Boating

1-888-876-2778 | www.mooseheadlake.org 1110 1-888-876-2778 | www.mooseheadlake.org

You can spend a day on Moosehead and feel like you are the only person on the water. You feel like the lake is yours for the time you are there. Considering the amount of space available, the feeling might not be far from wrong.

In a typical year, the best boating occurs from Memorial Day through early September. Full lake levels occur the beginning of the season, with the annual drawdown commencing in mid August. By late fall, the lake is usually down at least 3’ so some caution is required in shallow bays or coves. The lake is adequately marked with hazard buoys, but only beyond 200’ from the shore. Launching facilities are available in Greenville, Rockwood and Seboomook for public use.

There are numerous other lakes and ponds in the Moosehead area that offer all types of boating opportunities.

For those of you seeking privacy and solitude for canoeing and kayaking scores of smaller lakes and ponds await you. Some of our favorites are the Wilson Ponds, Prong Pond, First Roach Pond, Brassua Lake, Mountain View Pond, Sawyer and Indian Ponds. These all offer launching but some are carry in. For those of you who would like to experience the beauty and tranquility of gliding across a pond and sneaking up on the wildlife that calls this area their home, you may rent equipment at local shops in town. Some even offer pick up and delivery to your destination.

Regardless of the size of your boat, there is abundant room for you to enjoy the Moosehead Lake area, a true boater’s paradise!

Fishing

18 1-888-876-2778 | www.mooseheadlake.org

The Moosehead Lake Region offers some of the finest fishing opportunities for wild eastern brook trout, lake trout, blue back trout, landlocked salmon, muskie and smallmouth bass anywhere in the northeast. The Moosehead fisheries management area is over 4000 square miles, with more than 600 lakes and ponds, 30 miles of major rivers and over 3000 miles of tributaries. Within the Moosehead Lake Region are the headwaters of the Penobscot, Kennebec, St. John, Moose, Roach and Allagash Rivers.

Moosehead Lake, the center piece of our region is 75,000 acres , nearly forty miles long and twelve miles wide with breath taking scenery of undeveloped shoreline and mountains. Mount Kineo rises over 760 feet straight above the surface of the lake. There are endless opportunities for every big lake fishermen. Moosehead Lake is famous for its landlocked salmon, brook trout, and lake trout fishery. Smallmouth bass in the Lily Bay area provides good shallow water fishing for the whole family through the summer months. Ice shanties dot the lake in the winter housing fisherman in pursuit of the thriving lake trout. Many other lakes in the immediate area with easy access from state maintained public launches gives avid anglers lots of choices most with lodges or cabins rentals with dock space for your boat or a rental.

Our small pond eastern brook trout fishery attracts anglers from far and wide. There are forty ponds within a one hour’s drive of downtown Greenville. Many are road side with easy canoe or kayak access or you may choose to hike into the many back country ponds where your only visitor may be one of the many moose and deer that call this area home.

Fifteen minutes from Greenville on the west side of Moosehead Lake you’ll find the East Outlet of the Kennebec River, a beautiful 3 ½ mile fly fishing only river, famous for its landlocked salmon and brook trout fishery. Another ten miles puts you on the West Outlet of the Kennebec and its wonderful smallmouth angling. Ten more minutes and you’re on the Moose River, in the quaint lakeside village of Rockwood, a tail water fishery that holds landlocked salmon and

brookies all season. Twenty miles up the eastern side of Moosehead finds you in the tiny town of Kokadjo and the headwaters of the Roach River another fly fishing only, catch and release river winding 6 ½ miles through undeveloped remote land emptying into Spencer Bay on Moosehead Lake. Fly fishermen from all walks of life make an annual trip to Kokadjo for the fall spawning run of landlocked salmon and big brook trout.

If smallmouth bass angling has great appeal, you’ll find some world class spots very accessible to those willing to step off the beaten path. Our cooler climate keeps fish in the shallows longer so explosive surface action lasts well into the summer.

We invite you to spend some of your precious fishing time in the remote Moosehead Lake Region where our local outfitters and guide services will gladly help you plan your trip. Experiences that may just bring you back again and again.

There are many historical sights located in the Moosehead Lake Region. An individual or family can have an interesting experience learning about the history of this area. We have listed a few of the popular sites of the area for you to experience. Stop by the Chamber for a complete list and directions.

Step back in time at the Moosehead Historical Society. See the Moosehead Region as it used to be and learn local history. See our Lumberman’s Museum, 1880’s Kitchen, visit our restored Victorian Mansion with professional tour guides. Displays change every year, so visit us again! The Moosehead Historical Society is open for tours June through September 1pm to 4pm Wednesday through Friday. Located on Pritham Avenue in Greenville Junction. Call 207-695-2909, or visit our website at www.mooseheadhistory.org.

The Center for Moosehead History , 6 Lakeview Street, Greenville contains the Moosehead Lake Aviation Museum with exhibits highlighting the history of the region’s bush pilots and their aircraft. The Center also houses an extensive display of Indian artifacts, a number of other alternating displays, and a gift shop.

A popular attraction for visitors in the Moosehead Lake Region is the Moosehead Marine Museum. Located in downtown Greenville, the Museum houses exhibits of the steamboat era and the Mount Kineo House. Since its inception, the Museum’s main goal has been the restoration of the lake steamer, The Katahdin “Kate”. After visiting the Museum you can hop on the “Kate” for an enjoyable ride up the lake. Contact the Museum for more information at 207-695-2716 or visit online at www.katahdincruises.com.

Historical

28 1-888-876-2778 | www.mooseheadlake.org

For many years, water traffic was the main mode of transportation in this region. Steamboats carried livestock, equipment, supplies and passengers. The need for Moosehead steamboats waned with the coming of roads.

The last survivor of the fleet, the Katahdin became a towboat hauling pulpwood rafts. In 1975, she hauled her last log boom across Moosehead Lake to the East Outlet. Scott Paper Company presented the Katahdin to the Moosehead Marine Museum in 1977. In 1985, after many years of devoted work by many, the Katahdin, Queen of the fleet, once again sailed over the deep waters of Moosehead Lake.

The Katahdin is the oldest floating hull of Bath Iron Works, built in 1914. The major repairs to the hull of the Katahdin have been completed, but funding is still needed. All donations and memberships to the Moosehead Marine Museum are greatly appreciated.

drivesEvery year, autumn displays brilliant hues of red, yellow and orange. The typical “leafpeeping” season is from mid-September thru mid-October. The change in the landscape from the greens of summer is breathtaking.

There are several scenic loops for those traveling by automobile. It also happens to be a very popular time of year for hikers to get the up close and personal look at autumn’s beauty. Whatever your mode of transportation may be, make the Moosehead Lake region the leafpeeping destination for you!

Visit our website for a printable list of scenic drives in our area.

BirdWatching

The Moosehead Lake Region is ideal for birding. Almost every warbler of the northern forest is found here. Hard-to-find species thrive in the area, including spruce grouse, boreal chickadee, gray jay, black-backed woodpecker, Bicknell’s thrush, and white-winged crossbill. Enjoy birding as a near-wilderness experience amid lakes, streams, bogs, and abundant wildlife.

Many inns, B&Bs, lodges, and sporting camps cater to birders and have access to information on where to search for target species. The Moosehead Lake Region was the first area in the state to be researched and mapped for the Maine Birding Trail. Check out our website for a printable PDF file of the Moosehead Lake Birding Guide.
