Newsletter No. 27 - Term 3 – Week 7 Thursday 28 August 2014
From the Principal…………..
MORE MUSIC IN THE SCHOOL This morning Holly’s String Group gave a magnificent performance for students, parents and staff. The twelve students in the group have been very dedicated and well-practised, and were confident on stage and enjoying themselves. After some joint items and solo performances the whole group played an original composition from Dindy Vaughan, who was the original orchestra leader. Dindy was in the audience and was very pleased with the performance. To all the children in the String Group, we thank you for the performance and we really look forward to your next recital.
LEVEL 3 OFF TO CAMP On Wednesday our Level 3s will be off to camp at Phillip Island for 3 days. This is a fantastic camp as the children use all the adventure activities that the camp offers. On my very first time at Phillip Island I did go on the giant swing and funnily enough, that was my last time too! However, children love it!! I do hope the weather is kind as the walk to Smith’s Beach and exploration of the rock pools is quite a highlight. However, if the weather closes in the camp has lots of large indoor spaces where lots of fun can be had. I know all the children and teachers will enjoy camp.
TEACHERS TO INDIA As I mentioned at assembly on Monday, Richard Lambert, Dani Thomas and Russell Monaghan are off to visit our sister school in India on Sunday night. Richard, together with Dani and Russell, have been invited to conduct some professional development with the staff of JIRS in India. They will also be participating in grade activities and planning a trip to India next year for students and teachers. I know JIRS is very keen to receive our students and share our different cultures. As JIRS is a residential school, Richard, Dani and Russell will be staying on-site and participating in life at JIRS both during the day and after hours. This is a very exciting opportunity for our school and the students at our school. When Richard, Dani and Russell return they will be talking to every grade in the school about their experiences and sharing their knowledge with our teachers. Our relationship with JIRS is a very strong one and will grow even stronger over time. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL

CANTEEN NEWS Now the weather is finally improving, we will be taking Soup Day off the menu after next Thursday 4
th September.
If you would like just one more bowl of soup, don’t forget to order next Thursday. The children have really enjoyed eating their soup in a restaurant setting and it will definitely be back on the Winter Menu next year.
There’s something strange growing on our apple tree out the front! What could it be? Libby, our wonderful Art Teacher, assures us it’s not dangerous, but all the latest rage – YARN BOMBING! Keep an eye out – it might get bigger as time goes on. (If you would like to make a contribution to our yarn bombing, either knitting or crocheting a shape, please feel free to send it in to the office or the Art Room.)

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Term 3 – Week 7 – 22nd – 29th August
Program Update
Hello Everyone, Firstly OSH Staff would like to say a very big WELL DONE to all children for their performances last week! Fantastic efforts and we enjoyed helping you all practice your songs and dance routines. We have been reflecting on our boundaries and pushing physical and creative limits in the program through all developmental areas and strengths. Sustainability and Reuse – Recycle has been a reoccurrence at the construction table and Secret Strategies and problem solving are being used in the games area to see what way works best and can we figure out how other’s do things . Welcome back Jeff who is helping co-ordinate the program over the following weeks. Thanks Jeff! Next week, A series of celebration days will be explored, like Moomba, Melbourne Cup, Father’s/Mother’s Day, Queen’s Birthday, etc. Co-ordinator

SCHOOL SIGN SCHOOL SIGN SCHOOL SIGN For our current volunteers – thank you, thank you, thank you! What a fabulous job you’re doing!! Could the following families please remember to drop their email address into the office: Hickey, Thomson, Ashworth, Kennington, Cousens. For those of you who would like to join our band of merry makers, please read the following:
Wanting to help in TERM 4, but only have 15 minutes or so to spare? Then we’ve got the job for you!
It’s exciting, it’s worthwhile, but best of all, it’s easy!!! Our school sign is known far and wide. We’ve even been featured in a builder’s newsletter! Lots of passers-by have called the school to comment on our sign. So…to keep it interesting and up-to-date, we need volunteers on TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS. The sign’s messages are prepared for you. It takes approximately 15 minutes to wind down the sign, change the letters and wind it back up again. This could be done at any time during the two allocated days. If we get lots of volunteers, you may only need to change the sign a few times a year. Please leave your name, contact number and preferred day on the slip below and return to your class teacher or directly to the office so a roster can be created. Looking forward to a wonderful response! Lyse Carlson
