Outdoor Adventure Program

The Recreation, Intramurals and Student Life Department at Okanagan College is proud to continue the Outdoor Adventure Program. This program is intended to introduce students to fun recreational outdoor activities that are found in the Kelowna area. Specific events will be promoted individually but will also be a part of the Outdoor Adventure Program. A Grand Prize of a Norco Mountain Bike Prize Package from Gerick Cycle will be given away at the end of the semester. Look for the Outdoor Adventure Program logo attached to each event.

GET ACTIVE, GET OUTSIDE

The Wellness ChallengeThe wellness challenge is an individual event that is meant to be a truly rewarding experience. The activities exercise the physical, mental, social, spiritual and environmental aspects of the individual. You must complete at least 50% of the activities that are listed in the Wellness Challenge package. The wellness Challenge is open to all staff and students at Okanagan College. You start by picking up a Wellness Challenge Package and completing activities between January 7th, 2008 and April 18th, 2008. Keep a record of which activities you completed, the date you completed them, and the corresponding activity number from the list. Big White Sunset Snowshoe Tour This tour begins with transportation from Okanagan College Kelowna Campus to Big White Ski Resort. Here we get fitted into new style snowshoes for our trip into the wilderness. We will see various tracks scattered along our trails, evidence of the winter activity of the local wildlife. We will enjoy the views as the sunsets on another great day. Headlamps will be worn to find our way back in the dark. We then return to Happy Valley Lodge and then back to Kelowna. This tour is led by “Trailhead Ed” from Monashee Adventure Tours Inc.

Outdoor Adventure Hiking - KALAMOIR TRAILS Hike the narrow upper and lower trails along the lakeshore with open and shaded slopes. See excellent views overlooking Okanagan Lake, caves, and a variety of common plants of the Okanagan including poison ivy and cactus alongside the trails. Comfortable hiking boots with tread are recommended for this easy to moderate Sunday hike. Indoor climbing Join Campus Recreation at Beyond the Crux, Kelowna’s only Indoor Climbing Gym, for an afternoon of excellent indoor climbing challenges. This will be a fun way to try climbing and to experience 2 of the disciplines of climbing in one session. The bouldering warm up and then the top rope challenges after the warm up. During our session will include the rules of the gym and group climbing, the bouldering warm up while putting the harnesses on, then the rest of the time will be spent on the ropes. Usually we finish with a race!

Campus to Campus Half MarathonThis race is from the UBC Okanagan Campus to the Kelowna Campus at Okanagan College. APRILKayakingRattlesnake Island–This is an excellent progression in the world of kayaking. We will start our tour from Antler Beach and then paddle across Okanagan Lake to Rattlesnake Island where we will stop for break and tour the island. Participants should have prior kayaking experience to join this tour. 2008 Interior Savings Ski2Sea Race

From the slopes of Big White to the shores of City Park in Kelowna, teams of up to seven people and soloists race others and the stopwatch over six legs that span 95 kilometers. The legs, in order of completion, are: alpine skiing, nordic skiing, mountain biking, road cycling, running, and canoeing/kayaking. Two people are required for the canoeing leg. The race is a relay and all team members are required to help bring the canoe equipment across the finish line. Okanagan College is looking to put together a team for this great event. Registration Deadline is March 16th. Sunday, April 6thCost $30 per individual

Okanagan College Inter-Campus Softball TournamentThe Campus Recreation Department is proud to host the first ever Okanagan College Inter-Campus Softball Tournament. Teams from each of the Okanagan College Campuses will participate in a fun, recreational style tournament. There will be prizes to be won, a BBQ for all participants and a post tournament social. So get a team together, take a “road trip” and make your way to Kelowna! This annual tournament will be hosted by a different Okanagan College Campus each year.

Learn how to use the Strength and Cardio Center equipment safely and effectively under the guidance of our staff. We will design basic fitness programs that will safely have you on your way to a fitter and healthier you!

The Athletics and Recreation Department invites you into our Fitness Facility to attend workshops and clinics, free of charge, that teach the skills necessary for building onto your current workout plan. Each week a BCRPA Registered Instructor will host a group of students and demonstrate new exercises and share workout tips with interested students. Whether you’re a beginner or just want to refresh your skills, the free How-To Clinics will teach you everything from BOSU exercises to Agility Training. We feel it is important to empower you with the knowledge to continue to improve your workouts. Consult the clinic board in the Fitness Facility for a more complete schedule.

RISE AND SHINE CIRCUIT

Jump start your morning with a fun workout blending cardio, strength and core conditioning exercises. This class will boost your metabolism and give you energy for the whole day. BOOT CAMP

Boot camp challenges you with circuit training, weight training, yoga, pilates, obstacle training, running, power walking and improved stretching techniques giving your mind and body the optimal fitness experience. The focus of this 5 week “Total Body Conditioning” is to improve ones strength, cardio, agility and balance as well as overall fitness. All fitness levels are welcome. Each class is one hour in length and will be held at the Skaha Residence Field.

READY TO BE FIT: 12 WEEK PROGRAM

This specially designed 12-week wellness program is FREE and designed for our students that are ready to get fit, but are not sure where to start. It is also for those who have started an exercise program but are having trouble sticking with it. With the help of your lifestyle coach, you will explore your goals and design a fitness program to meet your specific needs. We will teach you how to exercise safely and effectively. During the 12 weeks, your lifestyle coach will answer your questions and help to keep you motivated with weekly follow-up calls and monthly one to one program reviews.

YOGA This class consists of various postures, deep relaxation, and breathing techniques. Yoga helps people develop flexibly, strength, balance and concentration. It’s great for a stress release and increasing energy and vitality. Please dress in layers for warmth and comfort. Space is limited so register early and bring a yoga mat. Fitness TheoryThis course provides information specifically related to fitness fundamentals. Topics will cover a basic introduction to human anatomy and physiology, skeletal, muscular and cardiovascular and nervous systems. Other topics include: movement analysis, basic nutrition, and active living concepts. This course is a PREREQUISITE for all of the BCRPA fitness modules. Course fee includes the manual. Emergency First Aid and CPRLearn the skills needed to recognize and respond to medical emergencies in a fitness facility. The course covers skills needed to recognize, prevent and respond to cardiovasculat emergencies for adult, child and baby CPR C (AED training and certification included), and other topics such as choking, airway and breathing emergencies, and prevention of disease transmission. Fitness professionals certified through BCRPA need to recertify their First Aid every two years and CPR yearly.Date: Sunday March 2nd Cost: $80

Yoga FitnessThis BCRPA recognized course was designed by both the yoga nd fitness communities. The module is 50% practical and 50% theory and will give the fitness professional the skills necessary to instruct an introductory level yoga fitness class. In addition, registration will provide all BCRPA yoga fitness leaders with $2 million liability insurance as well as connect them with over 3000 registered leaders in the province.
