President’s Message
September 2013
The leaves are beginning to change and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. As we gather around the table and give thanks for family and friends who enrich our lives in so many ways, we should also take a moment give thanks to how fortunate we are to be living in such a wonderful country as Canada. Our September meeting was a great start to the 2013 – 2014 year. We had a record number with 91 members and guest in attendance. Our guest speaker, Stuart Knight, reminded all of us the importance of nurturing relationships. Rather than picking up the telephone or cell to call that broker, underwriter or client, how many of us send an email or text message instead of engaging someone in a conversation because we think it will faster? How much do you know about the people you transact business with or work with on a daily or weekly basis? Stuart reminded us of how important and potentially beneficial it can be if you take the time to develop these relationships. Two reminders for everyone: First we are hosting convention June 2016 so the countdown has started. We still require volunteers to chair or work on committees. If you are interested, please contact Joanne Greco or Karen Akeson. Secondly, a reminder that if you have not already done so, to submit your membership renewal. Our next meeting is on Tuesday, October 15th at the Hyatt Regency. Our guest speaker will Glen Gibson, President and COO at the Hamilton Tiger Cats and CEO Crawford Consulting Services (Canada). I am looking forward to Glen’s insight on The Impact of Social Media on Today’s World. Make sure you register early. See you on October 15

TIWA Committees
Bulletin: Prepares and distributes monthly bulletin (TIWA Topics) to keep
Members informed. Gathers material and co-ordinates printing, and distribution.
Cowan Group
Award:
Collects and prepares a submission to the Canadian Association of Insurance Women (CAIW) outlining the yearly activities of the Association and it’s Membership.
Education: Submits educational items for publication in the Bulletin. Prepares 10-
minute educational workshops for dinner meetings.
Golf Tournament:
Co-ordinates arrangements for the annual Golf Tournament.
Industry Events:
Co-ordinates TIWA’s participation in the various industry events such as IBTR.
Insurance Information
Week:
Co-ordinates TIWA’s involvement in the annual CAIW Insurance Information Campaign in conjunction with industry-wide associations.
Travelers Education
Award:
Collect and prepares a submission to the Canadian Association of Insurance Women (CAIW) outlining the year’s education achievements of the Association’s Members.
Meeting Coordinator:
Co-ordinates space requirements and menus with the meeting venue. Manages the reception desk at all meetings.
Membership: Receives new and renewal membership application, prepares
membership list and orders and distributes nametags. Assists on reception desk at dinner meetings.
Publicity: Liaises with media and industry to publicize and promote activities of the
Association.
Wine & Cheese:
Co-ordinates arrangements for the annual Wine & Cheese Reception.
Web Master Co-ordinates TIWA’s online presence.
Fun Committee:

sent our earlier this year, whereby Members voted on what topics they would like to

8. Speaker: Stuart Knight spoke on the Art of Powerful Conversation. Stuart is the
President of Stuart Knight Productions, and was introduced by Sephora Sciara.
Stuart was very enthusiastic, energetic, and confident while executing his
presentation. He interacted with the audience very well, and was animated in his
delivery. Stuart encouraged us to look at the ways we interact with others, and to
make it a memorable experience for both parties involved. Stuart identified the Five
factors that let you know you are having a powerful conversation, and went into the
4 powerful conversations a Leader should have. Overall, this presentation was
received highly from those in attendance. Following the presentation, Stuart was
signing and selling copies of his book, which sold out!
