HUNTINGTON BEACH, California/USA (Wednes-day, January 26, 2011) –Quiksilver and the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) today announced the Qui-ksilver Pro New York, set to take place on Long Island’s Long Beach from September 4-15. The Quiksilver Pro New York will be the 6th stop on the 2011 ASP World Tour and the first-ever ASP World Tour stop on the East Coast of the United States. The event will offer a $1 mil-lion dollar prize purse to competitors, an amount unprec-edented in professional surfing. The Quiksilver Pro New York will expand the Quiksilver Pro Global Series, which also includes the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast in Australia (February 26-March 9) and the Quiksilver Pro France (Oc-tober 4-15).“We are beyond excited to host the biggest pro surf event in the world on Long Island this September,” said Bob McKnight, CEO of Quiksilver. “There has always been a huge contingent of dedicated surfers and surf enthusi-asts on the East Coast and they will now get a chance to watch the world’s best surfers in Long Beach. We are also bringing the best and brightest Quiksilver, Roxy and DC athletes to New York City, the largest media arena in the world, for twelve days of surf, skate, BMX, fashion, art and music that will bring incredible global attention to these phenomenal athletes and the action sports culture and lifestyle.”“When I was young, I remember some great waves on Long Island with my brother Sean and our friends,” said Kelly Slater, 10x ASP World Champion. “I’m really look-ing forward to being in New York. summarizing that September 4-15 is one of the most consistent time periods for sizable surf in the region. In addition, indepen-dent local feedback supports these findings, with September typically averaging 3+ hurricane swells, typically with at least one 3-4 day swell. Surfline.com is the official forecaster for The Quiksilver Pro New York.“This was a very fascinating study,” said Sean Collins, Chief Forecaster and President of Surfline.com. “The surf climate in Western Long Island is greatly affected by the underwater Hudson Canyon offshore, which can turn average surf into very high quality surf comparable to many of the best surf spots in the world on the right day. We are also in a La Nina year, so we expect the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season to be a little more active and hopefully we can score great surf with the world’s top surfers in one of the best cities in the world.”

The competition dates will include the Quiksilver Pro Trials Presented by Unsound Surf, the premiere surf shop in Long Beach on September 3. Following will be the Quiksilver Pro New York WT competition window, set for September 4-15.

The Gatorade Free Flow Tour seeks the top amateur snowboard and freeskiers 21 and under. Win-ners from the slopestyle and su-perpipe contests will earn a spot in the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Fi-nals in Snowbasin this February, where overall Champions earn a prequalified spot in the first stop of the 2011-12 Winter Dew Tour. The Vail, and Okemo event’s also includes Junior Jam divisions for

Okemo Mountain, Vermont

13 and under. Each event provided beutiful weather whitch helped in getting some sick shots of these gnarley seasoned shredders. Moondoggie was in attendance to provide each competitor, in every di-vision with a free picture courtesy of Gatorade.

The anticipation of a swell is like a drifter in a sandy desert searching for a body of water to quench his thirst. As des-peration began to set in and a mirage of false forecasts passed by, a promising swell was finally gifted to all of the lost souls in the Mid-Atlantic January 17 and 18, welcom-ing the first good swell of the New Year. As time goes by during a lull, both the ocean and our sur-roundings seem to go flat. Avalon surfer Kevin O’Brien admits feeling “anxious” and borderline “upset” when it’s been too long. Those much-needed waves can do a lot for a surfer’s peace of mind, es-pecially in the dead of winter. “I feel relieved once I surf after I haven’t in a while, peaceful, in a very good state of mind after I get wet,” O’Brien said.Sure, there was a solid two and a half weeks in the New Year before anything surfable ar-rived, but just like a birthday,

recently began snowboard-ing to keep his sanity during long periods with no swell, but admits that “nothing compares to suiting up and going wave for wave with your bros during winter or summer!” Most surfers in Jersey are just happy to surf knee-high, clean waves, just like a drift-er in the desert is content to find a puddle of fresh water. When you’re not used to pumping swell, you’ll pretty much be satisfied with any-thing. However, the pain of waiting for a solid swell is paid for with the pleasure a surfer receives when it finally comes. Here’s to a painless year with enough frigid waves to ride out until spring.

when you turn a certain age you don’t “feel” older instantly. It’s the experiences one captures throughout time that we evolve. As the ball dropped and the clock struck midnight I didn’t feel change, not until two and a half weeks later when I finally started my new year by getting in the water. There’s not much to look for-ward to in New Jersey in the dead of winter besides winter swells. For Avalon local John Gangemi, “other forms of exer-cising are no fun, regardless of how cold the water temperature is and how much extra rubber is needed to avoid being frostbit-ten; you just want to get wet.” A good alternative is to hit the slopes, because after all “snow is only frozen water,” in the words of wet suit pioneer and surf mogul Jack O’Neill.
