The Moon’s Motions
the moon revolves around the Earth from west to east in an elliptical orbit
its period of revolution is 27.3 days
its average distance from Earth is 386,000 miles
when the moon is nearest earth it is at perigeefarthest point apogee
the moon and sun appear the same size in the sky b/c of the difference in their distances from Earth

Checkpoint:
What is it called when the moon is farthest away from the Earth?
Oct 77:22 PM
Moonrise and Moonset
moon rises in the east and sets in the west, but unlike the sun the moon orbits around Earth
moon rises approx. 50 minutes later each day, this is caused by the fact that the moon moves along its orbit 13o every 24 hours, thus the Earth must rotate an extra 13o to the moon rise each day, this means that it takes the Earth about 50 minutes to 13o on its axis
when the moon is between Earth and the sun, it is seen mostly in the daytime sky
when the Earth is between the moon and sun, it is seen mostly in the night sky

Checkpoint: What is the difference in moonrise times from one day to the next?
Oct 77:22 PM
Waxing phase—when the lit side of the moon is growing from the new moon to full moon
Waning phase—when the lit side of the moon is diminishing from the full moon to the new moon
Lunar month—the time from one new moon to the next is not the same as the time for one revolution of the moon around the Earth
is 29.5 days

Neap Tide
The lowest level of high tide.
Neap tide comes twice a month, in the first and third quarters of the moon
Oct 89:42 AM
Spring Tide
The exceptionally high and low tides that occur at the time of the new moon or the full moon when the sun, moon, and earth are approximately aligned.
