  • President’s Message April 2012 This year will be our 61st year operating as Morristown National Little League. The dedication throughout the years from parents, managers, coaches and board members has truly been impressive. Before the first pitch is thrown on opening day, the work the volunteers and board members of the Morristown National Little League put in to get this season ready for the kids has been extraordinary. From maintaining the Majors field (one of the finest in Northern New Jersey), to making sure the supplies are ready for the season, as well as fixing up our batting cages due to the October 29, 2011 snowstorm is just some of the jobs members of the Board have performed this off season. Organizing the tryouts and drafting kids for forty major, minor and instructional baseball and softball teams, along with making sure all of the practice fields are properly coordinated, the insurance is obtained, and the District and Williamsport rules have been followed are other items needed to be in place before the first game. The approval of the managers and coaches and the proper training and clinics along with our open house at Extra Innings and not to mention ordering all of the baseball and softball equipment, and making sure the uniforms are properly sized and color coordinated are a few more things that go into making the season great. The cleaning of the concession stands and the ordering of the food and snacks for the stands, making sure the electricity is operational, the press box is ready to go, as well as cleaning up all of the fields and the various surrounding fields are just a few more tasks needed to be completed before the first batter walks up to the plate. The hard work of the volunteers throughout the regular season, our All-Star season and Fall Ball season, along with the top coaching, managing, and instructing the children, really shows the love and great dedication to our kids and to the Morristown National Little League. I want to also note that this year we will have a new scoreboard at the Majors baseball field. I am hoping that it will remain for many years to come. The sponsors who have been so dedicated to both softball and baseball allow us to pay for expenditures such as the scoreboard and all of the uniforms and other items necessary. I encourage you all to patronize our fine sponsors for their generous dedication to our League. Thank you to the dedicated folks affiliated with Morristown National Little League. I commend you all for what you have done for the now over four hundred and eighty baseball and softball players in getting ready to enjoy this beautiful game this season. I look forward to seeing you all down at the fields. "Play ball"

  • What is Morristown National Little League?

Morristown National Little League (MNLL) is a not for profit organization serving more than 500 boys and girls annually from the Morristown & Morris Township area. MNLL provides these children a safe and fun environment to learn both baseball & softball, while also providing team play and competitive advancement. MNLL is dedicated to developing in the children of our community the ideals of hard work, good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, courage and respect for authority, their peers and themselves. MNLL annually obtains an Operating Charter from Little League Baseball, Incorporated, Williamsport, Pennsylvania. MNLL is part of New Jersey Little League District 1, Section 1. As a charted league, MNLL can only draw members from within their approved boundaries. MNLL consist of those parts of the Town of Morristown and the Township of Morris that are located to the west of Route 202. Areas to the east of Route 202 participate in the Morristown American Little League. MNLL baseball is now in its 61st year. We are open to all players 7-12 years of age (or those 6 year olds who have completed one year of Tee ball). Our Major League is open via a player draft to players age 10 through 12; Minors AAA League is open to all players 9 through 12; Minors AA (machine pitch) play is for players age 8; and Instructional A League (coach pitch) play is for age 7, or 6 year olds with Tee ball experience. Pursuant to Little League regulations, a players' "age" is determined by their actual age on April 30th of the current season (April 30, 2012). MNLL softball has operated for nearly 25 years. To maintain a competitive level of play, MNLL softball includes all eligible players from the Town of Morristown and Morris Township. We have permission from Little League International to combine there two areas for League play, which is open to all players, 7-15 years of age. Our Junior Level team is open to all players age 13 through 15; Major League play is open to all players ages 11 through 12 and Minor League play is open to all girls ages 8 through 10; an Instructional Leagues is for those age 7 through 9. For softball, players "ages" are determined by their actual age on December 31st of the previous season (Dec. 31, 2011) This program is an all-volunteer organization for the benefit of your children and any input you can give is greatly appreciated by all! If interested in volunteering for the 2012 season, contact a Board Member. Annually, MNLL conducts background check(s) for all volunteers, which may include a review of sex offender registries, child abuse and criminal history records. Any conviction or guilty plea excludes a volunteer or hired worker from participating in Little League. Any other convictions or guilty pleas that the Board determines is not in the best interest of a child (such as drugs, assault, etc.) may also be cause for exclusion. Additionally, all managers and coaches must be certified in the Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. (Sports Awareness for Educating Today's Youth) safety training course. GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS:

All MNLL Board Members meet the second Tuesday night of every month (excluding August and December). Meetings are held @ 8:00pm at the Morristown Fire Department, 65 Speedwell Avenue (3rd floor). Purpose of the meeting is to discuss and plan our season and the program for the players. The public is welcome to attend and we appreciate your involvement.

  • LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL

The Little League was founded in 1939, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania by Carl Stotz. That first year there were three teams. Since that time, Little League has grown to become the largest baseball program in the world. It is the only sports program to be voted Federal incorporation by the congress of the United States, yet retain its independent identity through the sole sponsorship of the Little League Foundation.

The values of Little League Baseball are many, with the balanced development of the child as the ultimate goal. Through Little League, youngsters develop and appreciate the need for teamwork, sportsmanship, and unselfish cooperation – disciplines to be treasured a lifetime.

The parent in Little League is obligated to learn and understand the basics of local league operation. From beginning to end, MNLL is strictly a volunteer effort. Concerned, dedicated individuals donate their time, service and often personal funds, to maintain an exemplary program where our children can develop into young adults.

No parent should ever turn over a child to the local Little League without feeling a sense of responsibility and participation. An obligation of involvement must be recognized and fulfilled. The pleasure of participating in Little League, at any level, speaks for itself as a proud asset to any community. So – considered taking an active part in your child's life and volunteer to help out in 2012.

MNLL - Parental Code of Conduct

To maintain the positive, fulfilling atmosphere we have grown to love and expect in Morristown National Little League, the Board of Directors requires all parents to read, understand and adhere to the following:

As a parent of Morristown National Little League, baseball & softball, I will:

    • Provide positive support, care, and encouragement for my child participating in the league; • Encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support for all players, managers,

coaches, and officials at every game, practice or other league event; • Place the emotional and physical well-being of my child ahead of my personal desire for him or

her to win; • Insist that my child play in a safe and healthy environment; • Support managers, coaches, and officials working with my child, in order to create a positive and

enjoyable experience for all; • Remember that the game is first and foremost for the children, not the adults; • Do my best to make youth sports fun for my child; • Ask my child to treat other players, managers, coaches, officials and fans with respect

regardless of race, creed or ability. • Help my child enjoy his/her Little League experience by doing whatever I can to be a positive

role model, such as being a respectful fan, and helping the managers and coaches with administrative duties.

I realize that if I abide by these guidelines, the MNLL experience will be more rewarding and enjoyable for all people involved. The Board of Directors reserves the right to take appropriate actions, as seen fit by the Board, to discipline, suspend, or remove members whose conduct is considered detrimental to the best interest of the MNLL or Little League Baseball.

  • Roberto's Kids Equipment Collection

MNLL is proud to support a very worthwhile charitable cause that is being spearheaded locally by one of our own MNLL families. This season we are, again, partnering with Roberto's Kids Organization, www.robertos-kids.org, to collect new and gently used baseball equipment to donate to kids in the United States, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Mexico. Roberto's Kids™ is a not for profit organization founded by the family of the late Roberto Clemente, with the support of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Roberto's Kids Equipment Collection - As the spring season approaches, many of you have discovered that your children have outgrown their equipment. What we are collecting: Gently worn / used or new Gloves, bats, balls, catchers' equipment, helmets, cleats and sneakers, uniforms, hats and socks. When: Collection tables will be set up at Burnham on Opening Day. Additional collections will be held during our Inter-league Community Day, May 19th. If you have any questions about the collection, please contact the Budisak Family at [email protected] or visit www.robertos-kids.org for further information on this charitable organization.

Challenger League Opening Day - Sunday April 15th, 2011

Again this year Morristown National will host Opening Day for the Morris County Challenger League (MCCLL) at Burnham Park. In past years our days with MCCLL have been covered by the Daily Record and Channel 2.

