Conserving electricity serves the double purpose of helping stop global warming and saving a lot of money over time. Take a look around your home and office: any appliance that operates on electricity can be made more energy efficient. Insulating your home and changing your daily habits are also effective ways to reduce the amount of electricity you use. Read on for more details on how to save electricity.

Embrace natural light. Open up your curtains and let the sun shine in! Using natural light whenever possible instead of relying on artificial light can greatly reduce the amount of electricity you use during the day.The same is true whether you work in an office or spend your days in your house. Exposure to natural light also increases

happiness, giving you an even greater incentive to raise the blinds.

Try to arrange your workspace so that natural light floods your desk. Keep the overhead lights off when possible. When you need extra lighting, use a low-powered desk lamp instead.

Buy curtains or blinds in a light shade that provides privacy but still allows light to come through.

Change your bulbs. Replacing regular incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent (CFL) or LED bulbs is a big energy saver. Incandescent bulbs release 98% of their consumed energy through heat, while CFL and LED bulbs are much more energy efficient and last several times longer.

CFL bulbs were the first alternative to incandescent bulbs, and they use only about 1/4 the energy of incandescent bulbs. They contain trace amounts of mercury, so they must be disposed of properly when they burn out.

LED bulbs are newer to the market. They're more expensive than CFLs, but they last longer and don't contain mercury.

Turn off the lights. This is the simplest, most common way to save electricity, and it really works. Start paying attention to how many lights are on in your house at a given time. Be mindful of how many lights you really need to be using at once. When you leave a room, make a habit of turning off the lights, every single time.

Use light bulbs which don't need to "warm up" for areas that have lights which are used for short periods of time. This information should be written on the bulb's packaging.

If you really want to go all out, have your family use just one or two rooms at night, rather than spreading out all over the house and keeping your entire home lit.

For maximum electricity savings, use candles! This old-fashioned system of providing light at night is effective, romantic and peaceful. If you don't find it practical to use candles every night, try doing it just once or twice a week. Be careful doing this with little kids, though - make sure all of your family members know how to handle candles safely.

Unplug appliances when they aren't in use. Did you know that appliances that are plugged in keep using energy, even when they're switched off? Even an appliance as small as a coffee pot continues slowly sapping energy every moment it stays plugged in, long after the last cup of coffee has been consumed.

A power strip with a switch makes this easier. Instead of pulling 5 devices out of their sockets, all you have to do is flip a switch.

Power down your computer and unplug it at the end of the day. Computers use a lot of energy, and when they ]stay plugged in you're wasting both energy and money.

Don't leave your TV plugged in all the time. It may seem inconvenient to unplug it when you're finished watching, but the savings are worth the trouble.

Unplug your sound system and speakers. These are some of the worst culprits when it comes to sapping extra energy when they aren't in use.

Don't forget small appliances such as phone chargers, kitchen appliances, hair dryers, and anything else you've got that runs on electricity.

During the historic LBT agitation a couple of years ago, EMA had played a very crucial role. Under the umbrella of FAM, EMA had led the fight against LBT and ensured that Mumbai was not covered by Draconian LBT Law. Shri Kamleshbhai N. Mody was representating EMA at all FAM meetings at various places. This year at the recently held elections for the executive committee of FAM, Shri Kamleshbhai N. Mody won the election with maximum number of votes. It is matter of great pride for EMA that we now have a prominent seat in such a prestigious committee.

We on behalf of managing committee and EMA members congratulate Shri Kamleshbhai N. Mody for this achievement.

Federation of Associations of Maharashtra (FAM) is a Mumbai based summit organisation of 750 transport, small-scale and trade associations in Maharashtra an Indian State. It lead traders march against "harsh provisions" of the Maharashtra Government like Octroi and LBT in the year 2014. During the agitation, under the guidance of FAM , all the traders of 750 associations kept their shops closed for nearly one month. In past FAM has also opposed measures by the Indian government to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in the retail sector. In a protest in which it participated 3.5 million member establishments closed for a one day bandh.

This is the second part of the series on heart diseases and treatment. This time we look at the risk factors involve. Subject : Understanding Risk factors......

After studies of various population groups and some extensive clinical studies of people belonging to different ethnic backgrounds and diverse nationalities, one can safely come to following conclusions:

A) Heart disease can be predicted.

B) We have understanding of traditional risk profiles.

