D i s t r i c t L i n e . The G u i l d s c a r r i a g e l e f t S o u t h Kens-
- i n g t o n f u r n i s h e d w i t h a w e i g h i n g machine f o r t h e
amusement o f i t s o c c u p a n t s . A c q u i r e d from S o u t h

Towards t h e c l o s e o f t h e engagement when many
M i n e r s had d e c i d e d t o r e t i r e , a scrummage o f
G u i l d s m e n were l e f t f i g h t i n g each o t h e r l A r m i s t i c e
p r o c e e d i n g s were c o n d u c t e d i n a f r i e n d l y s p i r i t ,
and b o t h s i d e s s a n g compliments t o each o t h e r i n
p l e a s a n t f a s h i o n .
T h a t was t h e f i n a l e t o t h e m a j o r r a g g i n g o f t h a
day. The P r e s i d e n t s warned t h e i r f l o c k s t h a t t h e
c o n s t a b u l a r y d i s a p p r o v e d o f abnormal t r a v e l by
t u b e and t h r e a t e n e d t o t a k e a c t i o n i n t h e e v e n t
o f a rowdy r e t u r n J o u r n e y . The s p e c t a t o r s were

D u r i n g h i s l a s t y e a r h e became d i s t i n g u i s h e d , he
was made a p r e f e c t .

He was commissioned i n R.E.M.E. and p o s t e d t o
f o r e i g n p a r t s - H o n i t o n , Devon, d u r i n g t h i s e x i l e
he t u r n e d r e c r u i t s i n t o s o l d i e r s i n t h e s p a c e o f
s i x .weeks.
H i s e n t r y i n t o t h e M i n e s was q u i e t . He s t i l l
d i s t i n g u i s h e s h i m s e l f a s b e i n g a M i n e r whose b e s t
t i m e f o r t h e Yard' i s n o t l e s s t h a n 25 s e e s . He
hopes w i t h p r a c t i s e t o i m p r o v e on t h i s . As a
F r e s h m a n he p l a y e d f o o t b a l l f o r t h e R.S.M. b u t
l a t e r f u l f i l l e d a c h i l d h o o d d e s i r e t o p l a y w i t h
w a t e r when he j o i n e d t h e B o a t C l u b . L a s t y e a r
he won our a d m i r a t i o n b y r o w i n g i n t h e Morphy orew
a f t e r o n l y a month's e x p e r i e n c e and l a t e r s t r o k i n g
a n e i g h t w h i c h became known a s t h e " F l y i n g F i f t h "
renowned f o r i t s r a o i n g a b i l i t y and h i g h r a t e o f
s t r i k i n g .
T h i s summer he v e n t u r e d a b r o a d t o mine and
p r o s p e c t x n Canada. He now t a l k s l o q u a c i o u s l y o f
h i s e x p e r i e n c e s and hopes t o r e t u r n .

T h i s y e a r i t i s p l e a s a n t t o r e c o r d t h a t t h e
a c t u a l f o o d was c o n c i d e r a b l y b e t t e r t h a n on c e r t a i n
p r e v i o u s o c o a s i o n s w h i c h added g r e a t l y t o t h e e n j o y -
ment o f t h e e v e n i n g .
T h r o u g h o u t t h e p r o c e e d i n g s t h e b e e r f l o w e d
f r e e l y , i f n o t f r e e , b e i n g b r o u g h t up f r o m t h e b a r
by a s t e a d y f e r r y s e r v i c e , w h i c h grew s l i g h t l y l e s s
s t e a d y a s t h e e v e n i n g wore on. Th e r e was, however,
a • s u s p i c i o n t h a t c e r t a i n members o f t h e company
had b e e n c o n s u m i n g b e e r , and even Merrydown,' b e f o r e
t h e d i n n e r i t s e l f s t a r t e d . B u t , i f t h e o c c a s i o n a l
t a b l e mat d i d c u r v e g r a c e f u l l y t h r o u g h t h e a i r s u c h
phenomena have b e e n o b s e r v e d on c o n s i d e r a b l y more
f o r m a l o c c a s i o n s . . .
The s p e e c h e s were good, t h o u g h p e r h a p s n o t a b l e
f o r t h e f a c t t h a t t h e y c o n t a i n e d o n l y t h r e e s t o n e s ,
one o f w h i c h i s r e p e a t a b l e i n ( a l m o s t ) any company,
and i t i s ' p r o b a b l y some t i m e s i n c e t h e B o a t C l u b
were l a s t c o l l e c t i v e l y r e f e r r e d t o a s "my d e a r s " .
A f t e r t h e d i n n e r t h e company r e t i r e d b y t h e
c o n v e n t i o n a l s t a g e s t o t h e b a r , t h e e n t r a n c e h a l l ,
t h e t e n n i s c o u r t s and t h e h o s t e l , where t h e e v e n i n g
drew more o r l e s s p e a c e f u l l y t o a c l o s e .
Guest s p e a k e r s were i n v i t f c f d from '^ueen Mary
C o l l e g e on Tuesday 1 6 t h . Nov. t o oppose t h e
m o t i o n t h a t :

