Our full day tour includes the King River Gorge, the “rack” section of the railway track (steepest steam railway in the southern hemisphere), the magnificent rainforest, and all stations along the way. The train stops in Queenstown for one and a half hours allowing passengers to explore the historic mining town and discover the region’s rich history with a guided or self guided tour.

Rack and Gorge | HALF DAY

Raft and Steam | HALF DAY

Queenstown > Dubbil Barril > QueenstownCombine a train journey with a white-water adventure as King River Rafting guides you down the rapids of the King River to Dubbil Barril. There you will meet the train for the return journey to Queenstown.

Wilderness in comfortBuilt in 1896 to transport ore from Queenstown’s mines to the port of Strahan, the West Coast Wilderness Railway now carries visitors through Tasmania’s western wilderness in style aboard historic carriages pulled by meticulously restored steam engines. You’ll travel through rainforests, cross wild rivers and mountain gorges, enjoying spectacular views while listening to fascinating commentary about the region’s rich and colourful past.

Footplate Experience | 8 HOURS

Queenstown > Dubbil Barril > QueenstownYour opportunity to spend half a day in the steam loco cabin alongside the driver and fireman on our Rack and Gorge tour. This experience will delight steam and rail enthusiasts and makes an ideal gift. Overalls and tea flask provided.

Heli-SteamCombine your steam train journey with a bird’s eye view of Western Tasmania. Travel by train from Strahan to Dubbil Barril, then board your helicopter for a spectacular flight back to Strahan.

River and Rainforest | HALF DAY

Strahan > Dubbil Barril > StrahanEnjoy a relaxing half day journey departing the original harbour side Regatta Point Station in Strahan. Take in the fabulous views as the train follows the Macquarie harbour foreshore and King River taking you deep into the rainforest.

Steam and Hydro | FULL DAY

Immerse yourself in history by combining the Rack and Gorge tour and an afternoon of exploration with RoamWild Tasmania tours, visiting the abandoned Hydro township of Lake Margaret and Queenstown’s art deco gem, the Paragon Theatre.

Choice of tours & carriagesA range of full and half-day tours have options to include activities such as heritage tours, white water rafting and scenic helicopter flights. Each tour has the option of travelling in our stylish Wilderness Carriage (complete with balcony), in which guests are welcomed with a complimentary glass of Tasmanian sparkling wine on arrival and enjoy delicious Tasmanian produce throughout the journey, or in our beautifully restored Heritage Carriages with drinks and snacks available for purchase along the way.