C) The risk of heart attacks amongst Indian population is two to three fold higher than other races

D) The risk of heart attack for an Indian with blood cholesterol level of 160 mg% is more than an American or an European with a cholesterol level of 260 mg%. So what are these risk factors?

a) Generally : we divide the factors that are irreversible and those that we can modify. Irreversible or non modifiable factors do not change and one cannot do much about it. These are a) advancing age : generally, in most countries, heart disease occurs at 65 years of age. However, 25 % of Indian heart patients belong to an age group of less than 40 years. b) Gender : before the age of 50 years, men are more vulnerable to heart ailments but after menopause, the hormonal protection gets withdrawn and heart disease zooms up in women after 55 years of age and by 75 years of age, the risk in both men and women becomes equal.Women who have menopause at an early age can have accelerated cholesterol deposition.

c) Family History: we cannot choose our parents! Children of parents who have suffered heart disease at age before 55 years have a three-fold chances of suffering heart attacks at an early age. Similarly, if a sibling has pre-mature heart disease, the risk of other sibling getting heart disease increases many fold. So if one brother has a heart attack early on, we can do screening in all other siblings and take measures to defer the onset or mitigate the severity of disease.

d) Ethnicity: people belonging to Indian sub continent have a very high chance of suffering more mature and severe heart related diseases.

e) Previous heart disease: as one has already suffered a heart attack or angina, he is a proven case and is at highest risk category for another event in his life. The second or third events can be fatal.Friends, as you can see, these risk factors are important to understand one individual's risk profile, one cannot do much to alter them. Age, Sex, ethnicity, family history or some previous history are factors that cannot be changed though their presence helps doctors to measure how vulnerable an individual can be.

Subject: Understanding risk factors...Friends,

As we have seen that blood clogging is due to a process called atherosclerosis or fat deposition. This deposition occurs in patches and many layers of fat may pile progressively over the years or many times, the fat trapped in such a patch may burst like a volcano and cause an acute attack. This deposition of fat may occur in any artery of any organ and any measure to prevent such a deposition leads to prevention of not only heart disease but also brain strokes, leg gangrene and even eye and kidney problems.

It has been noted that this form of heart disease due to arterial blockage hits people of Indian subcontinent at an early age is also more severe. In fact, both sexes are equally vulnerable. However, we can predict the probability of heart attacks in an individual on the basis of his risk factor profile and interpretation of certain tests that we perform.

Any given individual can have either reversible risk factors or irreversible risk factors.Irreversible factors help a doctor assess the quantum of risk in an individual though, one cannot reverse risks such as genetic profile, age, gender, genetic pre disposition or family history. Now we shall concentrate upon reversible risk factors so that we can modify life style of an individual, adopt safety measures and start medications, if required.

Subject : Reversible Risk Factors

Irreversible risk factors help a doctor assess the risk profile and predict the occurrence of heart disease in an individual. As an individual, we must focus on reversible or modifiable risk factors so that every person can prevent or minimize the impact of heart attacks. These reversible risk factors are :

a) Over weight and obesity, improper or bad dietary habitsb) Lack of exercise, sedentary life style and physical inactivityc) Smokingd) Hostility, stress, depression and rage reactionse) High blood pressuref) High cholesterol levels and low HDL cholesterol( good cholesterol)g) Diabetes and pre diabetesh) Elevated homocysteine levelsI) Elevated Lp(a)j) C reactive protein ( CRP )k) Many of the patients suffer from what is called 'metabolic syndrome' which is nothing but a combination of obesity, high triglycerides, low HDL, high blood pressure and pre diabetes or diabetes. In the subsequent articles, I shall briefly explain something about each of the above subtopics and then decide which tests one should undergo to assess his risk status.

A holiday honoring the birth of Jesus Christ, Christmas evolved over two millennia into a worldwide religious and secular celebration, incorporating many traditions into the festivities along the way. Today, Christmas is a time for family and friends to get together and exchange gifts.

Christmas is both a sacred religious holiday and a worldwide cultural and commercial phenomenon. For two millennia, people around the world have been observing it with traditions and practices that are both religious and secular in nature. Christians celebrate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, a spiritual leader whose teachings form the basis of their religion. Popular customs include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, attending church, sharing meals with family and friends and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus to arrive.

Compared to other religious festivals, Christmas is quite a small festival in India, due to the number of people who are Christians (about 2.3%) compared to people who belong to other religions. Having said this, the population of India is over 1 Billion, so there are over 25 million Christians in India!

One of the largest Indian Christian Communities in a city is in Mumbai. A lot of the Christians in Mumbai (previously known as Bombay) are Roman Catholics. In India's smallest state, Goa which is on the west of India, about 26% of people are Christians. Many of the Christians in Mumbai came from or have roots in Goa. The states of Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram (all on the very east of India) have high populations of Christians as well.

Midnight mass is a very important service for Christians in India, especially Catholics. The whole family will walk to the mass and this will be followed by a massive feast of different delicacies, (mostly curries) and the giving and receiving of presents. Churches in India are decorated with Poinsettia flowers and candles for the Christmas Eve Midnight Mass service.
