Dear Azuka Family,

For the past four years, we have loved bringing you dynamic and daring stories of outcasts and underdogs in this beautiful little theater. It is here that we have producedsome of our most-seen plays, launched our first three-show subscription series, andbegan producing our New Professionals shows. We have also grown our family of audiences and subscribers by 30%. Alas, sometimes things must change, even when it’s just getting good.

Last fall, the First Baptist Church building was put up for sale and purchased by LibertiChurch. We’re grateful to the previous owners, First Baptist Church, for welcoming us,supporting our work and envisioning this space as one of creation. We’re sad to reportthat Liberti Church does not share this vision and, after much negotiation on our part,has chosen to terminate our lease on April 30, 2015.

We’ve already secured a space for our next show – Speech & Debate by Stephen Karamwill play at Studio X (home of Theatre Exile) at 13th and Reed Streets – and already havean exciting new venue lined up for our 16th Anniversary Season, but right now we needyour help!

I love working on new plays. There is something really special about being thefirst group of people to bring a play to life. When it’s the playwright’s first professional production that just adds more joy to the experience (and a little bit of pressure)! I had already read two of Doug’s scripts and seen a Fringe show he co-wrote before committing to Moon Cave. I felt like I had encountered a unique voice, and more specifically a voice that was truly in linewith the work we do here at Azuka Theatre. Our mission to give voice to thestories that go unheard, the outcasts and underdogs, is in perfect alignmentwith the stories Doug likes to tell. I’m looking forward to a long and fruitful collaboration with our newest Playwright in Residence.

What first captivated me about Moon Cave was that it looked at a life completely shaped by a single event. We are all shaped by our life experiences,for better or worse. What does an adult life look like when the key experiencethat shapes it happens in childhood and is so traumatic, so defining? How doyou get past that? CAN you get past that? These are questions without easy answers, questions I was interested in exploring and sharing with our audiences.These are the kinds of questions we have been bringing to you for many years.

I hope you enjoy our 15th World Premiere production. It is an honor for us to be able to bring you, our loyal audiences, such incredible new work. Plays youcan’t see anywhere else. It is equally important that we are able to tell thesestories with the enormous talent pool we’re so lucky to have here in Philadelphia. Our voices, telling our stories, for you.

FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT

Moon Cave was written all over this city. It was written in the basement of theAdrienne during the 2014 PlayPenn Conference. It was written in the offices of the Arden during Foundry meetings. At my parents’ house, my day job, in coffee shops, and in bars. Apartments I’ve rented in South Philly, Fishtown, and Manayunk.

It began as a twenty page scene about a troubled 12-year old boy namedRichard, and morphed into an 82 page draft (tentatively and inexplicably) titledDisco 2000 with a cast of seven. A year and six drafts later Moon Cave was beingwritten in rehearsal rooms at the Off-Broad Street Theatre as we prepared forproduction with a cast of two.

After having spent so much time with the characters of Richard and Rachel it willbe hard to let them go. While their voices and intentions have changed duringthe writing of Moon Cave, they have both remained haunted by their past anddedicated to changing their future. It is a future they are struggling to create together.

The development of a new play is a collaborative process and Moon Cave hasbenefited from the focus and insight of some extremely talented people. PaulMeshejian and Michele Volansky of PlayPenn, as well as the cast and creativeteam that helped bring that workshop to life: Trevor Fayle, Anna Zaida Szapiro,Jared Michael Delaney, and Linda Liebman. Thanks to Maura Krause, AllisonHeishman, and the members of The Foundry for their ongoing notes as the play took shape. Martha Stuckey for helping me figure out the ending and forkeeping me sane as opening night inched closer and closer. Taysha and Kevin as well as our incredible crew and design team for pushing the limits of thisstory during the final weeks. And most especially, thanks to Sally Ollove andKevin Glaccum.

Kevin Meehan (Richard)Kevin made his Philadelphia debut with Azuka and is stoked to be joining the team fora third time (Kid Simple, Failure: A Love Story). A proud local artist, he has worked withsuch companies as the Arden, Wilma, Interact, Inis Nua, Lantern, Simpatico, Phila. Artists’Collective, Flashpoint, PlayPenn, Curio, Hedgerow, and is a company member of the experimental theatre group New Paradise Labs. He enjoys working on new plays withawesome people (like this one!) and also collaborating with non-theatre artists tomake experiential installation-y things. Upcoming: an interactive feminist piece of

choreography for Simpatico Theatre’s Second Stage. Thanks to Kevin, Doug, Taysha, the whole Azuka familyfor wanting to play with him, and to his family and friends for their support.

