April President’s Message Dues Deadline to Continue Membership: If you have not paid your dues by the end of this month, your status as a member will cease, and whenever you attend a dinner, you will be cherished as a guest, but the dinner will cost you an extra $10. And you will no longer receive the newsletter. (Dinner cost for members is $20; for guests it is $30.) Since the dues for a single person is $25, you will have paid more than that if you come to three Monday gatherings as a guest ($10 extra x three dinners = $30). And, since the dues for a couple is $45, you will similarly have paid more than that if you come to three Monday gatherings as guest ($10 extra x 2 persons x 3 dinners = $60). Moraga Movers does not want to lose you as a member. We feel we provide excellent value for your dues with our social hours, dinners, entertainment, clubs, and trips. We hope that you will not cut yourself off from these events and the friendships and acquaintances you have forged at Moraga Movers. Our new website has gone live: After several months of close consultations between your Board and Lynn McAuliffe of Champagne Design, the new and improved website that has been under construction has gone live. Take a look at all of our efforts and wander around at http://www.moragamovers.org. Many of you will remember George and Julie Fisher who moved to Florida. George keeps close tabs on Moraga Movers as his second love (Julie is the first love) and calls me up short when he feels I am going astray. Here is an excerpt that he wrote me just after exploring the new website: “Wow! Phil, I am really impressed!!! Someone did a beautiful job of putting this together and it is such an improvement. Congratulations. I was shocked, but so pleased, to see that picture of Julie and me. It’s so nice to not be forgotten. God, I look old!” See you at the movie Woman in the Window on March 15th.

DAZZLING DAMES OF BROADWAY: CAROL CHANNING

Carol Channing is one of the greatest comic musical theatre stars, and one of the most imitated, in musical theatre history. In this presentation we’ll cover her start in San Francisco, her early career as a dancer, her big break in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and her legendary status in Hello Dolly. We’ll also look at her gift for doing outrageous impressions of one of the famous movie stars of her era. Plus, we’ll see her talk about her love life (at ages 81 and 89) on two different episodes of “The View”. And we’ll watch her perform the title song from Hello Dolly after reviving the show in San Francisco at age 75.

Bonnie Weiss, your presenter, is a seasoned theatre educator, writer, radio and cabaret producer. She teaches classes on musical theatre history and appreciation for San Francisco State, UC Berkeley and Santa Clara University Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes. Bonnie also writes reviews and feature articles for Stage Directions, a national magazine for theatre educators and The Sondheim Review. She has hosted three radio programs on theatre and produced 12 sold-out cabaret shows.

Dinner Reservations

Reservations must be made no later than Wednesday, April 5th by midnight. Those of you who have Internet access can go to our new and improved website www.moragamovers.org to make your reservations. Those without Internet access can call (925) 376-6622. Reservations must be honored and paid for whether you attend or not unless the reservation is canceled by Wednesday, April 5th before midnight. The price of the meal for members is $20 and for guests it is $30 (which includes gratuity and tax). It is payable at the entrance. Please pay by check. It helps our bookkeeping.

If you make your reservations by telephone, you will be talking to an answering machine and you should: • State your name(s) clearly and slowly, spelling first and last; • Provide your telephone number. If we can’t understand your message, it may be the

only way we can identify you; • State clearly the names of other persons, your spouse/partner or other members or

guests for whom you are making reservations; • We will not call you to confirm your reservation unless we have a problem with your

message.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS Norma Claassen

Don’t forget to pay your dues. The deadline has been extended to March 31st. If you have not paid by then, you will no longer receive any newsletters. (A renewal form is at the back of this newsletter.) The dues amounts have not changed: a single member is $25 and a couple is $45. If you pay for your dues at a dinner meeting, please write two separate checks: one for the dues and one for the dinner. This helps us keep track of the payments.

Also, if you refer a new member to Moraga Movers you have a chance to win a year of “free” meals. Just have the new applicant add your name to the “referred by” line on the application. The drawing is held at the end of year at the Holiday luncheon Please remember that the guest fee to attend the monthly dinner meetings is $30. All the more reason to have your guest join the Moraga Movers. Also, if your guest does not appear for the meal and you did not cancel, you will be billed for the meal. We have to give an accurate count to the caterer and have to pay for the meals that are not consumed.

CLASSIC FILMS Larry Swindell.

On March 15, the classic film will be THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW (1944), a super melodrama with Edward G. Robinson and Joan Bennett. The Movers’ classic movie for Wednesday, April 19 is THE RAINMAKER, a period piece set in parched small-town Kansas in 1913. The 1956 film in Technicolor stars Katharine Hepburn as a local spinster, Wendell Corey as the town sheriff mooning awkwardly after her, and Burt Lancaster as a charming con man promising rain for the town’s desperate populace.

of stylized portraits of sophisticated women—slender and fashionably-clad. Evocative of Modigliani’s models, her subjects are rendered with elongated faces and limbs as they arrange flowers, drink tea, chat with friends, or otherwise pass the time. The show also features guest artist, Elizabeth Russell, aka Liz R Honeypots, from Forestville, CA, whose ceramics consist of utilitarian platters, mugs, casserole dishes and more. When not in use, all her piece serve equally well as art objects, each boldly and tastefully decorated with a unique design derived from nature: trees, plants, and a menagerie of owls, honeybees, whimsical sea creatures—even mythical beasts and dragons.