T h i s debate was c h a r a c t e r i z e d by t h e u s u a l
a p a t h y Trom t h e f l o o r .
M i s s Osborne, who proposed t h e m o t i o n ,
f r u s t r a t e d t h e h o p e f u l from t h e s t a r t by r e f u s i n g
to g i v e any example o f what t h e A c t r e s s i s a c t u a l l y
supposed t o have s a i d t o t h e B i s h o p . She waa c o n -
v i n c e d t h a t t h e whole a f f a i r was due t o Punch i n
i t s heaviour-humoured d a y s . Her c o n t e n t i o n t h a t
a l l a c t r e s s e s a r e n i c e g i r l s a t h e a r t , and t h e r e -
f o r e can s a y n o t h i n g mmch t o anyone, out o f p l a c e ,
was g r e e t e d w i t h doubt from t h e f l o i r .
Mr. McCormick, P r e s i d e n t o f t n e U.L. L i b e r a l
S o c i e t y , opposed t h e m o t i o n . He f i r s t e x p r e s s e d
h i s d e l i g h t a t f i n d i n g t h a t we were n o t W e s t f i e l d ,
as he had been l e d t o b e l i e v e ; and t h e n p r o c e e d e d
w i t h h i s a t t a c k , i t s main o b j e c t b e i n g t o p r o v e
t h a t as women a r e i n t h e ascendancy, and t h e p e o p l e
on t o p may say what t h e y p l e a s e , t h e r e i s e v e r y
l i k e l e h o o d t h a t t h e A c t r e s s e x p r e s s e d h e r s e l f

The o p p o s i t i o n t h e n r o a r e d home on wheels

g u e s t from Q.M.C. He was c o n v i n c e d t h a t t h e Ac-
t r e s s and t h e B i s h o p were "on t h e r i g h t r o a d " ;
and he was s u r e t h a t t h e house w i t h i t s " t r u e
l i b e r a l s p i r i t " , would a g r e e . "No smoke w i t h -

The one p o i n t on whioh h i s s m a l l s e c t i o n o f t h e
l i b e r a l p a r t y were a g r e e d , was t h a t i n t e r c o u r s e
between A and B was t o be encouraged. He hoped
t o l i v e t o see t h e t r a n s f e r e n c e o f Aunt Agony's
column t o t h e P a r i s h Magazine, w i t h eminent B i s h -

c y c l i n g accident of B.A.Cox (C & G) on Wednesday
Nov.10th. Tony Cox was educated at Berkhamsted
School. A f t e r two years i n the army as a National
Serviceman he came to Guilds i n 1952. He was a
keen supporter of Guilds Motor.Club. Those who
knew him best w i l l miss a charming companion and
a cheerful f r i e n d .

L a s t t e r m a committee was s e t up t o t r y and
h e l p t h e o v e r s e a s s t u d e n t t o s e t t l e down q u i c k l y
i n t o t h e E n g l i s h s t u d e n t way o f l i f e . An a t t e m p t
•was made t o p r o v i d e t e m p o r a r y a c c o m o d a t i o n w i t h
some p a t e n t s o f I.C. s t u d e n t s who l i v e i n o r a r o u n d
London. As a r e s u l t s e v e n t e e n .overseas s t u d e n t s
were helped i n t h i s way a l t h o u g h many more had to
be refused beoause of the l a c k o f response. I t '
i s appreciated that not everyone i s i n a p o s i t i o n .
to help i n t h i s very p r a c t i c a l way and thanks are
due to the people who d i d o f f e r .
Another part of the committee's work i s to',
organise t r i p s to Oxford and Cambridge. Recently
two bus loads of students were shown around the
many places o f i n t e r e s t i n Cambridge by members
of. the C h r i s t i a n Union there.
Something i s being done but r e a l friendship's
cannot be o f f e r e d by a committee a o t i n g on behalf
of the students but by each s t u d e n t himself
attempting to b e f r i e n d and h e l p o u r c o l l e a g u e s . -
from abroad; so t h a t t h e i r s t a y h e r e may not ,
only be p r o f i t a b l e from t h e academic viewpoint '••
.but a l s o from t n e much more i m p o r t a n t one of