    • First Games start at 2:00pm, Sunday, April 15th, 2012 at Burnham Park. • Closer games start at 4:00pm

This organization (www.mccll.org) offers a great experience for handicapped kids of all ages and levels of ability and if you haven't seen--or participated in--one of these events you are missing something truly special. The kids have CP, varying levels of autism, muscular dystrophy, and other serious challenges but you'd never know if from their attitudes.

The MCCLL has four teams--two of them are younger kids and two with age 11-teen-age kids. Most importantly, the event works ONLY because the host league (that's us!) supplies a large number of its league players as volunteer "buddies" who shepherd the Challenger League kids through the game. We usually get a good mix of our softball and baseball players, though sometimes we're a bit short on numbers--we really need at least 30 per game--and there are two concurrent games.

The first games — @ 2 PM — will match the Challenger teams against each other. You will never forget the sight of a kid in a wheelchair hitting a ball and being pushed around the bases (sometimes on one wheel!) by one of our player Buddies. The second games--closer to 4:00 PM-- on each field match the most able of the Challenger kids against teams composed our players who are handicapped by some special rules to even things out. Let's just say our kids have never won one of these games!

Our players who have done this never forget it. Many have done it 2 or more times and look forward to the opportunity. It's a great way to help remind us how lucky we are and help some who haven't been as fortunate. Game details:

    • 2PM Morristown National = TB Mets vs. Athletics • 2PM Morristown National = Pirates vs. Red Sox • 4PM Morristown National = Mets vs. Buddies • 4PM Morristown National = Yankees vs. Buddies

Thank you and see you on Sunday, April 15th 2012 for a wonderful day.

As a reminder to the retuning families and as an introduction to our new families, the concession stands are run as a convenience (where else could you easily pick up a bottle of water or Powerade for you player when they "forgot" theirs, or even feed your family on a game night). The stands also serve as a FUNDRAISER for the League. The stands help to defray league expenses for uniform and equipment needs, field supplies and other necessary items to keep the players playing.

"The Upper Deck", Burnham Park (Baseball)

The Upper Deck concession stand cannot function without Volunteers. We know that people are busy, but we ask that everyone do their small part to keep the league running smoothly. Each Majors team will be responsible to provide volunteers to work the concession stand during all their Home Games. A minimum of 2-4 volunteers are needed for about 2-3 hours each time. So, be sure to sign-up and show up in support of MNLL. Believe it or not – it is a lot of fun!

    Veteran’s Field (Softball)

The concession stand at Veteran’s Field cannot function without Volunteers. We know that people are busy, but we ask that everyone do their small part to keep the league running smoothly. Each home team will be responsible to provide volunteers to work the concession stand during all their Home Games at Veteran’s Field. Two volunteers are needed for about two hours each time. So, be sure to sign-up and show up in support of MNLL Softball.

Veteran’s Field snack stand has heat, shade, comfortable chairs, and clean bathrooms. MNLL Softball hires a company to clean the bathrooms throughout the year (Regular season, All-Stars, and Fall Ball). So if you want to stay out of the sun, the rain, the cold (maybe not this year), and watch the game, this is the spot for you.

  • IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT ALL-STARS!

As part of Little League, MNLL baseball fields All-Star teams at certain levels/ages to compete in LL-sanctioned tournaments. Most of you are familiar with the Little League World Series, which is a 12-year old tournament that is televised from Williamsport, PA every August. In addition to a 12-year All-Star team, MNLL also participates in an 11-year old and a 10-year old All-Star tournament that end at the State Level (i.e. State Champion). MNLL also participates in non-Williamsport sponsored tournaments (e.g. Rockaway, 9-yr old Mendham) after the regular season and playoffs.

MNLL softball fields 3 Little League All-Star teams: Juniors (players 13-14), Majors (players 11 and 12) and Minors (players 9 and 10). The more you win the farther you go. Each All-Star team is guaranteed 3 games.

Williamsport Tournament All-Star teams entail a significant commitment on each family's part. The practice schedule is more rigorous than non-Williamsport tournament teams (often seven days a week until tournament play begins). Family Vacations the end of June through July are not recommended.

Every LL team participating in the Williamsport tournament must complete an affidavit.

