MORNING NEWS CALL - INDIA EDITION May 3, 2017

The Indian rupee is likely to rise against the dollar in early trade, in line with gains in regional peers, amid broad weakness in the greenback ahead of the conclusion of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s two-day policy meet later today. -NewsRise Indian government bonds are likely to trade steady ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decision, due later today. The yield on the benchmark 6.97 pct bond maturing in 2026 is likely to trade in a 6.96 pct - 7.01 pct band today. -NewsRise Wall Street edged higher on Tuesday as gains for the tech and industrial sectors countered weakness in auto and energy stocks and investors digested a heavy day of earnings reports. Asian stocks followed global indexes higher, as strong earnings and manufacturing data boosted risk appetite, while expectations that the Federal Reserve will signal a June rate increase later in the session lifted the dollar. The dollar traded below a six-week high against the yen, as the market awaited the Federal Reserve's policy statement for hints on the U.S. interest rate outlook, while the kiwi rose on the back of higher dairy prices. U.S. Treasury prices gained on Tuesday after weak auto sales raised concerns about the strength of consumer spending, and as investors awaited the conclusion of the Federal Reserve’s two-day meeting on Wednesday. Crude oil prices bounced back as a decline in U.S. inventories underpinned the market, although a dip in compliance with OPEC efforts to reduce output and near record supplies capped gains. Gold held near a three-week low hit in the previous session on rising equities and a firmer dollar as markets waited for cues on an U.S. interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve later in the day.