Douglas Williams (Playwright)Doug is the Playwright-in- Residence here at Azuka Theatre and a founding member of Orbiter 3, a playwrights producing collective. Other plays include The Death and Lifeof Uncle Gene and Shitheads, which was a finalist at the Lark’s Playwrights’ Week and asemi-finalist at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center’s National Playwrights Conference.He is the recipient of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts SilverAward, which was presented by playwright Sam Shepard. He is a member of theFoundry, a new play lab for emerging playwrights, and a graduate of Temple

University. Moon Cave, which was developed at the 2014 PlayPenn New Play Conference, marks his first professional production.

Kevin Glaccum (Director)Kevin has been a member of Azuka Theatre since their inaugural production of La Rue des Faux. For Azuka he has directed productions of Tigers Be Still, Dutch Masters,Pookie Goes Grenading, Everyone and I, Hope Street and Other Lonely Place, Act aLady, Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom, Nerve, Whisky Neat, Greek Active, Kid Simple, Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Barrymore Nomination; Best Director of a Musical,Philadelphia Weekly), Azuka One-Acts, Four, The Boys and Sincerity Forever. Other credits include Say Goodnight, Gracie (Act II Playhouse) Iron Kisses (Philadelphia Gay

and Lesbian Theater Festival), The Shoes (Philadelphia Fringe Festival) and The Rocky Horror Show, Club California, Proof and The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon at Arcadia University where he’s also an adjunctprofessor. Kevin currently serves as Board President for Theatre Philadelphia the organization responsible for The Barrymore Awards, Philadelphia’s professional theater awards program; for the past ten years he hasbeen a peer panelist for the Philadelphia Cultural Fund, The City of Philadelphia’s organization that supportsand enhances the cultural life and vitality of the City of Philadelphia and its residents through the awardingof grants; he is a member of Lincoln Center’s Directors Lab. Avista Custom Theatrical, LLC (Properties)Owned by Jennifer Burkhart and Amanda Hatch, Avista was founded in 2007 as a properties design andconstruction firm. Sally Ollove (Dramaturg)Sally is the Resident Dramaturg at Azuka Theatre. She has dramaturged locally for Arden Theatre Company,The Bearded Ladies Cabaret, Gas & Electric Arts, and Theatre Exile and nationally at the American RepertoryTheatre, Signature Theatre Company in New York, and Untitled Theatre Company #61 among others. Lauren Tracy (Stage Manager)Lauren is excited to be returning to Azuka! Robert J. Klimowski (Technical Director)Rob is a South Jersey native and he is a graduate from Rowan University with a BA in Technical Theatre. Hehas worked all over the Tri-State area for the past few years as a Free-lance Scenic Carpenter and has workedwith many theatres as their Technical Director as well. He now runs his own scenic shop out of Blackwood, NJ.He does everything from Theatre sets to Special Events, RJK Scenic Productions, LLC. Rob is very excited to beworking with Azuka Theatre again and would like to thank them for giving him this opportunity. Lena Barnard (Assistant Stage Manager)Lena is a Playwright and freelance Stage Manager. As a Playwright she was a member of the SoLow Fest Incubator Residency with Simpatico Theatre Project and a member of the Foundry. As a Stage Manager shehas worked with Plays & Players, Azuka, Shakespeare in Clark Park and Murmuration Theater. This year she isone of the organizers of SoLow Fest. She is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College.

Johanna Austin (Production Photographer)Johanna of AustinArt has had the pleasure of working with Azuka since she fell in love with them and theirNerve (April 2010 production). For 14 years Johanna has been exploring her perceptions of the world throughphotography. She hones her sense of composition by focusing on the essence of what she sees, and presentsit with a fresh eye. Johanna specializes in creating dynamic, vibrant images in low-light atmospheres of per-formance venues of all kinds. Although she shoots everything, her photography is inspired by a desire to cre-ate a still life out of performance art. She thrives on constructing images that would otherwise be forgotten,and often, not even seen at all.