    • All Williamsport Team participants MUST supply the following minimum information at the first practice following team selection:

o Original Birth Certificate with raised seal and one copy (originals will be returned after leagues affidavit is approved, copy will stay with manager)

o Documents to support Full residence eligibility requirements (see Residence Eligibility Requirements on website, summary provided below)

    • All MNLL Managers & Coaches should visit the NJ District One website to read the complete rules, requirements, details, etc...

    • The teams are competitive and difficult to make. The managers will be selecting the teams based on input from regular season coaches, observing the players throughout the year, and a potential try out session. A try-out is at the discretion of the All-Star team manager.

Residence Eligibility Requirements Each local Little League determines the actual geographic boundaries of the area from within which it shall select players. These boundaries must be described in detail and shown on a map and dated when making application for a Little League charter. Players will be eligible to play with that league only if they reside within the boundaries provided to and approved by Little League Baseball, Incorporated. A player will be deemed to reside within the league boundaries if: A. His/her parents are living together and are residing within such league boundaries, OR; B. Either of the player’s parents (or his/her court-appointed legal guardian) reside within such boundaries. Residence shall be established and supported by documents from THREE OR MORE of the following categories to determine residency of such parent(s) or guardian: 1. Driver’s License 2. Voter’s Registration 3. School records 4. Welfare/child care records 5. Federal records 6. State records 7. Local (municipal) records

    8. Support payment records 9. Homeowner or tenant records 10. Utility bills (i.e., gas, electric, water/sewer, phone, mobile phone, heating, waste disposal) 11. Financial (loan, credit, investments, etc.) records 12. Insurance documents

    13. Medical records 14. Military records 15. Internet, cable or satellite records 16. Vehicle records 17. Employment records

Note: Example – Three utility bills (three items from No. 10 above) constitute only ONE document.

  • Safety is the Most Important Consideration

Little League Baseball has one of the best records of safety and protection of any youth athletic program in the world. Improvements in safety practices from continuing studies, application of rigid standard in equipment and the adoption of rules and regulations gained from years of experience are utilized to protect our young athletes. However, as an active sport, residual risk is an inherent part of the game and everyone (players, coaches, fans) should pay attention at all times to minimize injury.

Parents may be assured their children utilize the best and safest equipment available, as required by Little League regulations. Administrative training through Little League Baseball, as well as clinics and training programs that stress safety creates an atmosphere of concern and safety-consciousness for our volunteers and coaches.

What Parents Should Know About Little League Insurance

Morristown National Little League (MNLL) provides a general accident and health, and dental insurance program for all registered participants in MNLL. Registered participants will be covered for losses incurred while: (1) participating in all scheduled, sponsored, and supervised activities of the league and (2) during district direct travel to and from such activity. The overall aggregate limit of indemnity is $ 5,000,000. Accident Medical Expense Benefit has a $ 0.00 deductible, a $ 100 % co-insurance, and a $ 100,000 aggregate maximum benefit.

THIS COVERAGE IS PAYABLE ONLY IN EXCEES OF ANY EXPENSES PAYABLE BY OTHER VALID AND COLLCTIBLE INSURANCE. MNLL, not the parent, pays for this insurance program. It must not be inferred that a parent who contributes to the support of the league is paying for an insurance policy on the youngster. The policy is another service offered by MNLL.

This program makes it possible for MNLL to offer unmatched, low-cost protection with assurance to parents that adequate coverage is in forces at all times during the season.

If your child sustains an injury covered by the MNLL policy while taking part in Little League Baseball, here is how it works:

    • Your child’s coach will complete an accident report and file it with the MNLL Safety Officer. • Parent should file an initial claim under insurance carried by your family • Should your family insurance plan not fully cover the injury treatment,, the MNLL policy will help

pay the difference up to the stated maximum benefits. This includes any deductible or exclusions in your own insurance plan.

    • If your child is not covered by any family insurance plan, the MNLL policy will provide benefits for all covered injury treatment costs up to the maximum benefits of each policy.

We trust that this brief summary is helpful in understanding the important aspect of the Morristown National Little League insurance program. THE POLICY PROVISIONS OF THE CONTRACT DETERMINE THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THE ACTUAL COVERAGE.
