Hagan is extremely motivated this year for the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season as he continues to deal with the loss of his younger brother, Kyle, who died of natural causes earlier this year. “It’s just a real special race for me,” Hagan said. “A lot of stuff happened over the offseason with losing my brother and I’m just coming out motivated. My lights have been great, the car is running great. We’ve just got a real powerhouse team right now.” For Pritchett, starting her first full season with DSR after joining the juggernaut midway through last year and driving in 15 of 24 events, it was quite a homecoming. The 28-year-old grew up in nearby Redlands, Calif., and graduated from Cal State San Bernardino. “This is what I consider one of the most prestigious races in the world,” she said. “This is not just my home track where I first went down a drag strip in a Jr. Dragster 20 years ago. When (crew chief Todd Okuhara) tells me ‘hang on,’ I’m like, “I’m giving this everything I’ve got, if it starts to sashay, so what, if it goes two feet past the finish line, so what. We’ve got brakes, we’ve got parachutes. We are going to get every ounce out of that qualifying run.”

Next up: This weekend’s NHRA Arizona Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park near Phoenix where Pritchett won her first Top Fuel title a year ago.

Papa John’s Pizza joins NHRA after DSR introduction Papa John’s International, Inc. (NASDAQ: PZZA), which has more than 5,000 locations in 44 countries, has been named the Official Pizza Partner of the National Hot Rod Association, officials announced on Feb. 8. For more than 30 years, Papa John’s has been committed to its BETTER INGREDIENTS. BETTER PIZZA. promise. This promise refers to not only its products, but also its people and customer service. Indeed, consumers have rated Papa John's No. 1 in customer satisfaction among all national pizza chains in the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) for 15 of the past 17 years. This partnership builds upon Papa John’s involvement last season with its sponsorship of Top Fuel racer Leah Pritchett and Don Schumacher Racing. Pritchett campaigned her gold and black dragster at five races during the season beginning in Seattle. The paint scheme mirrors the famous 1971 Chevy Camaro Z28 which founder “Papa” John Schnatter sold in 1984 to keep his father’s restaurant out of bankruptcy.

Papa John’s returns to DSR for the 2017 season as the primary sponsor for Pritchett at 20 of 24 Mello Yello events that began when Pritchett and her team won the season-opening Winternationals at Pomona, Calif. That followed by one week a career best 3.654 seconds during testing near Phoenix on what was unofficially the quickest run in drag racing history. As the Official Pizza Partner of NHRA, Papa John’s will have a yearlong presence on-site at all 24 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events and on FOX Sports broadcasts. “Papa John’s is proud to be the Official Pizza Partner of NHRA.

As the only QSR brand in the sport, we look forward to connecting with fans at races throughout the country,” said “Papa” John Schnatter, founder, chairman and CEO of Papa John’s. “Leah and Don Schumacher Racing became members of our Pizza Family last year; this season we are officially welcoming NHRA to our Pizza Family.”

Page 4: MOPAR DÉJÀ VU - Constant Contactfiles.constantcontact.com/e965e2b5001/40e9c144-350... · world,” she said. “This is not just my home track where I first went down a drag strip

Papa John’s also is the official pizza of the NFL, Super Bowl and Major League Baseball. “We are excited that Papa John’s is expanding its relationship with the NHRA, Don Schumacher Racing, and the Papa John’s Top Fuel Dragster, the ‘fastest pizza delivery vehicle’ on the planet,” said Brad Gerber, NHRA vice president and chief development officer. “NHRA Drag Racing featured tremendous growth across the board in 2016, which has created many new and exciting opportunities for the NHRA, Papa John’s, and all of our partners. We look forward to continued success and growth in 2017.”

BETTER INGREDIENTS. BETTER PIZZA. PAPA JOHN’S.

MY BLAND PERSPECTIVE DSR life is full of earplugs, Sharpies, sunburn, fast cars, fast food By ALLIE BLAND I’ve been with Don Schumacher Racing for a little over a year. Throughout the 2016 season, along with being a fan of NHRA for years, I have picked up some knowledge about the sport that I thought was worth sharing. When attending an NHRA event, you need earplugs (duh). But do you know how to get the best results when using them? Lick them first. Yup! If you lick your earplugs, they are much easier to use. Plus, you’ll look like a pro. Next time you attend a race, look to the starting line and you’ll see crew chiefs, crew guys and owners all lick their earplugs first. Yes, it’s kind of gross but what’s more important, protecting your hearing and looking (almost) as cool as Antron Brown or ingesting a little earwax? I’ve also found that since joining the DSR PR team and traveling the NHRA circuit, that I have accumulated approximately 30,000 Sharpies. Drivers are always in need of Sharpies and most carry them at all times but I started collecting them here and there just in case a driver is in need. Also, my crew guy husband finds the need to bring home every Sharpie he has ever used. Fun fact: Sharpies can go through the washer AND the drier and still work. Speaking of crew guys, they’re working at work. Please try to not ask them for blown up parts when they’re putting the car back together between rounds on Sunday. These guys rebuild their 11,000-horsepower racecars between each qualifying session and possibly four times on Sundays. They’re busy. We all love your support of our organization and the NHRA but try asking for parts when they’re not thrashing before to the final round. The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing series consists of 24 races each year. Most of those events take place during the heat of the summer and typically, it’s pretty sunny and hot at the racetrack. Wear your sunscreen, folks. Don’t be like me and get sunburned at every event. It never fails that I get roasted on Friday because I have forgotten to wear sunscreen. Learn from me! While on the road, we’ve gotten to visit some very cool locations and had some great food along the way. I’ve come to realize that the West Coast dominates in eating establishments. I’ve fallen in love with In-N-Out (how could you not?) and I cannot pass up the chance to have Del Taco. I mean tacos AND French fries?! My first year at DSR was a dream come true. I have loved drag racing for years and working with DSR has been a goal of mine since college. I love coming to work and working with an incredible group of people. It takes a village, well, a shop, to make eight teams operate at the level of DSR. Thank you to our fabrication shop, CNC shop, hospitality crew, front office staff and race teams for being dedicated to our family. Here’s to another year of fast cars and record-breaking times. (Allie is an integral part of the DSR communications team and is married to Cody Bland, engine builder

for the U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster.)
