You already know how to form the Passé Composé tense. Here is a reminder:

• The auxiliary - the present tense of avoir

• Then add the past participle of the verbyou want to put into the past

BUT one group of 17 verbs use the present tense of être instead.

MOST verbs use part of avoir to form the passé composé.

When the passé composé is formed with être, there is an agreement of the past participle.

So, if you have a feminine subject (the “doer” of the verb), you must also have a feminine past participle.

Eg

Elle est allé (feminine)e

If the subject is plural, the past participlemust also be plural.

Eg Ils sont allé (masculine plural)s

Il est allé (masculine)

BUT

Elles sont allé (feminine plural)es
