Transcript of MONTHLY BULLETIN OF CITY MONTESSORI SCHOOL, …DR JAGDISH GANDHI’S TALK ON ‘NEW MODEL OF QUALITY...
April brings with it
the promise and
hope of new
beginnings, and we
start the new
academic year firmly
resolved to take
CMS education to
greater heights in 2017-18!
I am delighted to report that CMS
students’ study-abroad successes
continued to grow throughout March,
with the number who have received
offers of admission at foreign
universities in the US, UK, Germany,
Australia, etc. having risen to 51 pupils.
Among the several highly desirable
offers received in March, the best is
perhaps a full scholarship admission
offer by Yale University (an Ivy League
US university) to Saksham Mehrotra of
CMS Gomti Nagar 1 campus to study
Computer Science. The estimated value
of this offer over the 4-year degree is
just under Rs. 2 crore! Shubh Agarwal of
the same Campus I became India’s
topper in the SAT Exam, getting the
second highest possible mark globally,
which attracted much media attention
nationally. This score portents excellent
university offer to Shubh in the autumn
2017.
Environmentally, our students have
made us proud, with a CMS Mahanagar
student team winning the Bronze
Beaver Award for their sensitive film
‘Gauraiya, the Great Indian Sparrow’ at
the National Science Film Festival in
Kolkata.
CMS Asharfabad campus – a beacon of
development in this very special area –
moved into its brand new building,
which parents are delighted with!
Looking ahead, the Career Fest on 23
April will offer senior students the
excellent opportunity to find out about
the varied professions by meeting, and
asking questions of, leading experts in
various fields/occupations who will be
present there.
From 5th April, our mega Children’s
International Film Festival (ICFF) at CMS
Kanpur Road, will show 1496 best
educational children's films from 102
countries free of charge to students of
CMS as well as other schools!

“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.” —Dalai Lama XIV
ENLIGHTENMENT APRIL 2017 (2)
Message from Mr Roshan GandhiDirector of Strategy, CMS
CMS celebrated Commonwealth Dayon 6th March with great enthusiasm,on the theme ‘A Peace-BuildingCommonwealth’. CMS joined theintergovernmental organisation’s 52countries in praising their commoncommitment to ideals includingworld peace, representativedemocracy, equality, and humanrights.
At CMS, we share a commitment tothese noble aims. Dear students: you are regularlyexposed to such concepts through World Parliaments,World Peace Prayers, and All-Religion Prayers in frequentevents celebrating unity. But after the long practices andrepeated performances which are necessary for spreadingthese important messages in the high-quality, impressive, and effective manner that you always do, it is possiblethat you might stop actively thinking about the meaningbehind the words you are saying.
Now, however, it is more vital than ever that yourecognise not only the theoretical desirability of thesevalues, but also their practical relevance. As evidenced byrecent elections in the US, Europe, and elsewhere, aglobal political atmosphere is growing which emphasisesdivisions, reinforces polarisation, and inflames people’sirrational fears about trivial differences of nationality, colour, or religion. As the next leaders of society, it is yourresponsibility to reverse this trend.
Reflect, therefore, on the principles of unity you havebeen taught at CMS, and consider how you might applythem in your daily lives. No effort is too small: a valuablecontribution may take the form of checking a familymember who makes a narrow-minded statement, or juststarting a meaningful conversation amongst your friendsto raise awareness. Take a stand against prejudice, andbecome an agent of change to create a better future foryourselves and all children.

