EVENTS SCHEDULE & SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
MEMBER OF THE YEAR, PETE LOBNER Every year the Board of Directors selects a member of our section who
has contributed to the success of our section and most importantly made having fun in enjoying our automobiles and the company the people who drive and own them. This year Pete was unanimously
selected for this honor. Pete and Jen though not on the board contribute to making our events fun, entertaining and provide us with
suggested activities that we all enjoy.
President Victoria Mazelli presents Pete with his plaque of recognition.
CONGRATULATIONS PETE
During the gift exchange Pete was rewarded by having his gift taken away no less than five time. The veterans believe this is a record for having a gift taken away. Initially, thoughts that a disgruntled member who was not chosen for member of the year were doing this, but a thorough investigation
determined this was not the case, he just kept getting nice things that others wanted.

THE SAN DIEGO SECTION CHRISTMAS PARTY
Holding our banner are incoming President Diana Kruse, Vice President Anthony Ockunzzi and outgoing President Victoria Mazelli.
What a celebration we had for the Holiday Party, there was a beautiful
Christmas Tree, festive decorations, great food and presents to die for. Our Regional Director, Bud Cloninger and his lovely bride Dee joined us for the day.
The decorations were arranged by Carol, Diana and
Victoria.
Diana made a slide
show presentation of our past years’ activities. This photo

The gift table is loaded with surprises, wonder what is in the big box? Guess we will find out in a bit. The gift exchange is just that a lot of exchanging.
Guests began to arrive right at the appointed time and an attempt was made to get photos by the Christmas Tree with some success.

DID YOU KNOW? S, Ross
The 1902 Baker Electric Streamliner Torpedo’s was the
first automobile to use seat belts and was the first car break the 100mph mark. The Torpedo’s bodies were
very streamlined, decades ahead of the time. Walter Baker regularly crashed his cars, thus none of
his speed marks went into any record books. Even in his own day, he became known as Bad Luck Baker.
What probably saved his life in all those crashes were plain, simple shoulder harnesses, an idea again much too modern for the times.
“Bad Luck Walter” ready to roll, quite figuratively speaking
The remains of Walter’s
Streamliner. In his speed runs, two people were in the
car. Walter sat up front driving and
the guy in back was the brakeman. When he had to
stop or slow down Walter yelled
brakes, one would assume. Walter ran
over someone on nearly all of his speed attempts, killing a man in one instance and was immediately charged with manslaughter. Chargers
were dropped when it was determined that the guy had crossed over the safety line.
The Baker Electric Company built cars from 1899 until 1914. He joined the Peerless Automobiles Organization
in 1919
Robert Lutz comment on electric cars. “Every American thinks their neighbor should own one.”
Robert Anthony Lutz was a top leader of all of the United States Big Three automobile manufacturers, having been in succession executive vice president
(and board member) of Ford Motor Company, president and then vice chairman (and board member) of Chrysler Corporation, and vice chairman of General Motors.

RARE PACKARD PIANO URGENTLY NEEDS A HOME
This very rare hundred year old Packard piano
desperately needs a new home, and SOON! Due to
a storage space problem this incredible instrument
needs some loving person to take it and give it a
new home. In lieu of that is there someone willing
to provide temporary storage for the piano until a
permanent home can be found for it? We plan to
spread the word far and wide that the piano is
available so as to promptly find its new home.
Condition: the cabinet is original and in excellent
shape, but the instrument needs repair and tuning.

Happy New Year! 2020 is here. It seems not that long ago the world was
anticipating Y2K disasters and predictions of flying and self-driving cars. Though there are self-driving cars, we are still driving our Mercedes-Benz vehicles with pride
