Large pickup sales dipped slightly from July to August, making way for CUVs to reach 26.3% of the total industry. Small cars, midsize cars and CUVs continued to account for two-thirds (or roughly 66%) of the automotive market.

The luxury car continued to edge up last month, growing to a 16.6% share of the passenger car market. At the same time, the small car segment shrank a percentage point to 40.2%, while large cars grew to 3.3% in August.

CUV sales dominated the light truck market last month, taking a 54% share. This is nearly 4 percentage points higher than in July. As a result, other segments have remained steady, with the exception of SUVs, which slowed to 12.8% in August.

Light truck sales were slower compared to July; however, thanks to CUVs, this segment is holding steady at 50% of the total industry for the 2013 year.

While still behind hybrids, clean diesels have steadied at 1.07% of the total industry. Plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles have shown a notable increase over 2012 as well.

For August, hybrid sales were 30% higher in 2013 as compared to 2012. Perhaps the most impressive change year-over-year was that of electric vehicles. Jumping from 837 units in August 2012 to nearly 5,000 last month, EV sales grew six-fold.
