we raised will go for a party we will be having for the children with special needs at the Malloy School in Morton Grove. Joni and Mary did a great job dealing, thank you both. John made some delicious burgers, thanks for your help John. To everyone who played, thanks for participating. The winners of the tournament were Ray Till,

Clark Schroeder, Cathy Neimann and Otto Waage. Congratulations and thanks for your donations!! We raised $365 for the special needs children.

Did you know the Women of the Moose have a bulletin board where we keep important and interesting information??? It is located outside the hall. Janet and her helpers keep everyone abreast of all kinds of Moose news as well as Community information. Take a moment to check out what’s new on our board.

Effective October 1st Moose International has raised their share of our annual dues to $20. This decision was based in part on their assessments not staying in tune with inflation over the years and the rising costs of caring for our children at Mooseheart and the seniors at Moosehaven. They really had no choice in the matter, if we are to continue the level of care they have appreciated for almost 100 years. The WOTM of your chapter have reluctantly decided to raise your annual dues to $25.00 which will only net your chapter $5.00 per year.

The holidays are coming up and we have to change some of our meeting dates. Our November meetings will be on Sunday, November 9th at 2PM and Tuesday, November 25th at 7:30 PM. In December our meetings will be on Wednesday, December 10th and Tuesday, December 16th at 7:30 PM. Our holiday celebration will be at the December 10th meeting. In January we will go back to our regular schedule which is the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at 7:30 PM. We love to see you, and hope you can make it to our meetings.

For the third consecutive year, the WOTM will be adopting a family to send presents to this holiday season. Anyone interested in donating or has any questions about the Holiday Adopt-a-Family Project can talk to an Officer of the WOTM or our project co-ordinator, Beth Naulty. ([email protected]) Save the dates:

January 11th – Women of the Moose Breakfast February 28th – Trivia Night

More information on these activities and others will be in the next Moose News. Fraternally yours, Moe Bryers Sr. Regent Chapter # 1329
