Dear Parish Family; Happy New Year! I am preparing to undertake a silent retreat as I write this article. For the month of January and into early February I will be making the Exercises of St. Ignatius in Gloucester, MA. I would like to invite you all to join me in prayer during the month of January. Jesuit missionaries in the early days did not have the benefit of living in community supported by the daily round of monastic prayer. Instead they committed to practice the Ignatian Examen each evening. The Daily Examen is a contemplative prayer led by memory. During an Examen, we reflect on the day that is past, focusing on memories from the events of the day as a way of recognizing the Divine Presence and tracking the paths of the Spirit. The Examen awakens us to the Divine in ordinary moments and illustrates the subtle and surprising ways God speaks. Through rising awareness, this prayer practice helps cultivate and refine discernment of God’s call in our life. God’s Spirit moves through our lives in consolations and desolations. A consolation is an experience you remember as feelings of full aliveness, peace, joy, happiness, comfort, wholeness, connection, being your best self –you interpret as being close to God. A desolation is an experience you remember as feelings of listlessness, frustration, irritation, sadness, isolation, fragmentation, ostracization, your weaker self – you interpret as being farther away from God. St. Ignatius’ Examen has Five Steps

1. Open yourself to awareness of the Divine. 2. Review the day in a posture of gratitude. 3. Recognize a “Consolation” and a “Desolation” from the day. 4. Choose a “Consolation” and give thanks, Choose a “Desolation” to pray into. 5. Look with hope for new tomorrow.

The tricky thing about desolation is that even though it is an uncomfortable and sometimes distressing experience and we may feel as if God is far away, God is still very near. So the gift is praying with the desolation, telling God about your experience and asking for God’s grace in the experience. God shows up and speaks to us in desolations AND consolations. I will be praying for you during my absence. Peace, Mary

A Deacon’s Journey 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here! Last month I finally got some new glasses, and I was shocked at how much my eyes had changed, and how clear things now appeared. I could see things in the distance that I wasn’t even aware of before, and I found I didn’t have to take my glasses off to read things up close! No more squinting and head-bobbing to catch the right bifo-cal lens! I knew it had been a long time since I had a new prescription, but I was vividly aware of how much my vision had improved. The whole experience made me wonder about seeing things anew in a New Year. I began to think about goals for the New Year, and I struggled with adding new things to my already very full plate. I had ended 2019 utterly and completely exhausted - extremely busy, yet very empty. Where could I possibly fit in one more thing? Society’s pressure to change bad habits or make elaborate resolu-tions at the start of a year is looked upon as a good thing. It is, after all, a new year, a new decade, a new chapter in all our lives. But as I thought more about the concept of “newness” I realized that “new” doesn’t have to mean add-ing more to my responsibilities. What if “new” could be done in place of “old?” What if I let go of “old” so that “new” could enter? What would this look like in my daily life? How could I see the old things anew? I began to look for new ways of doing old things. What if I parked in a new place at the grocery store, or sat in a different pew in church? What if I sought out new faces in the crowd or spoke to a new person in line? What if I looked at familiar people with new eyes, and really paid attention to them? How might this make the New Year and the new decade the very best it could be? As we head into 2020, let’s remember Jesus’ commandment, to love God, love others, and love our-selves. And may the next chapter of your life be filled with the blessing of all things new. Amen - Rev. Chris Galagan

Vestry Update: Dream No Small Dreams!

Your Vestry has been discerning the Spirit’s movement among us this year. This dis-cernment has led us in three areas of dreaming for the future of Christ Church.

We dream of: • A Young Adult Episcopal Service Corps Program in Cody beginning 2021 • Education and Office Space Renovation beginning summer 2020 • Offering the hospitality of our Mission House on 8th Street by summer 2020 All these dreams require the prayers, gifts, and talents of all of us. These dreams call for developing multiple funding sources. These dreams will lead us into God’s future of promise for the people of Christ Church and for the world in which we live. The Vestry hopes you will become as enthusiastic as we are for the fulfilling of these dreams. The Vestry invites you to accompany them on this journey and learn more about this work leading up to and including at our Annual Meeting on February 9th, the 26th anniversary of our rector’s or-dination to the priesthood. • January 26th Mission Hearing at 9:00 and 11:15 in the Library. • February 2nd Budget Hearing at 9:00 and 11:15 in the Nave. • February 9th Annual Meeting 11:15 in the Parish Hall, lunch provided by the vestry. If you would like to talk to a Vestry member about these exciting works, please do not hesitate to call any of us, The Rev. Mary Caucutt, Wallace Johnson, Stan Strike, Peggy Rohrbach, Andy Rose, Liz Fabrizio, Louis Kousoulos, The Rev. Douglas Sunderland, Ryan Cowger, Sara Murray, Abi Hu, or Cheryl Ajax.

KIDS’ CORNER January 2020! Sunday, January 5: Godly Play, The Red Box, Tiffani & Solie Jackson after communion: Rite 13 Monday, January 6: Epiphany! The Three Kings arrive!! Sunday, January 12: Godly Play, Epiphany, Tiffani & Solie Jackson Lots going on in the Parish Hall after our service today! Sunday, January 19: Godly Play, Holy Baptism Sunday, January 26: Children’s Chapel in Poker Church, Nancy TBA: Rite 13, J2A, and YAC meetings in January. Stay tuned for e-mails from your youth leaders! Ideas for January: What to do with all that old Christmas wrap. Learn origami? Write thank you notes

on the back? Make Christmas cards for next year? Clean out your closet. Give the stuff that no longer fits to friends or the Bargain Box. Make one really good resolution: is there one thing you could do to make your world better? Take a family walk after dark. Can you learn the name of a constellation? Orion is pretty easy to find

this time of year. Grab your stale Christmas baked goods. Spread some peanut butter on them and hang them on the

trees for hungry, cold birds. Take a day. Be a goat. Just have some kid fun ALL DAY LONG! Could you spread some light in the world? Check all your flashlights to make sure batteries work.

Maybe you should check your smoke alarms too. Make something nice for your neighbor. Cheer them up with a surprise on their doorstep. Look through your old socks. Throw out the ones with holes in the toes. Can you make some jazzy

new pairings with what’s left? Check out your pile of board and card games. Is there one that you’ve never played or would like to

play again? Round up your family for one game after dinner on a night without homework. Hug Day! Give your family ELEVEN hugs today! Pets may be included. Celebrate the 3 Kings. Make some travel plans for this summer and sing “We Three Kings of Orient

Are”. No exploding cigars, please.

20/20 usually means vision with perfect clarity. Maybe it can mean that for this year too. Try to see where it is that you best fit into God’s world. What are you supposed to be doing with that abundance of gifts and talents that is you and only you? Have a wonderful January. YOU are the star we see this time of year! Hugs & blessings, Nancy
