Weekly Wisdom
From Egypt to Sinai – Session SevenMoses is the mediator of the fourth covenant. God called Moses to be the promised deliverer, to free His people from slavery in Egypt. When Pharaoh refuses to set the Israelites free, God unleashes His judgment on Pharaoh and the Egyptian gods with the plagues. Moses’ journey continues with the celebration of the Passover and leading the Israelites into the wilderness. It is at the foot of Mt. Sinai that God binds Himself to His people and gives them His law.

PASTORAL CARE MINISTRY: The Pastoral Care Ministry is inviting parishioners to join this important ministry in caring for the sick and elderly of our parish. “CREATION CARE CORNER”By now, the critical state of our Earth and the urgency that
action must be taken soon, is quite well known. A couple of examples which greatly affect us here in Hampton Roads are flooding and offshore drilling. The Union of Concerned Scientists’, Summer 2018 Magazine, indicates that the frequency of flooding will be enough to prompt changes in property values (if it has not already done this). Communities need to attend to investing in flood-proofing measures, such as seawalls, which can be costly to build and maintain. The prediction is that in some areas the risk is so high that “the best worst option is retreating.” Coastal dwellers whose homes are unaffected by flooding will also suffer. Their property taxes could increase to compensate for an eroding tax base. Services could be cut and infrastructure could be neglected. These are not abstract concerns. The authors of the Underwater Report, June 2018, found that, in roughly 120 communities along our coasts, 20% of the local tax base comes from properties at the highest risk for chronic flooding.
Our president has already given permission for oil companies to drill off our shores. We may be familiar with the disadvantages of this procedure. Offshore drilling can be dangerous and damaging to the environment. It can create a large death zone for marine creatures in the sea, which will have a bearing on our food chain. Pollution, caused by the offshore rigs, will affect the shoreline. Huge amounts of carbon emissions will occur. Tourism, which is a major contributor to our economy, will be impacted.
We as individuals are not deprived of the power to prevent these and other projects, which can destroy our environment. Elections will be held this November. We can, and must, exercise our right to vote for delegates who will listen to our voices and protect where we live and take action to reduce climate change.
