Welcome to the 4th Cultural Education Directory, what a milestone we have achieved by working together! This year has been a huge challenge for many, particularly the creative & educational sectors and children and young people. We have continued to strive to bring people together and ensure all children have opportunities to engage and participate in creative activities. Over the summer we have showcased the sector with a series of short films, worked with partners on the Stoke Creative Passport and continued to engage children and young people through the Creative Youth Voices programme. We have also been humbled and inspired, working with young people through the Black Lives Matter movement with the Future Hopes campaign.

This is a period of change, and as a movement we are working closely with strategic partners through the Stoke Creates initiative, creating a constituted body to leverage investment into the area and pull together resources with Universities, NPOs and Stoke On Trent City Council. During this transition, I will be stepping down as Chair after three years and look forward to working with Natalie as she steps into the role of Chair leads the movement forward. It has been a blessing to be a part of such an incredible movement and I look forward to continuing to support the CEP.Thank you to everyone who has walked with us.

Nicky TwemlowOutgoing Chair

The last twelve months have proved difficult for all of us in ways we probably hadn’t even imagined. One of the most effected groups has been children and their educational environments. But in this year of uncertainty and isolation it has become clearer than ever before that the arts and creativity are a key factor in the lives of children and young people, not only promote more engaging learning environments but also to help them develop resilience and maintain their mental health and well-being.

I have enjoyed working with creative organisations and educators across the city and I’m excited to be taking on a greater role within the CEP. As we move into 2021, the work of Stoke and North Staffs CEP will continue to ensure more schools and education settings have the resources, skills and knowledge to widen their students’ creative outlooks and offer them the best starting point for their future careers and goals in life.

AppetiteAppetite aims to get more people in Stoke-on-Trent and the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme to experience and be inspired by the arts. We do this by working with local people to co-create world-class, unforgettable arts experiences in and for their communities.

Appetite began in Summer 2013 as a programme for Stoke-on-Trent and since then has presented a feast of family-friendly, breath-taking cultural events in places and spaces across Stoke-on-Trent enjoyed by thousands from across the city. Working with our community decision makers Supper Club, our partners and Volunteers, we bring the arts to communities.

In 2019 the Appetite programme was supported by Arts Council England to expand into the neighbouringBorough of Newcastle-under-Lyme. We’re looking forward to collaborating with residents and partners across the area to create life-changing arts experiences in new communities.

Workshops are delivered by a lead dance/music artist and supporting musician with a full set-up of samba drums to energise and engage pupils with live accompaniment, bringing the carnival vibe to life. Get ready to explore the wonders of the land of carnival through style-specific body rhythms, musical ideas and easy to follow choreography.

B artsB arts is multi-disciplinary, participatory arts organisation. We work with artists with specialisms in 3-D and 2-D making (lanterns, carnival images, textiles, kite-making, costume and set design, illustration); creative writing, story-telling and performance (poetry and spoken word, song-writing, photography and video, animation, puppetry, interactive theatre); and cooking, bread-baking and gardening.

We often combine different artforms to create immersive experiences at the same time as achieving specific outcomes. For example, our Little School of Improbable Cooking project aims to improve literacy and inspire a love of reading and writing alongside exploring healthy eating and cooking skills for children and young people through the creative framework of magical catering challenges; Codename Tomorrowland uses a mix of performance, play and 3-D making to explore children’s ideas for rebuilding neighbourhoods in response to climate change; New Futures Lab worked with young people to explore issues around youth safety through the scripting, filming and editing of a short horror film.

We see the people we work with as co-creators, and our work includes child and young person-led activity. We often work with partners to fund-raise together to make arts projects happen. We also support schools and colleges to achieve the Artsmark award.

I can help to take that uncertainty away & give the simple steps to make your dance lessons a success. My CPD and resources are easy to follow and take the stress away from planning.

I work from a theme or topic based approach - the lessons support and consolidate learning in other subject areas and allow creativity to flourish; skills to be developed and are accessible for all abilities and levels of experience.

So when you ask the question ‘What are they learning?’ the answer will be clear.

Claire PringDance is a funny subject to teach, it doesn't have a logical, linear format, which I think makes it 'equally cursed as blessed'. Once you feel confident with it as a subject it gives you great freedom - but until then it feels difficult to grasp.

British Ceramics BiennialThe British Ceramics Biennial (BCB) is the single largest ceramics event in the UK, bringing great art and creative energy to Stoke-on-Trent, in addition to a vibrant year-round education and community engagement programme.

Through the development of engaging, hands-on activity, the BCB’s education programme uses big ideas and innovation to stimulate enthusiasm for clay across the curriculum at all stages of learning: EYFS, Primary, and Secondary. Our primary objective is to have a positive impact on individual and community life in the city of Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding area, specifically facilitating an understanding of self and place, pride, creativity, and a connection to heritage which includes the diversity and regeneration of the city. These aims are supported by our partnerships across education, industry, and cultural sectors.

We offer workshops, CPD sessions, opportunities to participate in larger projects, and support with getting clay, ceramics and creative learning embedded within the curriculum.

Loving learning Through CreativityLoving learning Through Creativity is a partnership project between Stoke on Trent and North Staffordshire Cultural Education Partnership, Arts Connect (West Midlands Regional Arts Council England Bridge organisation), Partners in Creative Learning (PiCL), YMCA North Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Opportunity Area.

Working with 11 schools in the Stoke on Trent area the project was developed in 2018 to tackle persistent absences through an “artist in residence” style project. Each school identified priority year groups and works with the team and an artist to deliver weekly in school sessions, additional extra-curricular breakfast and afterschool sessions all linked to the artists own practice.

Our aim is to engage young people, who are disengaged or at risk of disengaging with with school through the use of arts activities and positive role model/artist.

All sessions are linked to the curriculum to reignite the young person’s love of learning and make positive associations with school as well as; learning new skills, increasing confidence, finding new ways to express themselves and develop positive relationships with peers, teachers and the artist.

The programme also includes additional trips and activities to local, regional and national arts organisations, linked to their arts and cultural work as well as showcase opportunities to celebrate their work and share it with their families.

Currently due to Covid 19 our work in Schools is paused however our some of our Artists have continued to support schools through the development of resources to continue engagement in the Arts.