STUDY ABROAD APRIL 2017 (4)
A. I think CMS has had a big impact on
where I am today and the values I hold.
It has helped me create a broad
perspective about everything. It has
given exposure in form of extra-
curricular activities, international
events, CISV camps and encouraging
students to study abroad. It has helped
me identify and strengthen some of my
skills which I never knew existed in me.
Q. How did you manage your finances?
Any pointers to the aspiring students?
A. I have an annual 3000 Euros scholarship
from UCD which helped me a lot in
managing my expenses. To cover up the
rest of my expenses, I took up a bank
loan.
Q. Lastly, do you have a word of advice to
any prospective CMS students who are
planning to study overseas?
A. If any student is planning to study
overseas and is very passionate about
it, I would just advise them to go for it. It
is not only about the education you get
here but also about the overall
experience. It will be difficult initially,
but you will get to learn a lot from
people with different cultures and
backgrounds.
and warm hearted. My roommates in
my apartment and my classmates have
always helped me with everything.
Education here in Ireland is very
different and I never had a problem in
adjusting. It is like home away from
home.
Q. Will you come back to India after your
undergrad or do you plan to continue
abroad? If yes, what have you planned?
A. I plan to work for a few years after I
complete my undergrad abroad. I also
plan to do my Masters after working for
a few years. But in the end, I would
always want to come back to India.
Q. Could you tell us briefly about your
home background – such as your
parents' occupations, socio-economic
status, etc.?
A. I live in a family of four along with my
father, mother, and an elder sister. My
father is a Practicing Chartered
Accountant and my mother is the
Principal of one of the CMS branches.
My sister is currently in her last year of
B.Arch.
Q. How has CMS education impacted your
choices and decisions in life so far?
What about your choice to study
abroad?
Interviews of CMS students studying abroad
welcome to explore any other field they
are interested in and can choose it as
their elective module. We are taught
how to deal with real-life situations
that may come across during our
career. The curriculum gives us a vast
exposure in the form of Internship
programs and exchange opportunities
to different universities outside Ireland.
Q. Are you comfortable away from home
at such a young age? What do you miss
in your new ‘home away from home’?
(Are you missing Mum’s food?)
A. It’s been 5 months away from home but
I have created a home for myself here.
People in Ireland are very friendly and
open so I never felt I was away from
India. Initially, leaving my friends and
family and starting a new life was
difficult but I have learnt to adjust. Even
in just 5 months, there have been so
many things to learn. I have learnt how
to cook Indian dishes for myself and my
friends here. I try and manage
everything on my own. I have started
enjoying living here even though I miss
my home sometimes.
Q. Did you find it easy to make friends
there?
A. Yes, it is. Irish people are very friendly
Avantika Pandey, alumna of CMS Mahanagar Campus studying in University College of Dublin, Ireland on €7000/annum scholarship
Q. Why did you want to
study abroad and
how do you think it
is different from
studying in India?
A. My dream of pursuing
further education
abroad grew when I
went for a CISV Camp to Germany in
Class V. I always wanted to experience
new things and try something different.
Meeting new people, living life
independently, managing my own
schedule and time was something I
always felt strongly about. Studying
abroad gave me a whole new
perspective of life. I have become more
self-confident. The whole concept of
education is different than what I had in
India. Studying Commerce has never
been more fun for me. Here, studies are
more practical than book-oriented. A
lot of team assignments are given
which help you meet new people all the
time. The curriculum is very interesting
and the professors become more like
your friend and mentors than just
teachers. They are willing to help you
with any difficulty you come across.
Here in UCD, students are not limited to
one field that they apply for. They are
Q. How did you manage your finances?
Any pointers to the aspiring
students?
A. Try building up your CV with not just
academics but extra-curricular as
well. This will be helpful in getting
good scholarships. Studying abroad
without scholarship can be a costly
affair so I recommend that try to get a
scholarship to cover your expenses.
Q. Lastly, do you have a word of advice
to any prospective CMS students who
are planning to study overseas?
A. Apply early and make a timeline to
get your essays done. Doing it last
moment is very hectic. Also do events
t h at w i l l e n h a n c e yo u r C V.
Universities look for students who
have performed well or at least done
things apart from academics.
International Law. But once studies
are done I would like to come back to
India to solve problems existing in
India.
Q. Could you tell us briefly about your
home background – such as your
parents ' occupat ions , soc io-
economic status, etc.?
A. I am from a middle-class family. Both
my parents are working.
Q. How has CMS education impacted
your choices and decisions in life so
far? What about your choice to study
abroad?
A. CMS made me aware of study abroad
application procedures. I also started
taking up many activities after joining
CMS which developed my interest in
off-beat fields as well.
because you have to do everything by
yourself; from cooking to cleaning. It
also teaches time management and
budgeting.
I miss food because it is not easy to
get it here and it is also very
expensive.
Q. Did you find it easy to make friends
there?
A. Since everyone is away from home, it
is easy to make friends. Also in an
international community people
interact to understand each other’s
cultures.
Q. Will you come back to India after your
undergrad or do you plan to continue
abroad? If yes, what have you
planned?
A. I plan on doing a specialization in
Sagarika Mishra, alumna of CMS Gomti Nagar Campus I studying in Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Japan on 80% scholarship
Q. Why did you want
to study abroad
and how do you
think it is different
from studying in
India?
A. Studying abroad
opens up more
avenues and gives us a global
exposure that is imperative to live in a
global society. The teaching pattern is
very different, unlike India the studies
are application based.
Q. Are you comfortable away from
home at such a young age? What do
you miss in your new ‘home away
from home’? (Are you missing Mum’s
food?)
A. It is not easy but studying abroad
makes one more independent

