 Advent Reading

God’s Promise: The Greatest Proof of All

8/10/2019 Morning Gathering - December 7, 2014

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/morning-gathering-december-7-2014 14/36

Last week we lit the first advent candle. We

were reminded of the message of hope to astruggling nation, the hope of Jesus our Savior.

This week we light the second advent candle,

and see God’s promise, the greatest proof of all.

Isaiah 7:10-14 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, “Ask a sign of the

Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as

heaven.” But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will

not put the Lord to the test.”$ And he said, “Hearthen, O house of David! Is it too little for you to

weary men, that you weary my God also?

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign.

Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,

and shall call his name Immanuel.

8/10/2019 Morning Gathering - December 7, 2014

God sent the prophet Isaiah to Ahaz to calm his

fears of attack and he told Ahaz not to worry;

God would protect him. Ahaz was afraid to askGod for a sign, but God wanted to give him a

sign. So God spoke through Isaiah and gave

 Ahaz the greatest sign that has ever been given.

 Ahaz had no idea what the sign meant, but

today we know that the virgin Isaiah spoke of

was Mary and her Son was Jesus, Immanuel,God with us. God was giving the greatest sign,

that He was who he said he was. Jesus proved

that he was God when after dying on the cross,

he rose again from the dead, just as he said.

 As we rejoice in the fulfilled promised of God;

we wait with assured hope for the promises ofGod to be completed, and for Christ to come

again.

Come to earth to taste our sadness He whose glories knew no end;

By His life He brings us gladness

Our Redeemer, Shepherd, Friend. Leaving riches without number

born within a cattle stall;

This the everlasting wonder, Christ was born the Lord of all.

Rock of Ages, cleft for me

Let me hide myself in Thee

Let the water and the blood From Thy wounded side which flowed

Be of sin the double cure

Save from wrath and make me pure

 All the labors of my hands

Could not meet Thy law’s demands

Could my zeal no respite know Could my tears forever flow

 All for sin could not atone

Thou must save, and Thou alone

Nothing in my hands I bring

Simply to Thy cross I cling

Naked come to Thee for dress Helpless, look to Thee for grace

To Thy fountain, Lord, I fly

Wash me Savior or I die

While I draw this fleeting breath When my eyes shall close in death

When I soar to worlds unknown

See Thee on Thy judgment throne

Rock of Ages, cleft for me

Let me hide myself in Thee
