Life Skills Lessons for Budgets
Perth Hills Discovery Centre The Perth Hills Discovery
Centre is located approxi-
mately 1 hour east of Mor-
ley Senior High School in
an area known as the
‘hills’. The Hills are small
mountains near Perth
which offer spectacular
views of the city and an
exciting area to discover
Australian nature. Activi-
ties such as horseback
riding, swimming at lakes,
mountain biking , camping
and hiking are favourite
activities in this area. It
also offers the opportunity
to learn about Australia's
unique flora and fauna.
There are many school
programs at the Perth Hills
Discovery Centre, includ-
ing one entitled,
“Biodiversity in the Bush.”
The Bush means Australian
forests. Biodiversity is
about all the different
kinds of life including
plants, insects, animals and
bacteria. Prior to the ex-
cursion, students learnt
vocabulary about the Aus-
tralian Bush as well as na-
ture related topics such as
climate, weather, animal
survival and plant and
animal life cycles.
Although at this time we
were not able to attend
our term 1 excursion to
the Perth Hills Discovery
Centre, we have post-
poned this trip until later
in the school year. Going
to the Perth Hills is a fan-
tastic opportunity for stu-
dents to visit a special
area in the Perth region
that is different from the
city and beaches.
We look forward to this
exciting excursion in the
future!
penses. Along with learning
about budgets and how to
make them, we have learnt
culturally important finan-
cial skills such as: “What is
GST?”
“How are salaries taxed?”
“What is a causal worker
and what is the ATO?”
“What is a HECS debt?”
In the Language Centre at
Morley Senior High
School, we not only learn
intensive English, but we
also learn about Australian
culture and life skills. Cur-
rently we are using Mi-
crosoft Excel to create
our own monthly budgets

“What kinds of jobs can stu-
dents have in Australia?”
“What is a gold-coin dona-
tion?”
“How do I send an email to
my boss?”
Learning life skills helps stu-
dents to be successful and
happy in Australia.