COMMONWEALTH DAY APRIL 2017 (5)
Prize-Winning Entries of Creative Writing Contest 'Power of Pen 2016-17' organized by CMS Editorial Department (Classes I & II)1st - My Family
I feel fortunate to be born in a family where values are inculcated from early childhood. I
belong to a middle class family. There are six members in my family - my
parents and elder sister and brothers. My parents are the head of the
family. Everybody respects them. They help us in our studies. My mother
tells me good stories. My father is a service man. He is sincere and hard
working. He always goes to office on time. My mother is a simple
housewife. She is soft-hearted and caring. She takes great care of us. She
looks after my brothers and sister. She does not care for her own comfort
as much as for us. She is religious and God fearing. Our family gives great
importance to values and morals in life. We are taught to respect our elders. There is peace,
prosperity and love in our family.
Suhani Rathore, II, Rajendra Nagar Campus III
2nd - My Hero in Life
We meet many people in our life. Among them, some are remembered for quite a long time
due to some qualities. For me, my mother is my hero. She is really a genius.
She cares for everyone is the family without caring for herself. She works
very hard all through the day.
She gets up at 5 in the morning, cleans the house, takes her bath and prays
to the Almighty. She makes breakfast and tiffin as well. She gives me a
glass of milk twice every day. My mother tells me to eat an apple daily to
be healthy.
She cooks very tasty food and other items for the whole family. She is a
national trainer of food preservation. My mother always speaks the truth. I love her very
much and I am really proud of her. She says, "Son, Honesty is the best policy!"

2nd - My Summer Vacations
My summer vacations started from 14th May onwards. I was very excited as my family and I
planned to go to Nainital. After completing my holiday homework, we
went to Nainital. We reached Nainital on 22nd of May. It was like a dream
come true. I was amazed to see the beauty of mountains and valleys. We
stayed there for three days and visited many places like Naina Devi
temple, Naini Jheel, Bhimtal, Saattal, Kainchi Ashram, Ghora Khaal Temple
etc. I enjoyed a lot while boating in Naini Jheel.
Evenings in Nainital were quite cool and pleasant. In the evening, we went
to Mall Road. Mall Road was crowded with tourists. I bought beautiful
candles, key rings, shawl, tiara and famous 'Bal Mithai' from Nainital. I ate corn, momos,
Maggi and ice-cream there. I also enjoyed many adventurous sports like paragliding, river
crossing, bungie jumping, mountain climbing. I had a wonderful experience during our trip
to Nainital.

3rd - My Real Life Hero - My Mother
I would like to tell you about a hero in my life. She is the most important
creation of God, whose love is purest, strongest and most natural. She is
my mom - My mother. Do you know why God made moms? He made and
gave us moms as they take care of each one of us unconditionally. My
mother gave me life. She taught me to talk and walk. She is very brave and
courageous. She never runs away from problems and deals with them
patiently. She does everything for me from morning to evening. She is
most caring and takes care of me. She is always very helping. She helps me
and guides me for everything. I always feel happy and very comfortable with her. My mom is
really an ideal for me. I love you mom very much.
Ekansh Srivastava, Class I A, Aliganj Campus I
3rd - My School Picnic
I am so excited to tell you about my school picnic which I enjoyed with all my friends and
teachers on Children's Day. We all gathered in our school and then reached
the Zoo by bus. We really enjoyed the ride, we reached our destination all
singing and enjoying. Finally, we entered the zoo and were welcomed by
the twittering and chirping of birds. We walked up and down watching the
tigers, lions, bears, giraffe shut in cages. We heard the loud roar of the lion
and were very excited to see its cute cubs. We also saw snakes and
different kinds of fishes. The crocodile looked idle. By the time, we all were
hungry, so our teacher made us sit under a shady tree where we enjoyed our lunch. We
shared our lunch, and so had many different varieties to taste. After that, we played in the
garden and enjoyed different swings. Then, the saddest moment came. None of us wanted
to go back though we all were so tired. This was the picnic I will cherish throughout my life
and want many more in the years to come.

emphasizing on the importance of team
spirit, ownership, and accountability.
Mr Vinod Dwivedi, Environmental Health
and Safety (EHS) Consultant, shared the
Occupational Health and Safety
Awareness Measures with the
participants. The training was given in
four main areas: construction safety,
electrical safety, use of Personal

safety. Special attention was drawn to the
importance of using PPE for workers on
construction sites. Personal protective
equipment is designed to protect many
parts of the body, such as the eyes, head,
face, hands, feet, and ears. JEs were
informed that they must wear safety
equipment and practise safety measures
at all times.
The session ended by all participants
