Monthly Newsletter December 2016 Issue 5 Greetings Greyhound Nation, It is my hope that everyone had an enjoyable “Thanksgiving” break with family and friends. As you know, the month of December brings with it much joy and cheer, as we prepare for the upcoming holiday season. It also marks the end of the first semester. This month is filled with many exciting events and activities, starting with High School “Spirit Week,” which culminates with our Homecoming dance on Saturday, December 3rd. Our Performing Arts Department will also be showcasing their musical talents this month during their annual winter concerts. Please be sure to review the calendar for dates and times. You don’t want to miss any of these performances. Also note that semester exams will start on December 9th and go through December 16th. On November 30th, LPA hosted the Chamber of Commerce Education and Business Breakfast. Approximately 40 members from local agencies and businesses participated in the event. Members toured our high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes and received a firsthand look at how our students prepare for industry certification(s) and become career ready. Three seniors committed to colleges/universities during “National Signing Week” on November 9th. They are: Caleb Pottorff, Track and Cross Country at Florida State University; Joseph Stubbs, Baseball at Indian River State College; and Madison Walsh, Softball at Lander University, South Carolina. Way to go Greyhounds!!! We also have exciting “Staffulty” news! Four staff members have been selected by their peers to represent LPA in the 2016-2017 SLPS Employee Recognition Program. They are as follows: Mr. John Steeve Louidor /French Teacher: Outstanding First Year Teacher; Ms. Annie Simmons /Cafeteria Manager: School Related Employee of the Year; Ms. Stephanie Gaskin/Reading Teacher: Distinguished Minority Educator Award; and Ms. Makeda Brome/Math Teacher: Teacher of the Year. Troupe 6958 garnered 15 “Superior” ratings and will advance to the state festival in March 2017. On behalf of the administrative team and the entire “Staffulty,” we want to wish all of our parents, students, stakeholders and community partners a safe and joyous holiday season. “Happy Holidays,” “Merry Christmas,” “Feliz Navidad,” Happy Hanukah,” “Happy Kwanza,” “Joyeuz Noel” and “Milad Majid” from Lincoln Park Academy! “One School; One Team; One Theme” Sincerely, Henry Sanabria Principal

December brings great excitement with our holiday break right around the corner. With busy days ahead it is important to remain focused on the goal of academic excellence and finish the first semester well. DP juniors and seniors will focus on preparation for semester exams this month. Good luck to our IB Theatre seniors who have Theatre Research Presentations from December 1-12.

MYP teachers and students are preparing for semester exams as well. Our teachers use the MYP Global Contexts to encourage inquiry and concept based learning. Focusing instruction

using global contexts helps students develop an understanding of their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet through developmentally appropriate exploration. Our global context focus for December and January is Identities and Relationships. Students will use the theme to examine the nature of self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities as well as cultures; rights and responsibilities. This is the perfect season to interact with these concepts.

We are currently in the application period for eighth grade students who wish to participate in our LPA IB Diploma Program. Students who attended the SLC Attractor Program Night will be asking teachers for recommendations for their LPA IB application packet. Parents who missed the SLC Attractor Program Night in November can find information on the district website at stlucie.k12.fl.us/parents-students/. Look for Attractor Programs for additional details.

Finally, as we approach the end of 2016, be sure to celebrate the many successes from the fall semester and prepare for a well-deserved break that allows for both good times with friends and family and plenty of rest.

Kind regards,

Carol Kuhn

IB Coordinator

An Important Note Bullying has been identified as a major concern by schools across the U.S.

Therefore, to reduce the bullying, we are encouraging parents to not only

talk with your children about bullying and expectations about behavior,

but also review the district’s policy on bullying. A Power Point

presentation is available for all parents to view on our school’s website at:

http//schools.stlucie.k12.fl.us/lpa/. We encourage all parents to view this

presentation as it may answer many questions parents may have

regarding our response to bullying. However, should you have any

further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the school.

Remember, together we can stop bullying. For additional information,

parents can look through the Student Code of Conduct as well, which is

available on the district website.
