Hello and welcome to Montmartre!

My name is Hector and I will be your guide in this very picturesque district.

Nicknamed the « butte » (« mound ») by its inhabitants, Montmartre is located on a hill. You will soon notice that it goes up and down all the time.

But most importantly, Montmartre has many surprises in store for its visitors at each street corner. Be curious and you will discover the different aspects of this Parisian village.

As usual, in your explorations with me, you will have to solve puzzles. Look carefully around you. At the end, you will receive your Circuits Parallèles adventurer’s certificate.

It’s up to you now!

From the 1900s, this building has been a residence for artists. It is one of them who gave it that teasing nickname. The bedrooms are on each side of a narrow corridor that looks like the gangways of a liner (it explains the word bateau “boat”) and there is only one watering place for all the inhabitants (it explains the word lavoir “wash house”). Destroyed by a fire, it was rebuilt in 1978. Nowadays, it houses 25 artists’ workshops.

Numerous painters that are very famous nowadays but very poor at the time lived in the Bateau Lavoir. Among them is a Spanish painter and sculptor who settled there between 1904 and 1909. He is probably one of the most famous and important artists of the 20th century. His most successful paintings are Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (The Young Ladies of Avignon) and Guernica.Who is it? Untie these threads to know.

Walk up the Place Emile Goudeau and turn left into the Rue d’Orchampt.

On your left, the building with green doors and a big glass wall is the other frontage of the Bateau Lavoir. These huge windows let the natural light in which is essential for painters to make colours.
